Mandela was not power hungry and he was in his late 70s when he gave up power.

If anything, he was a good example to politicians the world over to not be greedy. He did the right thing by retiring after that.

Absolutely no question that Student politics is where aspiring politicians and such cut their teeth... but it would be horribly wrong to think that the majority of students actually care about it, hell when I was at varsity most of the people vying for SRC positions were told to fsck off when they started trying to campaign in one of the "rest" spots on campus as they were just being a bloody nuisance.

It's not as much of a joke as it used to be where it was just a vehicle for some students to gain resources to free **** at varsity. SRC members live the good life on campus at other student's expense. Now, it has become a bit of a proxy (in addition to the above) for how the politics of the wider party progress. The EFF are some of the reason for that, when they started replacing the ANC allied student bodies higher ups in the parties started to notice and campaigns became a lot more spirited.

Yes, but he should have stayed on another term for stability reasons. He knew even then that the "talent" wasn't promising. Look what came after.

Sounds very much like present SA national politics; certainly as regards the ANC and EFF, maybe PA!

Its not as easy as cut out. They get privileges but with it comes a lot of social media hate. When I was at Uni, we had a couple of resignations every year and because many egos are involved, there is usually infighting within the SRC especially when some want to prove who is "the better leader".

I have heard his relationship with Mbeki was not exactly good. It would be interesting if more revision could be done on those days.
