The Porsche (Porscha) Thread

The ultimate Porsche you can't buy in real-life, but can own in Gran Turismo on PS5
  • Porsche has created a bespoke sports car for the forthcoming Gran Turismo 7 game on Sony PlayStation 5.
  • The all-electric vehicle will not be series-produced and will showcase Porsche technology in the virtual world.
  • Expect it to be one of the quickest vehicles in the game, thanks to a 950kW of motivational force (with overboost).
Since 1997, the Gran Turismo racing simulator on Sony PlayStation has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon. We've been playing the game since launch, and with each iteration of the game, more and more of our friends and family have joined us. We love that we can drive the cars of our dreams in photo-realistic worlds around some of the greatest racing circuits in existence.

The earlier games in the series didn't feature all makes and models of cars, and we used to be significantly perturbed that we couldn't find Porsche cars in the Gran Turismo games.

Porsche had struck a game rights deal with Electronic Arts (you might remember Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed), which meant Polyphony Digital, the makers of Gran Turismo, had to turn to German vehicle specialist RUF to be able to feature "Porsche" cars in its simulator.

Nevertheless, we have fond memories of blasting through Special Stage Route 5 in the RUF Yellowbird.

Cayenne joins the Porsche Classic family with accessories and decal sets

Very nearly twenty years on, the Porsche Cayenne has been every bit the success that Porsche had intended, perhaps even more so, much to the dismay of Porsche purists. It is, however, thanks to revenues from the Cayenne and now the Macan that Porsche has been able to not only grow from strength to strength, but also put more money into the R&D of their sports cars – just for the purists – and establish new sub-brands such as Porsche Classic, which services older models with spare parts and even a full accessories range, which comprisies items such as the remarkable PCCM.

Porsche Classic has now welcomed the first-generation 955/957 Cayenne to its line up with two test beds being used to preview potential individualisation options for the SUV. While the Hunt, Adventure and Rallye decal sets showcase some rather cool ideas for the potential customers, Porsche note that these are not sold as compete packages, but rather hint at the “approach that first-generation Cayenne owners will be able to take.”

Eduard Reichert, Manager of Product and Quality Management at Porsche Classic, said, “We have seen what owners have already been doing to their vehicles, when it comes to roof tents, extra lights, and all-terrain tires, for example. We will be offering customers the chance to equip their cars in a very unique way. Individual and sporty.”

Porsche introduces updated infotainment for 2022 models

PCM 6.0 operating system brings new apps, revamped display and wireless Android support

Newly-configured Porsche 911, Taycan, Cayenne and Panamera models will now arrive with the firm's latest Porsche Communication Management (PCM) 6.0 infotainment system.

The upgrade includes stronger links to mobile devices, a revised user interface and wireless Android Auto functionality.

Natural voice control, and intelligent navigation that can better plan charging stops for electric vehicles is also part of the latest software.

Another key feature that will be introduced is the integration of Spotify, which connects to the service directly without having to use a smartphone.

A basic version of PCM 6.0 was used for the first time in the Taycan, but now Porsche is rolling out the software to newly-configured Porsche 911, Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Panamera models, starting in the next few weeks.

Is is unclear if these latest updates will be rolling out to existing owners, although Porsche has previously said that PCM 6.0-equipped cars would be able to recieve over-the-air updates.

Another sales record expected for Porsche this year despite chip shortages

The chip shortage has been with us for a while now and it has hit the automotive sector fairly hard but Porsche expects another sales record for 2022 despite the hindrance in 2021 that still saw them sell over 300 000 new cars worldwide.

Detlev von Platen, the Porsche executive board member responsible for sales and marketing recently gave some insight in Berlin for the German automakers expected form this year. He assured that with current orders brewing, he has high confidence for sales in 2022, even after Porsche reached new sales heights in 2021. More on the Stuttgart based marque here.

After growing in demand in all global sales regions during 2021 with China purchasing almost a third of every vehicle sold, Porsche sales numbers inevitably grew, by 11% to be exact. If this trend continues in 2022, over 335 000 units could be sold globally which would have seemed impossible for the brand that only sold 19 000 new products in 1996.

Porsche production halts amidst Russo-Ukrainian conflict

After losing thousands of new units aboard the now sunken Felicity Ace transport vessel, it seems things are going to get worse for Porsche production as activities grind to a halt in Leipzig amidst the Russo-Ukrainian feud which will add to their growing waiting period for new models.

Porsche production in the Stuttgart based Zuffenhausen mega factory is currently up but the Leipzig factory in the East German state of Saxony ceased temporarily on the 2nd of March. While neither of these factories are in direct danger of the Russian invasion of their Ukrainian neighbours, supply chain issues already hampered by the shortage of semiconductors has warranted the German automaker halt production at some locations. This will potentially have adverse effects on all models in Porsche’s portfolio.

Management of the German automaker remain optimistic that the Leipzig factory shutdown will cease on the 11th of March after a Porsche spokesperson stated “further steps will take place in an orderly process. In the coming days and weeks, we will operate on a short-term basis and continuously reassess the situation.”

While Zuffenhausen has not had any adverse effects as severe as shutdown, this delay should hinder the manufacturers delivery timelines of certain models. Leaked information states that Macan and Panamera production at the factory will have ceased on the 3rd of March while Cayenne production ceased on the 7th. If things worsen, 718 production will stop on the 14th of March while the 911 with GT3 / Touring production halt three days later.

Porsche AG: Over 80% of new Porsches to be electric by 2030

Over the past financial year, Porsche AG has underpinned its position as one of the world’s most profitable automobile manufacturers having reached a new all-time high in both sales revenue and operating profit.

Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG said, “Our positive business result is based on courageous, innovative and forward-looking decisions,”

Our industry is experiencing what is probably the greatest transformation in its history.”

This growth comes despite continued woes such as the global semiconductor shortage amongst others. Lutz Meschke, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board and Member of the Executive Board for Finance and IT adds, “We are resolutely driving forward investments in electrification, digitalisation and sustainability. I am optimistic that Porsche will emerge from the current global crises stronger.”

On that front, Blume notes, “Porsche is looking at the armed conflict in Ukrainewith great concern and dismay,”

Porsche wants 80% of the cars it sells in 2030 to be fully electric

On Friday, Porsche announced its results from the past fiscal year. The German luxury sports car manufacturer made €33.1 billion, up 15% of the previous year’s sales (€28.7 billion). It also saw a 27% increase YoY in operating profit, which was €5.3 billion. Posrche also delivered the strongest numbers in the company’s history, with a total of 301,915 cars worldwide during fiscal 2021.

Porsche’s EV offering, the Taycan, sold more than twice as many as the year before (41,296) outselling the 911, which shipped 38,464 units. Posrche expects to release another EV in 2025, when it expects to release a new version of the mid-engine that will be exclusively electric.

Porsche notes that by 2025, “half of all Porsche sales are expected to come from the sale of electric vehicles – i.e. all-electric or plug-in hybrid,” Meanwhile, the company expects that more than 80% of new Porsche vehicles sold will have an all-electric drive.
