Oh joy, my PC won't power up. To be fair it's had problems for a couple years, since I got a Radeon 7970 - when gaming or on hot days it would freeze. Since it happened as soon as I put the new card in I assumed my XFX Pro 650W was struggling to keep up.

But I was travelling and I got an Xbox and a laptop so the PC was mainly used for occasional video editing or for work where I wanted to quickly hop onto a rig to have a big screen and mouse ready to go.

So anyway, I guess the PSU is now borked and I'm looking around for affordable replacements.

I don't really want to spend more than a grand - any ideas?

Another option, if the 7970 is so demanding is to sell that and replace it with a less power hungry option (since I don't game on it anymore it shouldn't be a problem) and then a cheaper PSU.

What do you think?
 
Hey everyone. Im looking to get a second monitor for my pc. I currently have a dell SE2416H. I want a second screen for my studies. Should i just get the same second screen or is there something better out there? My budget is R2500 (a 1440p would be great, but probably out of budget) tia
 
My old PC just packed up. Need something new.
The PC will run Arch Linux and be used to run Plex Server and store my media files, a bit of development (Python) and host an occasional Windows VM.

Am looking for :
1. Motherboard
2. CPU
3. RAM (min 8 GB)
4. SSD (120GB will be fine)

What can I get and where for R5000 ?

Extend your budget a bit and get an ssd from carbonite. Or you can look for more used components on carbonite. R5k does not get you much these days.

The only think I would change in this build is the PSU I will never touch another Raidmax product.

Ok thanks for your help. I figured you are right I can scrape an extra 4K to push to 9K. How is this combo all from wootware:

Looks fine. You don't need the GT 710, use the onboard gfx.
 
What's todays equivalent of an i5-2500k? I suspect my motherboard is on the way out, and I'd rather upgrade instead of trying to find a replacement for tech that is almost ten years old. I don't mind Intel/AMD but the AMD does need to work out about R500 cheaper since I'd need to then buy a new backplate for my cooler (its water cooled with a Heatkiller IV)

Primary use is gaming, most of which are aRPGs

Ryzen 5 1st gen. Seems to be bang for buck at the moment.

There are 4 and 6 core options

Budget as low as possible while getting the equivalent of what an i5-2500k was when it launched, my brief search suggests ±R7500 will be sufficient (CPU, RAM, mobo)

So it seems like i5-8400 or i5-8600k
I think the former will be better since I can get a B360 mobo cheaper than the equivalent Z370 nevermind that the CPU is much cheaper too. And I'm really very happy with my current CPU when doing the rare productivity thing (like Solidworks) so I don't care that the 8600k or Ryzen competitor might be faster there. I primarily want gaming longevity.

i5 8600k + z370 + 16gb 3200mhz ram will set you back ~R8600

If you go with a single 8gb 2666mhz stick its about R7700

if you go with the i5 8400 + h310 + 16gb 2400mhz ram its R6600

Even the last option will be faster than your i5 2500k.

the 8400 beats the r5 2600 in most games but the margins are small for most games but a few do have a bigger gap but that also comes down to what gpu you got it paired with. R5 2600 build will also cost a bit more than the 8400 one but not much.

I noticed SSDs are getting cheaper... Thinking of pulling the trigger on a 240/250GB

is the difference between a WD Green vs Blue significant in my life?
