They get their vote and they sometimes get a small opportunity to talk shít. That's what happens in parliament. Lots of shìt talking and some voting on stuff.

Same as the DA who doesn't have enough votes yet to do anything real.

Thats why fearmongering of ANC and EFF together is BS. They are at their most dangerous right now. They have a super majority together and can just throw out the constitution and do whatever they want.

Be the best MP I can be for those who voted for me.

You do realise that people don't necessarily want to vote for parties? In many wards across the country, independents came close or did take wards off their incumbents? There is a demand for this...

We need to modernise our political systems, and that would include allowing independents to run. (preferably in constituency format, hopefully, will be implemented post-2024).

My point is that 1 seat in Parliament is a waste of time. Do you even have to show up to receive your MP salary and perks?

It ain't. If that person wants to go to Parliament to serve their country (ideally), why can't they? Why must they be part of a party to do so? That's exactly the way of thinking that the ConCourt found unconstitutional in the Electoral Act.

The nice thing is, the people who voted that oke in, can hold them directly accountable. And don't have to hope that the party the oke would belong to would take action, even tho they might not ever (ref. ANC).

P.S The current system we have should've been replaced by 2004. It was meant to be temporary. But as usual, ANC did nothing... (Refer to Van Zyl Slabbert's report and the recent majority opinion from the committee).

Let's say the oke campaigns on an anti-ANC ticket and the needs of their constituency.

Oke doesn't and becomes ANC buddy, and practically abandons his constituency. And supports things the constituency doesn't. Then they could just simply pressure him to **** off...

Ok, so lets say he doesn't abandon them and his 1 seat is like an island, and he speaks for his 1 minute but everyone ignores him. Did he do his job well and his 1000 voters are happy?

How would they do that practically? If you belong to a party they recall you, who recalls you if you are an independent? Once you are in parliament the voters can't touch you, what happens if you just tell whoever thinks they are the Boss of you to F off?

After 5 years they get told to fsck off at the ballot papers.

We have a long way to go to get to that point, but it is where the population have their "power"... if people start doing stupid shyte that is against their constituency they will only have a shelf life of 5 years.

I don't know about you but 5 years sounds really good on an MP salary, plus there is a chance that the party you were scheming with can hook you up with something, also the influence you can buy yourself in 5 years can really set you up nicely.

Oh it is good as an MP salary, and for many people 5 years is enough time to setup schemes, which is why I say we have a long way to mature on this front....

"The minister can't do anything because he has no powers. Gwede and Pravin are fighting to hold onto their portfolios, so you have an electricity minister, who has to solve the load shedding crisis, but with no powers given to him," the NEC member said.
