Hybrid vehicle sales continue to surge in South Africa

South Africans are slowly warming to so-called New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) with traditional hybrids leading the way.

This is according to a Lightstone Auto sales analysis for the first quarter of 2023, which showed that NEV sales in South Africa grew by 19% compared to the same period in 2022.

NEVs, which include traditional hybrids, as well as plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and fully-electric vehicles (EVs), accounted for 1 664 sales in the first three months of this year.

However, traditional hybrids accounted for 85% of that sub-segment, while EVs took a 14% share and PHEV sales amounted to just 2%.

Hybrid vehicle sales grew by an astounding 546% in the full year of 2022, versus the previous year, with a total volume of 4 050 units.

In May 2023, South Africa’s new-vehicle industry registered encouraging year-on-year growth of 10.1% to finish on 43 060 units, ending 2 consecutive months of market decline. That industry tally furthermore represented a month-on-month improvement of 16%, with April 2023’s effort having come in at 37 107 units.

The light-commercial vehicle (LCV) segment appeared to do much of the heavy lifting, with sales in that part of the market increasing a substantial 38.5% year on year to 12 825 units, according to figures released by Naamsa. In contrast, the new passenger-vehicle market came in at 27 401 units, registering a marginal increase of 0.1% compared with May 2022’s figure.

Out of the total reported industry sales of 43 060 vehicles, Naamsa estimated 38 872 units (or 90.2%) represented sales via the dealer channel, with 4.9% coming courtesy of the vehicle-rental industry, 2.7% from industry corporate fleets and 2.2% via government purchases.

South Africa’s new-vehicle industry registered 10.1% of year-on-year growth in May 2023, finishing the month on 43 060 units. The light-commercial vehicle (LCV) segment provided much of this momentum, with sales in that sector of the market increasing a significant 38.5% year on year to 12 825 units.

Question is, after being relegated to an unfamiliar 2nd place in April 2023, did the Toyota Hilux manage to regain the top spot on the list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies in May 2023? It did indeed, with the popular Prospecton-produced pick-up racking up 2 798 registrations across the country.

SA bakkie sales surged in May: These were the best and worst sellers

Despite the widespread economic doom and gloom caused by load shedding and repeated interest rate increases, South Africa’s bakkie market showed some strong growth in May 2023.

While the passenger car market grew by just 0.1% compared to the same month last year, the light commercial sector enjoyed a significant year-on-year gain of 38.5%.

However, there is a bit of context to take into account here as this time last year Toyota Hilux sales practically halved after the devastating factory flood of April.

The other side of the coin is increased demand for the new Ford Ranger, which managed a solid sales performance of 2 104 units in May 2023. To crown another strong sales month, on June 1 it became the first bakkie to win the South African Car of the Year competition.

Last month saw South African new vehicle sales increase by a healthy 10.1% compared to May 2022, but this was led by surging bakkie sales.

While the light commercial market was perhaps skewed by a few unusual factors (read more on that and see the top sellers here) the completely flat performance of the passenger vehicle market was perhaps a symptom of a weak economy that’s struggling with a perfect storm of negative factors.

Passenger vehicle sales increased by just 0.1% year-on-year, but that is perhaps a little encouraging given how affordability has come under immense pressure from rising interest rates and vehicle prices on the back of a weak rand that’s testing the $20 mark.

Nonetheless, the usual front runners enjoyed consistently strong sales figures in May 2023, with the Volkswagen Polo Vivo emerging victorious among the passenger cars with 1 876 units sold last month.

Is the SA-built Amarok classed as a VW or Ford export?

The new Volkswagen Amarok is built by Ford in South Africa. But does it count as a VW export or a Ford export? The answer isn’t quite as simple as you might think…

When combing through South Africa’s new-vehicle sales figures for May 2023, we noticed no number was listed in the “exports” column for the new Volkswagen Amarok. Of course, as part of a wide-ranging global alliance, Ford builds the 2nd-generation Amarok (alongside the Ranger) on behalf of VW at the Silverton factory here in South Africa.

In fact, Silverton is the only facility in the world currently producing the new Amarok, which has already launched in overseas markets such as Australia, where 645 examples were sold last month. So, where do these export units fall if not under VW’s tally (after all, the Wolfsburg-based firm ships Kariega-built Polo hatchbacks to nearly 40 different countries around the globe)?

Well, we asked VW Group South Africa for comment, but the German firm’s local division told us Ford is “responsible for the exports”, adding the Blue Oval brand is “best placed to comment on the export arrangement of the new Amarok to international markets”.
