Porsche expands upgrade service for older models

Service includes gearbox conversions, uprated suspension packages and even Dakar-inspired off-road kit for the Mk1 Cayenne

Porsche will launch a new Performance Parts upgrade programme for older models this month, as part of the expansion of its in-house Classic division.

Customers will be able to bring their cars to official Porsche workshops to upgrade components to modern equivalents, and add performance packs to various models including older iterations of the 911 and even the ultra-rare 959 supercar.

The Performance Parts programme will include a kit for the 991-generation 911 GT2 RS, including an aerodynamics package, coilover suspension, special brake components and magnesium wheels. Updated parts for the previous-generation GT3 RS are available, too.

The first-generation Cayenne will receive its own range of uprated performance parts, with emphasis on its off-road capabilities. Dakar-inspired off-road upgrades will be available, as will two different wheel kits.

There is also the expectation that customers may request to make the switch between manual and PDK automatic gearboxes. “If it’s part of an overall concept and the customer was not able to find the right base car to start his project with the right transmission, we would certainly look into that,” said Alexander Fabig, Porsche’s head of personalisation and Classic.

New Porsche infotainment system destined for entire line-up

New PCM 6.0 operating system brings new apps, revamped display and adaptive music service concept

Porsche is expanding its connectivity features with stronger links to mobile devices, including implementing a new infotainment system with Android Auto connectivity.

The new Porsche Communication Management (PCM 6.0) system will feature a new display and operating system with some new features such as natural voice control, intelligent navigation, integrated streaming and Android Auto connectivity.

A basic version of PCM 6.0 was used for the first time in the Taycan, with plans to fit the 911, Cayenne and Panamera with the system soon.

“PCM 6.0 is certainly a big step we’re taking again. The look and feel is new – it’s tidier, it’s more intuitive,” said Martin Bayer, Porsche’s software engineer for connected infotainment.

“Personalisation is very important for us. We offer very individual settings for each individual Porsche customer – that means they have the option of configuring both the menu bar and the launcher themselves,” Bayer said. “They can drag and drop the controls they use most often into the launcher, and customise it to a very high degree.”

These were the best-selling Porsche models in the first half of 2021

As with its Lamborghini sister brand, SUVs account for more than half of all Porsches sold. The German sports car specialist has enjoyed a particularly strong start to the year, with worldwide sales increasing by 31 percent in the first six months of 2021, versus the same period last year.

The Cayenne and Macan SUVs collectively accounted for 56,9% of the 153 656 cars that Porsche sold between January and June. But it was actually a close tussle between the two high-riders, with the Cayenne finding 44 050 new homes and the Macan following closely with 43 618 sales. Year on year Macan sales were up 27% while the Cayenne’s tally grew by 12%.

The 911 was the third most popular Porsche range in the first half, attracting 20 611 sales (or 13% of the total). This represented an increase of 22% versus the same period in 2020. The 911 was followed closely by the Taycan electric sedan, which saw 19 822 sales. The least popular Porsche models in H1 were the Panamera (13 633 units) and 718 Boxster and Cayman range (11 922), although the latter did enjoy a 33% jump year-on-year.

Porsche breaks ground at synthetic fuel plant in Chile

Dedicated plant will produce sustainable fuel for combustion-engined Porsche models from 2022

Construction is underway at the Chile factory where Porsche will produce synthetic fuel for combustion-engined cars from 2022.

The company is aiming to begin trials of its own synthetic fuel next year, and it will be compatible with unmodified combustion engines. Initially, however, it will be limited to motorsport applications, with its first outing set to be in Porsche's Mobil 1 Supercup race cars next year.

Earlier this year, Porsche sports car product boss Frank Walliser said: "We are on track, together with our partners in South America. For sure, in 2022, it will be very, very small volume for the first trials.

"It's a long road with huge investment, but we are sure that this is an important part of our global effort to reduce the CO2 impact of the transportation sector."

