The Proton Cars Thread

Yeah, Ciro aka Cairo give it a solid review. Good car (the newer X50),well built & good underpinnings but it is a fair chunk of dough more than the other Chinese okes.

They are re-entering the market & need to actually make a splash with half decent pricing. They are pricing it way out of the market.

Verdict

The Proton X70 makes a good case for itself, particularly if you’re looking for a family car that delivers ride quality and occupant comfort in abundance. The model’s turbopetrol engine is not lethargic (as some entry-level medium SUVs’ motors are) – it’s responsive and punchy (if somewhat thirsty) and mated with a snappy transmission. While we’ve only sampled the bottom-of-the-range version, its standard spec list is quite long and besides, if you want additional features, other X70 derivatives feature more comfort, features and safety tech.

Should you buy one? Given how rapidly the segment has evolved in a short space of time, we can’t recommend a Proton X70 over the brand-new and excellent Kia Sportage or the highly lauded Haval H6, both of which offer more space and performance for a similar price.

Proton SA has confirmed that there’s a new model coming in early 2023, but did not divulge further details. It could potentially be a fresh iteration of the X70, or something entirely different…

Compared to the haval/cherry/baic looks the most dated. Pricing seems comparably high as well. Will still get a Corolla cross above any of these though. Astonishing value for money especially lower in the range.

1000 Units up for Proton, Confirms Saga for 2023

Malaysian brand Proton has confirmed that 1000 units of its vehicles have been imported into SA so far, with confirmation that the Saga sedan will be joining the local line up.

After just two months of retail operations, Proton says that its X50 and X70 SUV range have proven popular. So far, 1000 units of both models have reached our shores, and the family will soon be joined by a 3rd model in 2023.

We’ve had a taste of both the X50 and X70, and have been satisfied with what they bring to the market. As far as sales are concerned, well we can’t confirm numbers, but its interesting to note that a fair few of the smaller X50 have been snapped up by the rental market.

“The quick take up of our vehicles in South Africa is proof of the appeal of both Proton as a brand, and of our model range to car buyers there. We have a strong working relationship with CMH Group, and they have initiated many on-ground activities to give a taste of our current range to as many South Africans as possible,” said Steven Xu, Director of International Sales, Proton.

The Proton Saga will touch down, bringing an affordable sedan to market. At this stage, there are no indications of price, but given the likes of the Kia Pegas, Honda Amaze and Volkswagen Polo, we’re expecting it to come in around the R275 000 mark.

In Malaysia, the Proton Saga is available with a 1.3-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine developing 70 kW and 120 Nm, with the option of either a manual gearbox or automatic transmission.

Imagine a company already ditched their client base. Come back and hope to get support again...

Never owned a Proton, never will.

I don't think they had any client base to begin with, it was supposed to be new beginnings with a well priced product suited for our market, but they messed up again.
