Must he speak all 11 languages while addressing a crowd? English works well for most people.

He never did any in Isizulu (the main language of his hometown) when he is from KZN and doing stuff in Isizulu would have made him look very good in terms of boosting relations with IFP (a potential very important coalition partner for DA). It would have also boosted his image in KZN and nationally as Zulu's are after all the biggest ethnic group in KZN.

I get your point about learning isiZulu but since he managed not to go past matric which every domestic we ever had managed to achieve, he is not exactly studious guy. Also some people just don't have the inclination to learn language.

Everyone has the inclination. It comes down to effort and will.

He says he did not have "funds" to complete his degree but attended a school which is actually more expensive than most University courses (almost R60k) and I assume he did not board at school since he is from that area and would have required more funds.

When it comes to Afrikaans and JS doing the ads in Afrikaans, many here will understand the power of speaking in mother tongue but any other SA language "English works well for most people".

I am happy to be addressed in English even if it is not my mother tongue. I am pretty sure most electorate won't mind. He might be able to endear himself to a small section if he speaks different languages but then he has a target of 20% set by HZ and he does not sound ambitious.

I don't judge him by formal education as he is very articulate and that is enough for a politician. Lack of funds is silly & dishonest reason - all the domestic workers we ever had were matric and above. Did he earn 4500 rands per month like them ?

That's nonsense. This is a silly argument in the first place.

He made no particular effort with afrikaans. He probably learned it as a kid because he had to and can as a result use it when convenient.

This is just normal for most/all South Africans. Except that there is a lot of overlap in African languages so some people get a few languages extra for free.

Maybe he should have made an effort if he's ambition was to run a rural kzn town. That is obviously not the case.

Your domestic has a higher education. Well that just proves how useless that is. Why should anyone do a university degree to become a cleaner?

My feeling is that it has never mattered to him, and to be honest there is nothing in the current direction the party is taking that compels him to learn Zulu or any other language besides Afrikaans. The DA has all but surrendered growth in KZN and will hope the IFP picks up the slack there, English is good enough for the Indian and other middle class communities, so whatever they get there will be fine.

Their focus is firstly on their own core voters and the part that keeps on going back to the Freedom Front, they want them back, hence the need that appeal largely to the Afrikaans community like the language thing and farm murders.

Zille's idea is that they keep what they have now, get 1 or 2 % back from the Freedom Front, hope for the best on everyone else, it will be another improvement on Maimane's 2019 result, with a low turnout it's possible, no one can accuse them of weakening the party. A risky strategy but at this moment both John and Zille are pretty much untouchable so it doesn't matter if it fails.

We should arrive at a point where it's okay for someone to confidently say, "I just did not feel like school and chose to do other things", instead of being compelled to give silly reasons, the stigma must come to an end.

You said it yourself, Zulu's vote for Zulus, when the ANC has another Zulu, ANC will be back in KZN, JS is not Zulu so why should he bother? Maybe the DA needs a white Zulu like a Johnny Clegg?
