I'm toying with the idea of the firmware upgrade. Is it safe to do? Or do I need a Doctorate in Neurosurgery and a Masters in Alien Communication?

I still haven't upgraded mine, I am sill weighing my options. Some people have had great results and some had their phones bricked. The upgrade process itself aren't very complex, just follow the pdf doc instructions although some people do say that you need the modem driver to be installed first: http://sg.samsungmobile.com/promoti.../omnia/SamsungModem_xp.zip&p_visitgbn=0000012
 
Got my phone 2 days ago and i'm loving it - sleek, thin and sexy.
Just one question: loaded Garmin from the supplied SD card (works absolutely brilliantly) and then took it out and put the SD into my PC to transfer some mp3's to it, but my PC doesn't seem to pick up the SD card?? I've also inserted it into my PS3 and it also isn't picked up as an external storage device. Am i missing something/ Should the card first be unlocked or is there some special way of getting it to be recognized by other devices, ie my PC.

Map update nice and simple, very happy with the mapping.
Still waaaay to scared to do the firmware, went to the voda store i got my phone from and got some blank stares and directions to vodaworld midrand....not amused.
Will try go there this week and find out if they will do the firmware upgrade, i dont think its worth the risk bricking my phone...
 
What a disappointment. The version they're flogging is from October 2008. There have been many iterative releases since that are widely considered far more stable.

I guess we'll have to wait another 6 months for a new version :(

Just been to Samsung in Vodaworld they said I need to take it to Vodacare and let them do the upgrade, but I am not interested in booking my phone in for two weeks...

2 weeks???? what possible reason could they need the phone for 2 weeks for??? I am starting to rage.

thanks for saving me the vodaworld trip though....i think i might have set the place on fire had i got there...

I didn't go to Vodacare so I am not entirely sure how long it would take, but from what Ive heard, they book it in and then send it to a repair center...
 
Can someone please tell me what the model nr is for the data cable that came with your phone? Ive read somewhere that it could have a influence on the update process.

is this written on the cable? I will check when i get home, not with me at the moment....

The "modem driver" appears to be Activesync.

No Vista instrutions to do the upgrade yet. :mad:

Yes I think samsung screwed up here, the one under downloads on the Samsung blog site is activesync. Download the real modem driver from here. (XP)
 
I did the upgrade.

So I decided to go ahead and do the firmware upgrade. Was on JCHH1 now on JCHJ3:p. Had no problems at all. Here is how I did mine:
1. I made sure I had the modem driver installed.
2. I disabled all running applications om my computer except for activesync.
3. Did a backup of all my data on the phone.
4. Removed the sd card with garmin installed.
5. Did a hard reset on my phone clearing all memory.
6. Made sure the phone is charged.
7. Made sure my laptop is charged (just in case there is a power failure).
8. Followed the upgrade manual.(I just made sure before I clicked start that my PC picks up the device in device manager)

Hope this helps someone.
Maybe I was just lucky, I had 0 errors. Still this is risky business.
 
Just did the upgrade. The provided ActiveSync package on Samsungblog.co.za did not work as the upgrade failed the first time around, but after downloading the 400-odd kilobyte Samsung CDMA driver it worked just fine.

Well I guess it depends on which version you are currently on? For example: on some older versions there was no business card reader or haptic feedback. If I had the vodafone version I would not even think twice about it... I agree with Piesang that JCHH1 is stable enough. I haven't tested the battery performance yet though...
