Some stunning results obtained by rob54321 using a Poynting XPOL-0002-V2 antenna on Telkom Mobile described here.

As far as I'm aware, this is the first recorded forum install and test result for Poynting's XPOL-0002-V2 (Version 2) design. Version 2 is the one tweaked to perform a little better in the 2300-2400MHz band, where Telkom Mobile operates LTE. Some of the background to these design changes is discussed here.

Nice setups. I am going to get so flamed now.... Before Poynting was used we were instructed to use ellies TV antenna to boost cellular signal. Even had an adaptor cable from normal coax to plug directly into phone. Still use this today. I just wound my own coil for the transmitter side. I get 2 - 3 bars reception where I was lucky to get 1. Poynting is expensive. But its professional.

I'm selling my HUAWEI B593 LTE router with extra antenna, hardly used (i bought it a while ago when my ADSL line was really funky). It's back to normal again so no use for the LTE modem anymore.

I have a newbie question. I haven't read the entire thread, so I apologise if it's been asked/answered already.

Does the antenna improve both download and upload speed, or simply download speed?

Hi Nizwe - welcome!

First thing : be sure that your B593 is actually connecting in 4G mode in both scenarios, so that you compare apples with apples.
When you say you have 'full signal', that may be true in 3G mode but not necessarily 4G mode.
Quick check is if the 'Mode' light is on/flashing in blue (4G). Green means a 3G connection and any other colour is bad news lol.

You don't state which sub-model of the B593 you have. Hopefully it's the B593s-601 that supports operation in all modes and on all frequencies currently in use in SA. That's FDD on 1800MHz as used by MTN/Vodacom and TDD on 2300MHz as used by Telkom Mobile. If you bought your B593 from Poynting (expensive!) that should hopefully be the 's-601.

If you are indeed connecting in 4G mode in both scenarios, then your speed improvement may not be huge if your signal is already as good as you say. However your Vodacom speed looks to me like a reasonable 4G connection, whereas your Telkom result looks a bit suspect (should be at least 10Mbps in 4G with full signal).

If it turns out that in fact you are connecting on 3G with Telkom Mobile, then connecting the XPOL-0002 should improve matters considerably by getting you into 4G if you have signal in your area.
The antenna should improve both up- and down- results, but note that you will see very different up/down speed results on Vodacom/MTN (which uses FDD) versus Telkom Mobile (TDD).
On FDD the up- and down-speeds should be comparable, whereas on Telkom TDD the downlink speed will be much higher than the uplink speed. Telkom state that they run their LTE service on a 3:1 down:up ratio, but in practise it seems to me that 10:1 is a more typical user experience.

Edit: Question : did you get the XPOL-0002-V2, or is it the XPOL-0002-V1 ?

Great! Then you have the best tool for the job and the freedom to run 4G on any of the currently-available SA networks (signal permitting).

I don't know if my XPOL 002 is V1 or V2. I assumed it was V2, since I bought it yesterday. How do I tell?
It should be marked clearly on the antenna's nameplate. Look carefully for a marking of : "XPOL-0002-V1" or "XPOL-0002-V2"
The -V1 is a previous design that isn't ideal for operation with Telkom Mobile (but is fine for Vodacom and MTN). The -V2 is a modified version that is also optimised for use with Telkom Mobile at 2300MHz, but still retains its capabilities in the 1800MHz band as well.
If you mentioned to Poynting that you intended to use Telkom Mobile, then they should automatically have given you a -V2.
If by some chance you have a -V1, and you intend (ever) to use Telkom 4G/LTE, then I would recommend you exchange it for a -V2.

The signal transmitted from the base-station to your device (ie on the downlink) will be amplified by your local antenna to improve signal level and hence performance (reliability and speed). But the signals transmitted by the base stations are already quite powerful, which is why you can often get quite reasonable downlink speed even using just the built-in antennas.
When you send information from your PC up to the internet (ie on the uplink), your B593 is transmitting a signal from itself back to the base station. By contrast to the base-station, the signal that the B593 transmits is quite weak. But the uplink signal also goes via the local antenna, and that local antenna works equally well in either direction, ie for received or transmitted signals. On the uplink, a properly-aligned external antenna helps by "focusing" all of the B593's rather weak signal directly at the base station.

OK my xpol was a v1. Took it back to Poynting. They say they don't have any v2s but they sold me two a-lpda-0020-v2s which will apparently accommodate all networks...

Had to pay in an extra R500

Ouch! Your wallet must be sizzling.
It would've been better to start with an assessment of your available signal(s), and determine what antenna solution you needed from there. But oh well ...
Albeit in hindsight, have a look at Azimuth's summary of the available Poynting LTE antenna options in the third post of this thread.

But at any rate, you have ended up with a pretty good solution in the LPDA-0020's, if a little bit more fussy to install than the XPOL-0002. At least Poynting gave you the Telkom-tweaked LPDA-0020-V2s straight off this time!

