Proton cars to make return to South Africa later this year

Malaysian carmaker Proton makes a return to South Africa by entering into an agreement with Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) to be a distributor for its vehicles locally.

The deal will see the first shipment of fully imported models go on sale in September, with the Proton X50 and X70 currently confirmed for sale from later this year. The Proton Saga is also expected to be made available for sale in the country at a later date.

In 2015, Proton announced that it would halt sales in South Africa, citing deteriorating market conditions. At the time it said that the brand would remain active in the country, with after-sales support continuing for as long as there is demand.

“We are exploiting the strength of our new products, our brand and even the links Malaysia has with other countries to establish a foothold in many new markets,” said Proton international sales director Steven Xu.

“Our new model range offers advanced features that are on par with many competitors from other brands and in many of our markets, the X50 and Proton X70 sit near the top of their class in terms of specifications yet are sold at prices equivalent to or less than their direct rivals,” he said.

It’s Official: Proton is Coming Back to South Africa

Remember Proton? Well, the Malaysian automaker has confirmed it will return to South Africa later in 2022 after a decade-long hiatus. Here’s which models are coming first…

Proton is set to return to South Africa in September 2022, with the Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) Group having been appointed as the Malaysian brand’s local distributor.

Sales of Proton vehicles – over the years, the range included the Saga, Savvy, Satria Neo, Gen2, Persona and Arena bakkie – ceased in South Africa in 2012. But the company is heading back to local shores and says it’s “bullish about its sales prospects in South Africa”.

Having signed an agreement to appoint the CMH Group as its distributor in SA, Proton sales will recommence with the X50 and X70 in September, according to the company’s press site. The Saga saloon will follow thereafter.

The X50 is a subcompact crossover based on the Geely Binyue (Chinese firm Geely Holdings purchased a majority stake in Proton back in 2017). The X70, meanwhile, is positioned one segment higher, and is closely related to the Geely Boyue. Finally, the latest version of the Saga takes the form of a budget sedan. Engine options, specifications and local pricing will be revealed closer to the brand’s official relaunch.

Proton X50 and X70 coming in September – What to expect

Proton announced it is re-entering South Africa in September of this year through a partnership with Combined Motor Holdings (CMH) Group, seven years after exiting the local market.

The manufacturer said it will launch the X50 and X70 SUVs first, followed by the Saga sedan.

The X70 is Proton’s most premium vehicle and the newest generation was released in February 2020. The X50, on the other hand, is an entirely new compact SUV that debuted in October 2020 and was built in partnership with Geely.

With South Africa added to its roster, Proton will export its products to 14 overseas markets at the end of 2022.

Proton said its vehicles are “near the top of their class in terms of specifications yet are sold at prices equivalent to or less than their direct rivals.”

Proton is returning to South Africa - first details and starting price announced

Malaysian carmaker Proton is making a South African comeback, and the first vehicles are expected to hit showrooms in September.

Following the announcement by its parent company back in April that the brand would be returning to South Africa, the local importer has announced the first details of the relaunch.

Proton cars will be distributed by Combined Motor Holdings, which plans to open 25 dealerships for the brand in September.

The first products to be offered locally will be the new X50 and X70 crossover models, and pricing will start at the R450 000 mark, CMH said, although full pricing and specifications will only be announced nearer to launch.

Much has changed since Proton exited the South African market back in 2015. The Malaysian brand is now owned by Geely, which also has Volvo under its wings, and the new X50 and X70 SUVs are based on Geely products from China.

The X50 measures 4.3 metres in length, making it similar in size to the Hyundai Creta and Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, while the 4.51 metre X70 is closer in size to the Volkswagen Tiguan and Mazda CX-5.

In Malaysia the X50 is powered exclusively by a 1.5-litre three-cylinder turbopetrol engine, good for 110kW and 226Nm, and paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The larger Proton X70 gets a a more powerful version of the 1.5 turbo-triple, with 130kW and 255Nm on tap.

We reported earlier this year that the Malaysian carmaker was making a return to South Africa with an arsenal of new products and CMH Group would be handling the dealerships and distribution.

As a reminder, the Malaysian brand is owned by Chinese carmaker Geely since 2017. Geely also owns Volvo, Polestar and Lotus, and has a stake in Mercedes-Benz.

Now a report from BusinessTech has confirmed some details and pricing of the Proton products that will be going on sale in SA from September. We understand that CMH will have 25 Proton dealerships and the first batch of cars have already arrived in SA.

So, what can South African motorists expect? There’ll be two SUV models; the Proton X50 and the Proton X70. All are powered by a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. There are multiple states of tune, with 110 kW / 226 Nm and 130 kW / 255 Nm. We suspect this motor is similar to the one found in the XC40 T3.

Here’s what you’ll pay for the Proton X50 and X70 when they arrive in South Africa

Malaysian automotive brand Proton is returning to South Africa soon and local importer CMH has released full pricing for the first two models.

The Proton X50 is roughly the size of a Hyundai Creta and will cost between R449 900 and R579 900, while the larger X70, with dimensions comparable to a Tiguan, will set you back between R529 900 and R639 900.

The importer says the vehicles will be available for test drives from 15 August 2022, before going on sale officially in September.

All Proton X50 and X70 models are powered by 1.5-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engines, albeit in different configurations depending on the model chosen.

The version in the X50 Standard, Luxury and Executive models, for instance, produces 110kW and 226Nm and has a conventional multi-point injection system. There’s also a direct injection version that produces 130kW and 225kW, and you’ll find this beneath the bonnet of the range-topping X50 Premium model as well as all X70 derivatives.

All models ship with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, driving the front wheels in all X50 and most X70 variants, and only the mid-spec X70 Executive model is available with all-wheel drive.