Last year, the company announced partnerships with energy firms Siemens Energy, AME and Enel and the Chilean petroleum company ENAP, with the ambition of developing a plant for the commercial production of synthetic fuels, or e-fuels, on an industrial scale. The first stage, called Haru Oni, will use southern Chile’s “excellent” wind conditions to produce synthetic fuel with the aid of wind power.

The Porsche 964 Turbo from ‘Bad Boys’ is up for auction

The actual car that outran a Cobra on an airfield could be YOURS

Watcha gonna do when... a bona fide movie Porsche comes up for auction? Bet your very last dollar. Especially if it’s a 964 Turbo driven by Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Welcome to today’s fantasy shop: the Porsche 911 from 1995’s Bad Boys.

Yep, the car that managed to outrun a Shelby Cobra, and one used as unofficial shorthand for Smith’s character being a petrolhead, could be yours. Mecum Auctions has put this Turbo as the ‘Main Attraction’ in its upcoming January 2022 Kissimmee sale.

And what an attraction. Just one of fewer than 350 964 Turbos built for the United States, this one’s a ’94 model, complete with that 3.6-litre flat-six turbo engine slung out back, mated to a five-speed manual ‘box in the middle. It looks to be in absolutely mint condition considering it’s a) very old and b) appeared in a Michael Bay movie and was therefore only ever six seconds away from a slow-motion explosion.

Mr Bay himself owned this very car, after which its history takes a few turns. Bay sold it to film producer Pat Sandstone, who in turn sold it to the current owner in 2005, who in turn sold it to the Matthew Drendel collection in 2008 before buying it back in 2014.

Porsche has finally made a Vision Gran Turismo concept

After 20 years of absence from Gran Turismo, Porsche is now all in thanks to this electric racer

It feels a little while since we’ve had a Vision Gran Turismo concept, but they’re back. And how. This is Porsche’s first, and a wheeled U-turn to add to its generous collection.

Those of us of a certain age will clearly remember picking up the very first Gran Turismo in 1997, carefully popping the disc under the grey lid of our PlayStation 1 before excitedly perusing the many and numerous cars on offer to find… no Porsches. In their place, some weirdly familiar looking things going by the name ‘Ruf’.

Yep, for years Porsche didn’t officially supply its cars to the franchise owing to an exclusivity agreement with Need for Speed, something that’s only changed in the last five years. Its cars joined GT in 2017 and now, as if to solidify the friendship, comes the Porsche Vision GT concept.

“I don’t think anybody has been fired because of that decision back then!” jokes Porsche’s brand and partnerships boss Deniz Keskin, before informing TG this is “the first Porsche explicitly designed for a computer game”.

It’s fully electric, as you might reasonably expect, and it's been over two years in the making. We’re told the design is as pure as possible, with all of the visual weight nipped out of it and a stature that recalls the 356 and 550 sports cars of Porsche’s early years.

“Looking at some Vision GT cars form other companies in the past, we could see some were huge,” says exterior designer Ingo Bauer-Scheinhütte, “uber-hypercars that looked more like fighter planes and less like cars.

“The Germans are a serious bunch, and we take car design seriously as well. So we decided to do something that feels real and which you imagine seeing on the road in a few years.”

It’s designed to look mid-engined, suggesting perfect weight distribution, and while the voluptuous fenders we know well from Caymans and 911s are carried over, the front pair no longer house the headlights.

New Porsche Gran Turismo concept hints at brand's EV future

Video-game concept blends futuristic cues with elements inspired by Porsche's most successful sports cars

Porsche has created a new electric sports car concept for the seventh instalment of the Gran Turismo video-game franchise, giving clues to the brand’s evolving design language as it embraces electrification.

Named the Vision Gran Turismo, it is Porsche’s first stand-alone concept for the racing series, following cars revealed by Audi, Bugatti, Jaguar, McLaren and Toyota in recent years. It will become ‘drivable’ when the new game is released on 4 March 2022.

