I don't think so, the councils are allowed to elect the leadership within a stipulated time, on the premise that they will be able to look past narrow interests, after that Cogta can still intervene at their leisure call for an election.

With our experience so far it's clear that hung municipalities are more likely toe disfunctional, so movingatonceyoan election after the election is not a bad idea, but there is still a chance that we could come out of the rerun with the same problem again, so losing the executive mayoral system when everything fail should still be an option to get things to work.
Surely it falling within Cogta is a conflict of interest. Would be better if the mandate sits with the electoral court. Citizens should be able to approach the electoral court as they would any other court, presenting evidence of instability, who can then rule on a re-run.

The GP cities must now wait for 5 years while Cogta does nothing...

Only if a government can't be formed within a set period. Doesn't help the instability of endless MONCs and dirty dealing however.
Which is what should have happened when EFF voted for DA mayor. DA should decline, hang the council and start elections again.

The reasonable explanation will be, "but we did not ask them to vote for us".

Both the DA and ANC are dping tge same thing over and over again hoping for a different outcome, both still think they can find a workable solution that involves the EFF.

I think we need to go back to the times when we had a mayor of Sandton and another mayor of Soweto, reducing the size of the muni makes it easier for people living in the same area to agree on stuff instead of this "centralised" bullcrap.

Can't wait for when DA wins GP in next years Provincial elections.

I listened to commissar Snuki talking about this. He keeps, without irony, describing the ANC's biggest with the DA being that they are racist and opposed to "transformation". That's a total copout coming from the ANC who are probably at this stage the biggest race mongers in this country.

Their problem with the EFF is apparently that they are lawless, the EFF brand of racism is apparently acceptable to the ANC which makes sense as they mirror each other.
Seconded. I was surprised there were those in the ANC willing to work with DA at all...

What do you prefer should happen to disfunctional municipalities like Tshwane and Mangaung? get used to the fact that now and again things would come to a standstill while politicians are busy wrangling not able to elect leadership?
Basically what @R13... says:
Dissolve and re-run elections.

That's a good idea.

I think currently there's a court case on to have Enoch Mgjima dissolved.

Hopefully, the applicants win.

I.e. you want big muni's to be redrawn into smaller muni's?

Maybe, it could work but the problems will still persist.

What positions did DA give them?

Nothing as far as the news reports are concerned. Maybe they get first dibs in certain wards in the next municipal elections, which are far away. Certainly they can't be slotted in as an MPL as those slots are already taken by DA members since the 2019 elections.

Oh? But I thought PA was finally going kill arrogant, racist DA?

"On Friday, we welcomed former ward councillors from the Good party in George. Today (Sunday) in Saldanha Bay, we welcomed eight former members and councillors of other parties, including former Patriotic Alliance (PA) members Alderman Sammy Claassen and Bumper Morgan, to the DA," Simmers added.
It seems like George and Saldanha will have by-elections then, possibly leading DA to regain majority govs in George and Saldanha.

It also seems that there's an exodus from GOOD and PA in WC to DA. This isn't the first time it's happened recently...

They'll probably stand for DA in coming by-elections.

The attempt by @JuliusSeizure here is to essentially try and accuse DA of handing out civil service spots to converts like PA did in BW.

It will also work well for those who have an interest in keeping the National Party's spatial planning practices in effect where poor people have their own municipalities and no one bothers anyone, Soweto will stand there, Khayelitsha and neighbouring townships will be there not bothering Joburg and Cape Town people.

The whole point of merging municipal areas was to address that very same problem, some areas were condemned for hardship by design so that others can enjoy life. There is also a good reason black people were settled far away from the likes of Sandton and other larney places, now if you reduce the size you play right into the handbook of the National Party.
