The SA Politics Thread Part 3

From the book on the July 2021 riots in Durban, it looks like even Zille was taken aback by uBaba's charm. She also said uBaba reached out to her when she was going through a hard time.

‘If I had his phone number now (and if I knew he has a phone in his cell), I would reach out to him too, and wish him strength and courage, as he did to me at my lowest ebb. Not because I think he has been wronged. He was accorded due process of law and must serve his sentence. But because I know Zuma, the person, not the politician,’ Zille wrote in a controversial column
That's so sweet.

I don't have access to full article but most corrupt people often seem charming. Similar to how priests & pastors are charming while doing their deeds with the boys.

HZ definitely lost her grip in recent times. I am sure Thabo Bester will reach out to her as well, if it helps his cause.

Talking about that scammer...

Some people are pleasant in real life and in interaction but become vile creatures the moment money comes into play. I suspect uBaba is like that.

True, everybody blames guptas (like everybody blames that Goolam[?] guy for Hansie cronje) but it takes a special treasonous guy to sell out one's own people.

Kudos to her on admitting stupidity. Takes guts to admit it publicly which she definitely has.
Nothing annoys me like people who become zombies while on the phone, I've been in the same situation her husband was in when you can hear someone is being scammed but they flatly ignore you when you try to intervene and continue with the ill fated call.

I actually think uBaba isn't that phased by money... his "vice" is power and influence.

Something seems off about this "council" decision to me.

Ignoring the DA bad/ANC bad/whatever aspects.. handing that sort of power to the City Manager seems odd and problematic.
I agree.

He claimed the previous administration, led by the DA, had abused the department by using it to harass officials.
This seems like the same type of argument used to justify the disbandment of the Scorpions...

So there are two things I want to touch on here:
  • So going by what the bill is proposing, would this be the groundwork to get the WC recognized as an autonomous region, independence or something like that?
  • Would the DA support this bill?

I agree.

Yeah it does have similar traits, and on balance of probability and all that, I'd assume GFIS were making life a bit hot for a few unscrupulous individuals and taps were being closed.

The way I'm reading it, is that its an attempted end-run around the national government to try and bring more control to the province.

I think if it was modeled in a more federal type setup, the DA would get behind it.

Yeah, if it was simply plain federalism/devolution DA would definitely back it.

But this has CI undertones to it, so I'm not sure DA would back it.