Although there is no production intent for the concept, Porsche has built a full-size physical counterpart, and exterior design boss Ingo Bauer-Scheinhütte told Autocar that realism was a priority.

“That’s what we tried to achieve: that it feels like it could be on the road,” he said, adding that “there are always design elements that you might see on future cars.”

The Vision Gran Turismo comes soon after the reveal of the Porsche Mission R concept, which more closely previews future production cars – specifically, the electric next-generation 718 Boxster roadster and Cayman coupé.

Porsche Vision Gran Turismo Concept

Porsche and the Japanese video game development studio Polyphony Digital Inc., a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, present a spectacular vehicle concept.

The 'Gran Turismo' game series has featured Porsche sports cars since 2017, most recently the Taycan Turbo S. For the launch of the game's seventh edition, Porsche has, for the first time, developed a vehicle purely for the virtual world. The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo is the sports car manufacturer's first concept study created specifically for use in a computer game. It will be available exclusively in Gran Turismo 7.

By partnering with Polyphony Digital, Porsche is not only demonstrating its special visionary approach, but is once again also demonstrating the high level of expertise among its designers. Freed from the constraints of developing models for series production, they were able to put their own ideas for a Gran Turismo concept car into practice. "A vehicle designed purely for the virtual world opens up exciting possibilities for us that are otherwise heavily regimented in a regular design process for a series production car," says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. "Projects such as the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo are particularly valuable for us in the creative process. Further developing our clearly defined Porsche Design DNA and exchanging with designers from other industries is an important part of our work."

Porsche Vision Gran Turismo revealed as digital racer with electric power

The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo has been revealed as a digital design study that will be implemented into the upcoming edition of the seventh game, due to hit the PS5 next year. By partnering with Polyphony Digital, Porsche hopes to demonstrate its a visionary approach and high level of expertise among its designers.

The Porsche Vision Gran Turismo features future-oriented versions of familiar Porsche design elements. The concept car exhibits the brand’s typical proportions with an especially sporty height-to-width ratio, an extremely low-set bonnet and very pronounced wings. The lights in the front and the integrated air intakes create a visual link to the design language of the Taycan. This is a nod to the car’s purely electric drive. The rear is fitted with a markedly narrow light strip which is a further development of the light signature that is familiar from the 911 and Taycan models.

“The appeal of a Porsche comes from its purist design,” says Kazunori Yamauchi, President, Polyphony Digital. “And in terms of engineering expertise, both we and Porsche follow the same perfectionist philosophy. We share the same passion for racing and are looking to the future of the car.” In addition to purely design-related themes, there are also new functions that contribute to a strong sports car feeling, with players experiencing haptic feedback via the controller, which mimics the feel of the steering wheel. This fast and direct feedback is reminiscent of a real racing car.

Original Porsche Cayenne gets retro rally-themed redesign

Porsche Classic showcases aftermarket parts that give Dakar-themed takes on Mk1 Cayenne

The first-generation Porsche Cayenne has been given an official rally-inspired makeover to promote a new range of personalisation options for older Porsche models.

A pair of Cayennes have been restyled and upgraded by the in-house Porsche Classic division, gaining skid plates, chunky off-road tyres, rally-style wheels and spotlights, as well as new retro-inspired decal packs, which are the only parts currently available to order from Porsche. The black car even features a collapsible roof tent.

The custom wheels, mud flaps and roof baskets aren’t yet available through the Classic division, although Porsche says these parts are “currently being tested for feasibility.”

The original Cayenne features an all-wheel drive system with a dynamic centre differential lock, which, Porsche says, gives the car “exceptional off-road properties”. Porsche Classic’s makeover is intended to showcase the SUV’s 4x4 credentials.

Porsche will display the cars at selected events in order to “obtain feedback from customers and fans and take this into account when deciding on the development and reissue of individual parts.”
