Why not just use the cooler included in the box?
A quick google for reviews seemed to indicate it wasn't up to the task for sustained high loads? Maybe worth getting without the cooler initially and testing. I've tended to prefer cooler temps for increased CPU life.

Thinking about upgrading my i5 6600k and going with the seemingly very well priced Ryzen 5600. Does this cart make sense? Can use RAM etc from current build but need a new cooler as my Raijintek Aidos doesn't support AM4. Used for Lightroom and Dota 2 mostly.

I'd probably go 12th gen Intel at this point. More cores, more threads and higher boost clock for single-threaded workloads.

Yeah, I was very tempted to go 12600k - just a lot more money... Also need a better board than that and there isn't that much choice for Intel boards. Need 4 DIMM slots and ideally quite a bit of IO. Also it seems a waste to go for an unlocked CPU and not get Z690 for overclocking? Even if I don't intend to overclock...

There's also the 12400 which is all-around a bit better than the 5600...better single threaded performance, better at productivity especially in Adobe's suite. The stock cooler also works well at the default 65W power limit.

The MSI Pro B660M-A is about the same price as the motherboard you were looking at in your original post and is overkill in a power-delivery sense (the 12400 in 65W mode wouldn't even bother that much cheaper Asus motherboard).

It's a toss-up really - can't go wrong with either option.

12400 and something like this - seems like a really good value combo.

Not sure your primary use case though.

I’ve got both zen 3 (5900x work) and alder lake (12400 gaming). both great platforms it seems

Man, I could have saved that typing if you'd posted a few minutes earlier.

You suck :p

Wow, very interesting - thanks for sharing! Suitable Intel boards seem a lot pricier than comparable AMD boards unfortunately.

Got a friend a msi b450 mortar max for ~R2k not so long ago, awesome board. Did not bother with b550 as I don't think the am4 socket has much life left and the b450 runs the new cpus.

No idea, all I know it's a minefield with the intel 12th gen MBs. Best to research particular boards you are interested in.

Hardware unboxed has a few b660 videos https://www.youtube.com/c/Hardwareunboxednow/search?query=b660
I feel the Steves aren't aimed at ultra-budget non-enthusiast builds - where's the review for the people who only want a locked CPU and some XMP RAM? The normies as buildzoid says.

There are plenty people who just want an appliance, not an ongoing hobby project.

The first video had benchmarks where the cpus were not overclocked, it's not even possible on the majority of b660 boards.

The base TDP of even the 12600k is 50W higher than the max power draw of a 12400 (I don't know offhand what a 12100 would use but I imagine it's even less).

If we listened to just Steve-type reviews, we'd come away with the impression there is no place in the market for a motherboard that can't feed a 12600k at minimum. But where does that leave people looking at the 12100 or 12400 class of CPU? Paying for over-spec'd motherboards.

It would be amazing if even the 2 grand entry-level boards ran a 12900k fine but that's not the case and Steve expecting it to is kinda silly, imo.