PS: The Poynting XPOL-0002-V2 is new and still quite rare, but it exists. Rob54321 describes his experience with one around here.

Any thoughts?

Hi Mike !

Some things to check / consider :

1) Check that your B593 is actually detecting and using your XPOL-0001 external antenna. If the firmware on the B593s-22 is similar to that on the B593s-601, you can confirm this at the bottom of the "Home / Overview" page. The XPOL-0001 should be detected correctly, but check that both ports show "External". If it isn't being detected - and again, if the firmware is similar to that on the B593s-601 - you can force the use of the external antennas by changing the setting on the "System / Antenna Settings" page.

2) You mention that you've looked at your signal stats on the B593 UI (which is a good thing!). Please post the actual values here so that we can see them ?

3) Are you actually getting a 4G/LTE connection (blue mode light) or a 3G connection (green mode light) ?

4) If you only have one signal bar displayed, then it sounds like the signal is pretty weak/poor in your area anyway, but 1 bar is at least a start. It sounds like you really need to get that B593 (or the XPOL-0001) up high and/or outside to see if you get any improvement. In most cases, just getting the antenna system (built-in or external) onto the roof of a dwelling as opposed to indoors will get you a good 10dBm of signal improvement.

5) When you use the XPOL-0001, where is it positioned ? Indoors or outdoors, window, roof, etc ?
Bear in mind that the XPOL-0001 is a comparatively inexpensive, low-gain omnidirectional antenna. With the full 5 metres of cable connected, the gain of the antenna will more or less cancel out the loss of signal incurred in the cable, so you will end up basically back where you were with the built-in antennas. The real "gain" (pun not intended) of the XPOL-0001 comes from putting the antenna high up and/or outside. In other words, you can think of it as an alternative to moving the B593 itself up high and/or outside.

Again, if you have so little signal to start with, and with a comparatively low-gain antenna, you need to do everything possible to maximise what you have:
- Get the antenna (or B593) as high as possible, and in as clear a space as possible - on the roof is ideal
- Experiment to find the optimum antenna position and orientation.
- If you can, try to minimise the length of antenna cable used.

If you really can't get any improvement with these measures, then you may need to consider the use of higher-gain antenna system (which does not necessarily need to be directional - you can still get good results on LTE without line-of-sight).

I have good 3G/HSPA signal where I am but sometimes I get cut off and the connection slows so bad that I get kicked while playing games online the whole time. Over the weekends mostly I have no issues (I just think I might be getting throttled) Anyway I have a Huawei Mobile wifi router, the E5776s-601, will the XPOL-A0010 make any difference? Hi Nakkels ! Welcome to the forum.

You mention that you have good 3G/HSDPA signal, but you don't say where you are or which service provider you are using ?
I presume you ultimately want to use your E5776 in 4G/LTE mode for better connection reliability and speed. Have you tried the modem in 4G mode and if so, how did it work ?

Bear in mind that the XPOL-0010 is not a "booster" per se, it is a completely passive antenna. That said, it does provide some "boost" in the form of a modest signal gain - around 2dBi, which translates to about a 60% stronger signal (compared to using a true omnidirectional (isotropic) antenna).

The big question is this : to get the full benefit of LTE, your E5776 needs to be using two antennas (or one dual-element antenna, like the XPOL-0010). When using the built-in antennas, that happens anyway. However if you want to use an external antenna (indoor or outdoor) in 4G/LTE mode, then you need TWO antenna connector sockets to connect to two antennas (or to both elements of one dual-element antenna, as in the case of the XPOL-0010).

However, from the little bit I've read about the E5776, it seems to me that it only has one antenna connector ?

Without spending vast sums of money, what should I be shopping for, I can see I need at least an antenna (or 2) which I could then plug into the modem. But it looks like if I get a router too then I can use it for my phone and laptop on wifi, do I need lightning protection? I have a pole outside from when I installed old style TV aerials 12 years ago. I live in a black hole where it comes to signal, cellc is currently the most likely to have some signal, Telkom say they can't even provide LTE in my part of midrand. I would really like to have decent signal for working remotely as well as cell phone signal on both Vodacom and cellc.

Hey jenniew ! Welcome.

First off : you don't say which area you are in, but if you are in one of the major centres, a visit to Poynting's physical showroom will get you a lot of good advice. Take your modem with you and they'll be able to advise you on the right antennas and cables and very possibly demo a setup for you.
Poynting also do signal assessments and installations at your premises, if you opt for a fixed installation.

Edit: Oops! You did say Midrand, sorry.
In that case, Poynting's showrooms just off Samrand Road are perfect for you.


