Two quick questions.

1. Is a E5200 (dual core, 2.5Ghz) really so crap in 2017 that it can't handle 720p or above in YouTube? I remember playing COD world at war etc and it handled it maxed out with a decent GPU a couple years back. With mobile phones and Pi's etc playing YouTube I thought it would be possible. I'm getting sound issues and occasional freezing mid video not due to my ADSL line.

2. This is more relevant to the thread, if the above CPU needs to be retired I am thinking of moving my i5 4670k to the lounge to take over the HTPC role. I can get a Intel i7 6700 and MSI B150m Gaming m3 board new for R3900. Good deal? I'm aware of Kaby-Lake but that will cost about double.

That board you are selecting is R2.3k though, so good deal.

Need some advice on a gaming PC build that I've been (t)asked to build for a teen that will primarily be playing FPS (Battefield, CoD, CS:GO, Overwatch), RTS, RPG (Skyrim, Fallout, Shadow of Mordor, Diablo 3) type of games. Gaming will be at 1080p for at least another year, seeing as they won't have budget for a new monitor any time soon. They have all other peripherals (Kb, mouse, headset).

We sourced a 1060 6GB GPU a few weeks back and need all other components for a rig.

Components need to be new and from a retailer / e-tailer, so not Carb (been trying to convince them on this).

Absolute max budget is R10 000.

PC also needs to last several years, with a few upgrades (i.e. memory, GPU and eventually CPU) here and there, which will probably end up being hand me downs from friends of the family (aka me).

So with those parameters, I was thinking of:
CPU: Ryzen R5 1500X
Memory: G.Skill F4-2666C15D-8GVR or G.Skill F4-2400C15D-16GVS**
SSD: Mushkin 240GB or Samsung 850 EVO** (the kid has a WD Blue 1TB which we'll use as secondary storage)

That's roughly R5500 - R6500 of budget

Where I'm stuck is form factor on the builds and consequently Motherboard, PSU and Chassis. Go for ATX or mATX, and which components? Also aware that the RAM needs to be compatible with the MB.

Chassis won't be showcased, so doesn't have to be R1000+, but will need to look into cooling option / circulation come summer.

I have had a harder time coming up with ideas on this than I've had building my own rigs.

mATX and ATX depends on the form factor you want. Pick one and people can suggest parts.
If it's standing under the desk, just use an ATX case, use mATX if you want it to take less space (but your mobo will probably be smaller as well, they often only have 2 DRAM slots rather than 4 and less PCI-e Lanes).

You also didn't state your budget.

Going up in price: http://www.wootware.co.za/phanteks-...ck-steel-e-atx-mid-tower-desktop-chassis.html has 2x USB 3.0 versus the above 1x 3.0, 1x 2.0. Also clear side panel and a good dust filter.
Both of the above have case fans included.

I'm picking wootware as I'm in Cape Town and I've always had great support with them.

Somehow managed to get three full size GPU's in a smaller midtower case. Including one liquid cooled GPU with a rad.

Took a lot of double sided tape lol.
 
which CPU and SSD are most interesting now in 2017, wanna update some hardware but totally lost in new models and new solutions.

Depends on your budget & application.

Best bang for buck is an i7 from PotterH over on carbonite/mineaway.
 
its a 1060 so going to stick with 1080p also going to be programming on it so the extra space would be nice...

Yeah, 1080p with a 1060 is lush (6GB - don't bother with the 3GB, it doesn't even use the same board).

I was asked to help to build, or rather put together a top of the range PC that will be used for options trading 99% of the time.
Even though it is not required, the guy wants to have some the most expensive components for his peace of mind.
The most important factor is stability.
And lots of ram for his multiple live data feeds, etc

Weird...I get peace of mind from not spending more than required for what I want to do :p

Have you looked at Eyefinity graphics cards? Should be able to pick up one for the same sort of pricing as a 1050 to drive all 6 monitors. Simpler than dual graphics cards.

On the thing about stability...stability does not get better with how much is spent.

I have no idea why stock trading would require 128GB of memory or a 10 core processor but if it does need that much than why stop at 10 cores when you can get a Threadripper 16 core CPU at a similar price and absolutely stomps that Intel CPU in multi-threaded workloads.
 
Not be too rude, but yell him to stop wasting money cos he has it. None of that will guarantee you stability. He should be spending his money on Fibre with the lowest latency and the most fail overs and backup etc.

At most he needs a fancy workstation card that can handle multiple monitors. And if he wants to pixel count the stock graphs then get high resolution monitors.

Fiber is there, 4 u-wide 27 screens are there, yelling is useless, he got the components idea from some company in USA that specialises in building trading computers. I know that 64GB ram would be justified, but as for the rest... Some people are very stubborn.
