My problem with the post is that it seems the Mayor, Mashaba at the time is the one who made the appointment, that on its own becomes a problem and opens the person to political manipulation, because what exactly is he, an employee of the city or a political deployment?

My view is that the Municipal Manager, who is appointed by council, should be the Boss of the municipality and a fully empowered accounting officer who is in charge of everything as far as the operations of the city are concerned, split loyalties where some employees like the GFIS guy feeling indebted to the politicians should be avoided.

If its angled towards the CI stuff, then I very much the DA would back it..

But also for me, this idea of "West Capetonians" has all sorts of problem, the area is not a homogenous people at all.

Without a doubt its complicated in the extreme, but an investigative unit for the municipality should not be beholden to the operational side of the municipality.

Idealy it would be external to the municipality as a whole and answer to someone else entirely.

There is something not right with the mayor interfering with the decisions of the city manager on operational matters.

Is the head of the GFIS a political deployee or a municipal employee? You don't even need to go far into the matter, as soon as there is a conflict as far as the powers of who can do what, when and where, there is a problem.

The Municipal Manager must the the Boss of the municipality, as it says in the name, if the mayor or anyone has a problem with his decisions those should be properly investigated in council and a decision taken to remove the municipal manager, not the Mayor second guessing the decisions of the Municipal Manager, what then is the point of having him/her in the position.

Yup, it is multicultural, the thing that does make WC different to the others IMO is political history and culture.
First, a British colony, then initially backing the UP against NP, then switched to NP during the old regime, and then rejected ANC from 1994 to the present day, being the first province to have coalitions in local government and provincial government post-94, then backing DA (the national OO) from 2009 to present day.

DA has withdrawn from the JHB by-election. (If true, they probably couldn't do anything to get a replacement. So they chose to opt-out and back ASA in the ward).

Let's see what ASA does there this week.

I think it's more complex than them withdrawing by choice.. I think their listed candidate pulled out at the last minute and it was too late to nominate a new one.

Yeah, I know it's a whole thing. Rumour has it that the DA candidate met up with Gayton and then withdrew from the by-election on Youth Day when the candidate nominations closed/already closed.

Then DA said they'll contact IEC about how this can be resolved.

Going by the DA withdrawal, it seems the IEC couldn't do anything for DA... Hence, the withdrawal.

JUST IN | Government misses court deadline to answer DA on Putin arrest obligations, asks for more time

Hours before the SA government was due to answer the Democratic Alliance’s case that it has a legal obligation to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if and when he arrives in South Africa, it asked for another three days to give that answer.

The state had previously agreed that it would file its response to the DA’s application by Friday afternoon.

The opposition party’s lawyers are not happy with government’s latest failure to respond to the Putin arrest case, which they say is the third time the state has not met a deadline to do so.

State Attorney representative Joseph Sebelemetsa indicated that President Cyril Ramaphosa “is engaged in various international commitments which require travel abroad” and “requires more time to engage with and respond to the DA’s application”.

National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces Amos Masondo, have formally requested an urgent meeting with Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
Zondo on Thursday said if state capture were to reoccur, Parliament wouldn’t be able to stop it.
Parliament expressed its shock and objection to this statement on Thursday, and said on Friday their requested meeting is “is to clarify any potential misunderstandings and to establish a common understanding of the respective roles and responsibilities of each arm of government within the context of Parliament's implementation of the commission's recommendations.”.

Don't worry we will have The Champ and Julius telling us about the collapse of the vote in ward 7 but luckily we will be reminding them of the unique circumstances of this particular by-election. I am paying zero attention to the DA vote share for this ward next week.

Basically impossible with the PA on the ballot. Was won by the DA in 2011 and 2016 with just over 50 percent of the vote, but the poisonous PA took away votes from the DA in 2021, allowing the ANC to win the ward with only 37% of the vote.

But what would happen in that case tho? Is the election invalidated? Does the DA get the seat? Does DA have to pick who to give their votes to? Or are the DA votes disqualified?
