I'm looking to buy a pc for general use and a little development and playing older games (Oblivion, Dragon Age 2 & 3, The Witcher 2 & 3, Half Life 2 etc.). I am on a tight budget (+-R6000). I've done some reading up and have more questions than answers atm. I'm hoping some of you guys can assist with some advice.
I'm thinking Ryzen 3 2200G or Ryzen 5 2400G currently because the graphics is acceptable on the chip itself and I don't have to fork more for GPU (for now at least). Should I even consider Intel chips?
The second question is wrt overclocking or stock. The R5 is about R1000 more than the R3, but if keeping stock I can use A320 M/B. If wanting to over clock I would need at least a B450 M/B which comes at least R1000 more expensive. Should I:
1. get R3 and keep stock
2. get R3 and overclock
3. get R5 and keep stock
4. get R5 and overclock
and why?
Also I am in George so there are no online stores close to here, should I consider Rebeltech and Wootware or should I rather buy in store?
I would appreciate any and all opinions.

Ok I can't really make your R6k budget with what I would suggest unfortunately. You can get a B450 MB for not much more than a A320, R400 difference. With an APU faster RAM helps a lot, actually it helps with Ryzen in general.

No. When I do these costings I look at rebeltech & wootware and then stick to the one that looks the cheapest. You might find some components like the HDD for example cheaper at Rebeltech but then you have to factor in paying shipping twice. If you look back in this thread you'll see many costing I did just from rebeltech, They're both awesome guys to shop from and I just go with whomever is cheaper on the day.

You can also scour sites like takealot, raru etc (where you get free shipping for purchases above a certain value) for the same components. I don't really like splitting a purchase over many vendors. I don't have the time to cross reference all the sites but if you did you'll probably be able to shave some rands off the totals above.

I do apologise for my assumptions. I was kind of hoping to get an inside contact for questions I have etc. I think I will just buy from one supplier and have them assemble as well. It might be easier for possible future warranty issues. Thanks again for the effort.
If I can sneak in one more question - do you think the Asrock at that price or stretching to 1499 for the MSI B450M Pro-M2?
 
Hi guys, the time has come since 2012 to upgrade my rig.

I mostly play Dota2, pubg, csgo, artifact, some wow, some single player titles here and there. Csgo i can avg between 200-300 fps on optimized competitive video settings. Dota 2 i get between 60-120 fps on higher settings with the occasional frame drop down to about 35-40 in high action teamfights. In pubg i get between 50-90 fps on the lowest settings but get bad stutter and frame drops as low as 10fps in certain situations, my cpu usage also gets close to 100 if not 100 when playing pubg. My temperatures in pubg range between 75-85 with all fans on etc etc.

It seems like my cpu is bottlencking my rig which is causing me stuttering and frame drops in game, which is absolutely horrible in online gaming. I have in since 2012 changed the thermal paste on my cpu once. Is there anything i can do in the meantime to improve performance?

Here are my current pc specs:

i5 2500 LGA 1155 3.3gz / 3.7ghz boost (bought in 2012)
Biostar H61 mobo (i had to replace my dead h67 and could only find this Biostar cheapy in SA that fits my socket)
8gb (4gb x 2) G.skill value series DDR3 1333 RAM (bought in 2012
1060 3GB
XFX P1-550S 550W PSU (bought in 2012, i use surge protector plugs)
500gb cheapy HDD (bought in 2012)
256gb crucial SSD
Coolermaster CM Storm Scout 1 case (side panel is bent and struggles to close all the way, some fans are disconnected, i can keep this case but will have to replace a fan or two and clean up cable management)

I dont want to spend more than R8000 on a CPU, Mobo and RAM kit. (i believe the other parts i can keep since they are still compatible and can upgrade later)

At the moment i was looking at either a i5 8400/16gb ram upgrade build or a Ryzen 5 2600/16gb build(first go at overclocking which makes me a bit nervous)

At the moment i have this in my cart (image attached) and would like some professional advice regarding the mobo features (there are so many options) and then also the ram speeds. Any advice on moving to AMD since i have a budget? This old boy sandybridge i5 has lasted me nearly 8 years which has caused me to trust intel builds more.

No worries. You can call either of them and they'll help you with a smile.

They both have m.2 slots. I would compare warranties and overclocking capability.

PS before you purchase ask and check if that ram will run at 3200Mhz on whichever MB you decide to go with!!!

Either will give you a significant boost, I suspect for games like csgo and pubg the 8400 will win but that's compared to a stock 2600 which you can always OC.

No idea what features you're talking about but do you need 2x m.2 slots for example, could probably get away with something a bit cheaper. check if that board will give you reasonable overclocks, also important to check if that 3200mhz ram will actually run at 3200mhz on the board you picked.

I dont have any use for m2 slots, so i guess i can actually drop some price and maybe pick up an aftermarket cooler since i will be OCing? What motherboard would you recommend for maximum ram speeds and decent overclocking capabilities?

Hi there,

Trying to build myself a pc. Some advice please. I originally wanted to keep the budget around 14k, but my build is sitting at 18k at the moment. I want a PC that's not going to struggle with what I want to do but I don't need a beast.
I want to use the pc for the adobe suite (PS, lightroom and also for video editing) and also some gaming.

How does this sound?
