Dean "Ed Cowan" Elgar remains consistent with his healthy starts, but if he's not scoring big hundreds at a high strike rate for a man of his experience then he must forget about the ODI side.

On a side note, which foreign player has ever really failed here either playing in the domestic competitions or for their A side?

Yeah not the strongest it has been, also probably not the strongest B team we could have played. But we could have done far worse I think. Morris showing us again why he deserves a shot at the number 7 spot. Elgar also doing good.

A list of worse examples would easily roll of my tongue so don't even go there. Plenty of higher ranked players have been dropped ... or forced into retirement. That's a very weak example. Morkel's been in very poor form. Just look at a lot of people's comments in the match threads ... perhaps even your own comments.

He's been poor and outbowled in a number of games too even for the Lions by (Viljoen, Rabada etc never mind Tsotsobe) so it's hard to make a strong case for him on the bowling front ahead of other options, even Rory outbowled him in FC games so suggested more out of hope than certainty. McLaren would fancy coming back in ahead of him, while Parnell&Philander would rightly feel they are better number 7 candidates than he is.

Rusty is th eguy who could make a discernible impact because the team has been poor when the pressure is on. Only Steyn has been aboe to cope.

We need to be careful what we conider a strong B team. Most of the players considered now have failed even on very flat pitches.

Stiaan van Zyl failed over 3 innings when a very strong Australia A side toured, yet he somehow made a Test debut ahead of better players by accident i.e. injuries and acquitted himself well.

I doesn't always follow that player (or team) performance in A matches count much or are a true measure of how well they might do at the next stage. Elgar has always dominated a A level but pretty much ordinary at international level. Marchant&Abbott had unbelievable Test debuts despite being ordinary in A matches. Beuran has usually done ok in A matches but an absolute disaster in T20Is.

At the end of the day it comes down to the purpose. England players, like the Aussies, came down for a reason. E.g in FC Trott has ensured that he'll be part of the next England squad. Robson&Lyth were fighting to see who will partner Cook opening etc. It's clear now Robson will get only one Test and if he fails Lyth comes in. Wood/Bresnan/Plunkett/Rankin etc are all fighting for a place and we won't be surprised if Wood makes the next English Test squad. Roy might just be the answer if Bell+Ali fail at the CWC. Stokes proving his mental problems are over.

Contrast that with SA A. No matter how well Ontong/Vilas do we know they won't play for the national team again. Whereas EVERYONE in the England Lions squad is in contention for ODI/Test selection. Reeza has been our best opener but he won't get picked there. RR, SvZ&QdK will all be recycled before he gets a solid chance. Theunis de Bruyn will be hard to ignore, so they might ignore making heartbreaking decisions to accomodate him at the expense of those three too.

In the end we're helping other teams make up their minds. Australia before, India after that, now England.

Does anyone think SA should select Jason Roy and beat England to it, just England did to Australia where Robson is concerned?

Had a run of bad form and rumor has it fell out with Cook. Even with Cook no longer odi captain we wll know you need to be in cook's good books to be in the side ;)

Thank you. Seems axing him did the opposite to his performance. Quite a performance today with bat and ball.

Aha :o Totally agreed on Ontong. If he is in because they think he is part of the national side future, then that is a concern.

Thanks Squire. Axed it seems. Not a Cook lackey. And there you have a really good all-rounder missing out. England will be hoping they get an "appropriate" injury to bring him in. For the rest of us, we hope not.

Could have finished worse I suppose, but 3-0 down in the 5-match series is a real shocker. Considering some of the players in our A side have international exposure, I honestly would have expected better results and performances.
