The plan to beat WhatsApp

If they really want to differentiate themselves, introduce an open API so that it can be an all purpose messaging platform instead of yet another chat app.
Telegram is open source. There are already unofficial apps which use Telegram API. Just use it.

BTW, not only Telegram, Signal too.

Telegram is cool, my one concern is sustainability - though all looks good for now and the fact that it's open source...

How does Telegram make money in the long run? What is it for, what's the purpose?

It's hard to understand, and it's the best messaging app ever.

Right now it's a rich man's plaything. No plans to make money. Who knows, maybe we'll have Jimmy Wales style banners once a year :D

We haven't had something like that since Jabber.

Telegram certainly looks like the real deal. It's just that thing of sustainability - the community will grow though. Open source + p2p would be better.

BBM died because they didn't release it for other platforms and it was a poor piece of software when it was released.

MXit died too... Advertising and user privacy is what will eventually kill WhatsApp, but if Facebook can keep WhatsApp ad free and secure, they'll probably last a long time.

They can't keep secure things wich are not secure. Whatsapp account can be easily cloned and the attacker will have access to all past and future messages.

MXit failed to capitalize on smartphones. The bot thing already existed on MXit in a earlier form.

WhatsApp is secure, unless you're a nut who believes someone is going to jump through hoops to read your messages.
I don't see the value in implementing ads in WhatsApp as it will have no context of the user so I highly doubt it.

People will complain that the privacy of their cell phone number is important but will install TrueCaller.

WeChat has a better chance of beating Whatsapp than Telegram.

When money runs out they have couple options.

1. Receive new donation.
2. Ask users for money (but they say they wouldn't).
3. Start to make money. Technology is already here - bots. Whatever they do, I am sure it will be not similar to facebook.

No context of the user?

You must be a niave little boy if you think Facebook doesn't know exactly who and what you are on WhatsApp.
