THREE ARRESTED FOR MALL ROBBERIES

Two men and a woman have been arrested for allegedly committing two mall robberies last week in Gauteng, police said on Tuesday.

"The three suspects... were arrested in Yeoville, Johannesburg, in a crime intelligence-driven operation that started late on Thursday night and carried on into the early hours of Friday morning," said Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale.

"When they were arrested, the 30-year-old woman had three unlicensed firearms and several rounds of live ammunition in her possession. She is reportedly the keeper of the arms and ammunition for this gang."

Apart from being linked to the two mall robberies, police believed the three were part of a larger gang, with police searching for other members.

On Friday, Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said that around 1.30pm a group of people entered a Telkom store at the Irene Mall in Centurion pretending to be shoppers.

When the manager of the store attempted to stop the group from entering the store with the trolley they were pushing they threatened him with a firearm.

"The suspects then demanded keys to the safe and took cellular phones and cash," said Mothiba.

"The suspects fired shots before fleeing in two vehicles -- a Quantum kombi and an Audi A4."

The Audi, which was hijacked in Secunda, Mpumalanga, in June, had been recovered.

"The Audi was recovered when police later cornered one suspect on Olifantsfontein Road [in Midrand]," said Mothiba.

Two of the cellphones stolen were also recovered.

The other robbery occurred on Wednesday in the Vaal, south of Johannesburg.

The three's arrest also follows the arrest of four people in Table View, Cape Town, on Friday, near a cellular shop.

The four allegedly had illegal firearms in their possession, and their involvement in other armed robberies was being investigated.

Makgale said: "The latest arrests bring to 30 the total number of people arrested in connection with mall robberies in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

"On the previous Friday, the police's swift response led to the arrest of six men immediately after they had robbed a Vodacom shop in the Centurion Mall."

During the arrest, police recovered three firearms and two bags full of cellular phones.

Police strongly believed the robbers were connected to the spate of mall robberies around the country.

Makgale appealed to the management of malls to increase security, especially around inner perimeters, and to the public to contact police if they had information on any mall robberies or other crimes.

Cape Town - Telkom has expressed concern about the alarming rate at which businesses nationwide are being targeted after two of its stores in different provinces were attacked in less than five days.

This was said by Telkom spokesman Pynee Chetty on Monday after two Telkom stores were robbed.

A Telkom Direct store in Sea Point became the latest shop to be affected when armed men stormed the premises at 9.30am on Monday.

Another Telkom store, at Irene Village Mall in Centurion, Gauteng, was robbed on Friday.

Police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed the incident.

“An armed robbery incident took place this morning (Monday) at about 09.30 in the business premises in Main Road, Sea Point.

“According to the reports, four armed men entered the shop and demanded keys to the safe and then took an undisclosed amount of cellphones and cash.

“Thereafter they fled the scene.

“No injuries were reported. Police are investigating a case of armed robbery.

“No arrests have been made,” Kinana said.

Police said a suspect had been arrested in connection with the Irene Village Mall robbery on Friday.

A group of armed men had entered the Telkom store, demanding keys to the safe.

the malls are going to suffer come Christmas time. if people aren't feeling safe they are going to think twice and thrice about going shopping there. that time of here you find yourself having to endure multiple visits. I have a feeling this year will be restricted to one or two.

I don't know, my trip to aus 2 years ago made me realise how much south Africans love to shop, even compared to the first world.

Not a shopping centre, probably a residential complex, but yeah... video is disturbing!

Cape Town - The Lifestyle Centre on Kloof Street in Cape Town has become the latest target in a spate of robberies on malls in the city.

Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk said two armed men entered an office at 8.30pm and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing.

No injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.

A post on the Facebook group Public Servant WC Appreciation Squad suggested that the centre’s parking management team were robbed.

Three armed men also robbed a parking office at the Cape Gate Mall in Brackenfell on Sunday.

A witness, who declined to be named, said

The robbers had arrived in a black Toyota Yaris at around 7.39am.

“They proceeded straight to the parking office, opened the door and forced two female staff members into the walk-in safe and took the money from the parking machines.”

The witness said the robbers were seen leaving the parking office with a bucket.

Police spokesman Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana confirmed the robbery.

“According to the reports, three armed suspects entered the shop and demanded an undisclosed amount of cash and then fled the scene,” Kinana said.

Police were investigating a case of armed robbery and no arrests had been made.

There have been at least 20 attacks on malls in Cape Town in the past two months. Last month, a security guard was shot and killed in an apparent cash heist at the Waterstone Village Centre near Somerset West.

On Saturday, four armed men fled with computer equipment, two cars and an undisclosed amount of money when they robbed an electronic store in Montague Gardens.

Kinana said the men overpowered staff who were opening an LG store.

The men tied up the staff in a back room before fleeing with the goods. The two cars that the robbers fled in belonged to the store’s staff.

Why Cape Town? Rest of the country is extremely quiet by comparison, or people aren't bothering to open cases with the police?
