South Africa slip to sixth in Test rankings, Pakistan rise to third

South Africa have dropped to No. 6 in the Test rankings, while Pakistan have climbed to third place, in the annual update released by the ICC on Tuesday. Australia have taken a six-point lead over second-placed India, while Pakistan trail India by only one point.

England and New Zealand benefited from South Africa's drop, moving to fourth and fifth respectively. West Indies retained their eighth-place ranking but lead Bangladesh by only eight points.

South Africa and West Indies lost the most points in the update, 17 and 11 respectively. The calculation process dropped results from 2012-13, while outcomes from 2014-15 were weighted at 50%. Only the latest results had 100% weightage. As a result, South Africa's series victories over England, Australia, New Zealand and Pakistan in 2012-13 were not factored in. They lost series to India and England and drew with Bangladesh in the 2015-16 season. West Indies had beaten New Zealand, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in 2012-13 but lost to Australia and Sri Lanka in 2015-16.

The update favoured Pakistan, because their 2-0 loss to Sri Lanka in August 2014 was weighted at 50%. In terms of points gained, Bangladesh made the most progress, getting ten points, followed by Australia, who gained six.

Zimbabwe, ranked No. 10, have 12 points but were not included in the rankings table released by the ICC on Tuesday because they had not completed the required eight Tests in the new rating period. The ICC said Zimbabwe will be added to the table once they play two more Tests.

The end of the Kallis-Smith-Boucher era hitting the points tally. Also, the relatively few tests SA is playing nowadays isn't helping.

I don't agree. CSA nearly hit their target anyway and thus I don't foresee issues going forward IMO
 
Standard Bank inks Proteas deal

I guess we will have to get used to hearing "Standard Bank Proteas" from now on. Not a fan of naming rights for national teams, but hey, more money is always welcomed...

STANDARD BANK confirmed their association with Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Wednesday in a deal that will see them become the headline sponsor of the Proteas in all three formats of the game.

The Standard Bank Proteas were officially unveiled in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

Standard Bank will be the official sponsor of the Proteas for the next four years across all three formats of the game, enjoying the exclusive rights associated with the National Team.

“We could not have wished for a better 25-year anniversary gift than for Standard Bank to confirm their sponsorship of cricket,” said CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat.

“Standard Bank is one of the largest financial institutions in South Africa and operates around the world. We are naturally thrilled to welcome yet another world-class corporate to our delightful family of commercial partners.

“We are confident that our partnership with Standard Bank will grow and deliver rewards for both parties. We are already excited by some of the initiatives planned by Standard Bank to leverage this partnership.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank South African Breweries and Blue Label Telecoms for their unwavering support of the Proteas over the years. I now look forward to continue our relationship with both partners in other areas within our commercial programme,” concluded Mr. Lorgat.

“We are delighted to be partnering with Cricket South Africa and look forward to our four-year association with the Proteas. South Africans are passionate about cricket and we share this passion.

Cricket brings together people from all walks of life. It builds national pride and unites us as a nation,” said Ben Kruger, Standard Bank Group Chief Executive.

The Standard Bank Proteas will be seen in action for the first time when they play a triangular limited overs series in the Caribbean against the West Indies and Australia next month.

This will be followed by the two-match home Test Series against New Zealand in August.

^^, better than the rugby side...I heard they still haven't got a main sponsor and the first test of the season is imminent. Embarrassing or what?
 
So we've come full circle if I recall standard bank were heavily involved with sponsorship before that CSA scandal a few years back?

They used to be the ODI sponsor before the scandal. They actually withdrew from all sport sponsorships at the time. Interesting that they have changed their mind.

As in Hansie Cronje? Interesting that they're in just after the nonsense with Bodi, Thami, et al.
 
Saw somewhere its worth R300m over four years. If true, that's R75m a year, a nice shot in the arm. Not to mention they retained all the other sponsors in some shape or form