I can't get ADSL at home so my boss bought me an LTE modem with a Vodacom 3G sim. Without spending vast sums of money, what should I be shopping for, I can see I need at least an antenna (or 2) which I could then plug into the modem.
Second thing : 3G is one technology and 4G (LTE) is another. Speaking very broadly, under the right conditions (good signal etc), 3G will get you best-case speeds up to about 15Mbps and 4G/LTE will get you anywhere between 20 and 80Mbps.
However to make use of LTE's speed and reliability, you need a modem that supports LTE, a SIMcard that is provisioned for LTE, a local base-station and operator that provides LTE service, and a dual-channel antenna system that gets you good LTE signal.
Note : "good dual-channel antenna system" for LTE does not necessarily equate to "expensive". It depends what signal you have to start with.

Things to check:
  • Your "3G SIM" may or may not be provisioned for Vodacom LTE.
  • You don't state what type of LTE modem you have ? Is it a USB "stick modem", or a fixed-wireless device like a Huawei B593 ?
The basic "recipe" to do what you want is as follows:
  1. Determine which of the cellular wireless operators offers 3G and/or 4G service in your area. Note that only Vodacom, MTN and Telkom currently offer 4G service - CellC is threatening to roll it out, but hasn't done so yet. (see comment on using coverage maps later on). There's also Neotel, who use 4G for last-mile connectivity in some areas.
  2. Determine whether your current setup (modem+SIMcard) is 3G or 3G/4G capable, and whether that is what you need/want based on services available in your area.
  3. If possible, try to ascertain where the various operators' local base stations in your area are. Operators do share infrastructure, so you'll often find multiple operators (all four, in some cases) on the same mast, so this is not as much of a schlepp as it might seem. It's a very worthwhile exercise and an investment in your future signal arrangements (4.5G, 5G, .... etc) as these stations obviously don't move (though new ones might be added).
  4. Using SIMcard(s) from the operator(s) you plan to use, make an assessment of the quality of signal you have already. Ideally this should include a check with the modem up on the roof, as an indication of what might be possible with outdoor external antennas. If you're not comfortable doing this, get a professional installer in.
  5. The signal(s) you have, and the results you want, will largely determine what antenna arrangements you need and the corresponding budget. Unfortunately there's no sure-fire one-size-fits-all solution - especially if you have no signal or no service in the first place! The budget for an "appropriate" antenna system can range from zero (good signal and internal antennas adequate) to as much as R5k. Again, as a very rough rule of thumb, in developed areas with reasonable signal, I would say that most folks can do very well with an antenna budget well under R2k (parts only).
  6. Decide whether you're happy to lock yourself in to one network and provider (like Telkom), or whether you want the flexibility to change. That can have a bearing on your antenna choice.
  7. Make your choice of antenna(s) and modem/router based on the above considerations, and on your budget.

Yes. If you get a combination modem/router that has Wi-Fi, then you will be able to access your cellular wireless internet connection using any device that has Wi-Fi, which is a cool setup. An alternative would be a Wi-Fi router that can take a 3G or 4G USB stick modem, though these can be more finicky to set up.

In my opinion, for a fixed-wireless installation, you can't beat a device like the Huawei B593s-601 that :
  • Has support for all current SA 3G and 4G operators and bands
  • Works in both 3G and 4G modes.
  • Has excellent dual internal (built-in) LTE antennas.
  • Has twin antenna ports to facilitate the use of a dual-channel external antenna system for LTE.
  • Has a built-in 4-port switch and Wi-Fi access point.
  • Works as a "standalone" device that is separately powered and does need to be connected into the side of your laptop to work.
  • Does not require any special drivers or software.
A slightly cheaper alternative would be a 3G-only standalone modem/router device like the Huawei B683/B68A.
If you need mobility, then obviously a USB stick modem is a better choice, but it sounds to me like you want to operate primarily in a fixed location ?

That depends if you go for outdoor external antennas or not, how they are installed, and your tolerance for risk.
Tall, isolated external antennas do increase lightning risk, especially on the highveld. Lightning protection does add cost, however, so it's your call on risk versus cost.
My advice is that if you do go for external antennas on a pole, always use protection ;) - particularly if you are ever going to connect any device(s) to your modem/router with LAN cables (as opposed to with Wi-Fi).

See earlier comment about CellC and 4G.
Best approach here is to use the various providers' coverage maps (like this one from Telkom). Bear in mind that these maps are approximate and are drawn up for "typical indoor" conditions. If you are not too far from the "edge" of a designated signal area, you still have a pretty good chance, especially from the roof. If you measure even "one bar" of signal during a physical test, you have a very good chance of improving matters dramatically with antennas.

With a little investment and some effort, it's quite possible you could get great signal for internet access.

Just to be clear, antennas attached to a fixed-wireless cellular internet device have no bearing on other cellphone devices and will not improve "normal" cellphone voice reception at all. They are used purely to improve the performance of the fixed-wireless device itself (which is almost always a data-only device).
However, if you allow your cellphone(s) to connect to your Wi-Fi network and thereby share your (hopefully good) internet connection, they too will benefit by having good internet connectivity for browsing, email etc.
PC and smartphone applications that allow you to make voice calls over the internet, like Skype, and WhatsApp Voice Calling (just launched) are different - they of course will benefit greatly from a good internet connection.
