The Proteas - Our Team!

I wouldn't have Philander in the ODI team, I'd keep him as a test specialist. Lopsy is an excellent limited overs bowler, so I'd have him or De Lange in place of Philander.

I completely agree Mike. Unfortunately, Philander's style of cricket is not suited to the one day game. Batsmen use their feet to wreck havoc on the fourth stump line and the ball generally stops swinging a little earlier. He doesn't have express pace on his side either, which gives batsmen the time to improvise, playing shots like the dilscoop and moving outside the offstump to flick through midwicket.

Lopsy on the other hand cramps that movement by moving the ball across the right hander and swinging it back in. He's not the No. 1 ranked ODI bowler for nothing, and is definitely deserving of his place in the squad.

Da Lange is not yet ready to handle the pressures of ODI cricket. And for the sake of variety, if we were to replace him, I'd suggest it for Morne rather than Lopsy.

Everything you say makes perfect sense, but i would not pick Albie Morkel, his ODI record is very very poor, rather go for W Coetzee/Cliffe Deacon if you want a all-rounder, or even Justin Ontong has matured as a batsman. Personally i still believe Vernon Philander has the most to offer

Another player i would love to see in the mix is Dean Elgar, if and when someone takes over from Smith, my bets will be on Elgar

Permanentmarker has the right team. It would be dumb not to put Smith in the test side. Have you forgotten how many 100's and 50's smith got against SL and NZ, which is the most recent games played. Smith's stats are above average (In fact very good stats) in tests and his experience is something you need in a Test match against Number 1 Test Team.

I can't wait for the England series. Captain Biff will be retiring another English captain. Hussain and Vaughn have fallen in two previous tours, Strauss its your turn.

Well if Biff and Rudolph score as they have before against England in England the Pommie bowlers are in for loooong days.

My test XI:

GC Smith*
JA Rudolph
HM Amla
J Kallis
AB de Villiers
JP Duminy
MV Boucher†
DW Steyn
VD Philander
M Morkel
I Tahir

My ODI XI:

GC Smith
HM Amla
J Kallis
AB de Villiers †*
F du Plessis
JP Duminy
A. Morkel
DW Steyn
M Morkel
I Tahir
L Tsotsobe

I concur, except that I'm still nervous with Tahir in the ODI team. But I agree that if he is getting punished then the remaining overs can be shared by Kallis, JP and Faf (assuming atht Albie bowls his full complement of overs).

Well from there we have

Steyn 10
Lobsy 10
M Morkel 10

That leaves 20 overs to go between:
Kallis
Duminy
Faf
Tahir
A Morkel

I am sure between those five we can manage 20 overs ;)

Sigh.....Why Albie????
i just dont understand it, am i missing something?

Because he has the ability to change the outcome of any game.

He has failed time and again at international level, TIME AND AGAIN, he has a pathetic ODI record, how many chances must he still get?
It saddens me to think there are guys in the domestic level, playing great cricket season in and out but never gets a chance, but people still opt for Albie

Because Albie is good (not his bowling all that much), it is the fact that people expect him to walk in 9/10 times and hit the last 8 balls for 9000 runs.....

I hope Kirsten is wise enough to apply the Albie factor correctly.

The problem is not Albie, but the way he is used. Even in the IPL they don't have a clue how to use him. You can't send the guy in with 12 balls left every time and expect him to score 72.

Then why not use Levi?, im sure he will beter in a scenario of needing 30 of 2 overs?

I remember Albie in the Australië series, i think it was Tait or Johnson bowling to him, my friend was sitting next to me, so i told him watch, i bet you they will bowl him clean out first ball, guess what happened....
I don’t know, i just don’t rate him, he is good when he faces average bowlers, but he is lost when he faces a good bowler, maybe (hopefully) I’m wrong, but after the amount of matches he has played, i just can’t see him making any impact

Look, im not saying Levi is gr8 or the next prodigy, im just saying wont he do better in a big hitting role than Albie

It doesn't matter who you choose, what matters is how you use them. Levi won't do any better than Albie if he's brought in when there are 12 balls left in the innings and he's expected to hit each ball for 6.

As said Albie needs to be employed better.

I do not believe so.

Albie can hit the ball to any part of the field. Levi is pretty restricted, although I'm sure Gary Kirsten and company are working on his technique (for the future).

If only we can get someone like Gayle our T20 issues will be sorted and we won't even need Levi or Albie.
44 sixes thus far.
