Yeah, it's politics. The hundreds of thousands of dollars has absolutely nothing to do with it...

Its both tbh. The money is very tempting and the political interference pushes guys over the edge. Without the political interference I believe they would go 20/20 later in their careers now they will go much sooner. Or more will chose to go and qualify for england/aus and nz.

I will accept politics driving some to qualify for other countries, but saying pushing them to 20/20 is a stretch. If you were to list SA pro cricketers that are sole 20/20 players, you would struggle to find one that never played for the Proteas or was dropped in for a player of colour who performed worse.

You can maybe question ramela ahead of theunis de bruyn but both had below averages seasons last year and ramela had a better indian tour then de bruyn. Don't think there is anyone in domestic cricket that anyone can say its being overlooked unfairly here.
 
Very poor game with the bat IMO. Cook and Bavuma being the most worrying for me. Elgar was okay, maybe should have kicked on. Same could be said about van Zyl, but that would be unfair.

On the bowling side, would have hoped to see Philander pick up more wickets. Good all round contribution from Phehlukwayo and should get him another game. Would love to hear more feedback on the pink ball other than what Philander has said
 
De Villiers, Morkel ruled out of New Zealand Tests

AB de Villiers and Morne Morkel have been ruled out of South Africa's upcoming two-Test series against New Zealand with injury. Faf du Plessis will stand in as captain. Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander's return to fitness and Wayne Parnell's first Test call-up since the Australia series in 2014 will ensure South Africa's pace pack has several options including Kagiso Rabada, Chris Morris and Kyle Abbott.

For du Plessis, the elevation to captaincy is also a recall of sorts. He was dropped from the Test XI for South Africa's last Test, against England in January but will now automatically have his place back. It also means de Villiers will not play in his first series since being made permanent Test captain after the England series, following a period of uncertainty about his commitment to the national team.

De Villiers spent significant amounts of last summer discussing the need to manage his workload but towards the end, gave South Africans an assurance that he would not miss any international cricket but an elbow injury sustained during the CPL will rule him out of action for between six and eight weeks. "I'm naturally disappointed to miss the Test series against New Zealand, particularly because I have not missed a Test match through injury since my debut in 2004," de Villiers said. "However, with an exciting summer of cricket ahead, it is obviously sensible to allow my elbow time to heal properly."

Morkel, who also played in the CPL, has a bulging disk in his back and will be sidelined for four to six weeks. South Africa are hopeful of having both players fit for the start of the home ODI series against Australia in October.

Betting he plays through the "pain" if it was an ipl next on his schedule. Also its ridiculous faf being named captain, he was dropped for the previous test. How does he go from dropped to captain?

Really worrying that Cook and Bavuma had a bad SA A couple of games. Of our top run scorers over the two games, two are all rounders in the middle order and Elgar being the sole top order contributer.

A few half centuries and none converted is also worrying. The bowling though was worse IMO. Olivier and Phehlukwayo chipping in but the disappointment being Philander. At least he didn't go for much in the way of runs
 
Very disappointing. Really expected more from the team we send..Very worrying signs with the NZ tests coming shortly.

South Africa slip to seventh in rankings

Australia have conceded the No. 1 Test ranking to India after losing all three Tests on their tour of Sri Lanka. Virat Kohli's team - currently ahead of Pakistan by one point - must win the fourth Test against West Indies, beginning on August 18 in Trinidad, to retain their top ranking.

Australia slipped to No. 3 after the 163-run defeat at the SSC; they had begun the series with 118 points but finished the contest just ahead of England, who also have 108 points at No. 4, on the ICC's rankings.

As a result of Australia being whitewashed 3-0, Pakistan have risen to No. 2, having drawn their four-Test tour of England 2-2. Should India fail to beat West Indies in Trinidad, Pakistan will become the No. 1 ranked Test side for the first time.

Sri Lanka's performance led to them over-taking South Africa to move into sixth place with 95 points. They had begun the home series against Australia at No. 7 with 85 points.

nothing could have been done to prevent that slip to seventh by us. that fate was sealed when we left for India.
they could have performed better against England, but we cannot take anything away from England, in the test series they simply outplayed us.

I am looking forward to this test series. sure we are missing AB, but we have Stein fit and well rested, who can now be on the field to give KG some tips and guidance.
this will be an important Series for KG, a lot of opportunity to learn.

I do think it is strange that faf has been made captain, but unfortunately he is our T20 capitain (and a good one at that) so he should be next in line to be test captain.

with regards to JP possibly playing, I would not be surprised, he has a lot of potential and I am a fan, he might just have a good performance and make up for the poor performances.

the only other person who MIGHT be able to captain the test squad is Cook, he has all the experience coming up and playing for so long, not leaving for England shows his dedication to the country. if only he gets a few more games in the official squad he may even get to be captain in a season or so.


over all, we have a decent team, a nice mix of youth and experience.
