The RC Car hobby thread

If anyone is interested @deadendfingerboards possibly.
HSP Brushed Brontosaurus, with extra 3300mah battery and balanced charger - R1800 all it requires is a bearing in the rear diff which I've been meaning to fix for the last 3 months but eh.
There is also a little JYRC 9112 for R300 that needs a new battery if anyone wants it?

Hey Lupus

I'm keen on the little monster truck. Does it have proportional steering and acceleration? If the bronto was brushless I'd be interested. But please let me know about the little 1:12th. I'm super keen.

I've just seen the 1:12th on Google. I will definitely buy it!! Please inbox me your details...

Yup I'm in Roodepoort as well and there were a few places to go ride, but it was generally another buddy and myself. With all the townhouse complexes popping up it's becoming less and less. Also he's moved 20 minutes away so chances of going and riding as much is slim, I've also started fiddling with PC's again which I find more relaxing.

Hello,

I bought a RC - petrol car a few years ago. I was stupid enough to just buy without testing.

This thing has not running properly since I had.

It is one of those book build thingies.

Is there anybody in the East Rand that can have a look at this thing and get it up and running for me?

I only know of places in the North sorry :-(

If you're ever on the west rand bring it to me and I'll help you get it going...

We investigate the remarkable sport of radio-controlled racing

The cars may be small but their performance is remarkable. We investigate the sport of radio-controlled racing...

I am standing with a controller in my hand connected to a 1:10-scale racer on the track below. This can only end badly…

To preserve the expensive toy from a rookie mistake, Francois Laubscher, the car’s owner and member of Parow Radio Control Car Club (PRCCC), has dialled down the responses to about 25 percent. Even so, the little racecar responds instantly as if there is a miniature version of myself behind the wheel. I lap the circuit at a snail’s pace compared to the professionals, but it is clear: this is real racing.

I have a few HSP Brontosaurus's. Basically one for myself and 2 more for the kids.

My son was driving his and something broke. I told him to use mine while I look at what is wrong with his.

During this time I have no clue what he was doing but this resulted in my motor being fried.

I replaced the motor with a COBALT2 10X2 (TRI10111)
To make an understatement: This motor is slightly overpowered for the vehicle

First run I was amazed of the speed but then it came to a grinding halt.
The connector to the battery melted. (NiMH 5000, Tamiya connector)
Thought it was something else.
I cut off the connector and put a new one on and new battery.
Melted again.

The standard ESC that comes with the Bronto is not that great thus I swapped that out for the a Hobbywing 860 and changed the battery to LiPo. Now the cables don't melt any more but the chassis still got extremely hot just under the motor. Replaced the standard heatsink with a fanned one.

You cant go full throttle from standing start, the car just flips.

Just to get it working properly cost basically the same as new one but I probably have the fastest Bronto now.

Nice! Mine also gets pretty hot after about 5 minutes. But I've never had wires melt. You should get the aluminium chassis. It will help with the heat. Or drill some holes in the chassis under the motor to allow some airflow to cool the motor can. Or upgrade to a brushless system.
But ja, these cars aren't really for going super fast unless you want to replace parts every Monday morning after a weekend of bashing. But they're awesome for short courses with some jumps. But I do find that after 5 minutes of bashing I have to let her cool down for 10 to 15 minutes. In a few weeks from now I'm probably gonna upgrade to a brushless system. 1800kv motor.
Where your from?
Also don't waste your time on nimh. Lipo is much better!

Oh ja, one more thing. Throw those tamiya connectors away asap. Rather use deans connectors AKA T-connectors. They're made from heat resistant nylon and last forever. Every time I get a new car thats the first thing I change!!

And @Lupus lupus I'm still enjoying both cars I bought from you!!! The little 1:12 truggy is a beast on 3s lipo!! Lol. Haven't even fried the motor yet!! If you find any more cars you wanna sell please let me be the first to know.
