MOTHIBA TO BRIEF MEDIA ON MALL ROBBERIES

Gauteng police commissioner Lesetja Mothiba will brief the media on Tuesday on the recent spate of shopping mall robberies in the province.

On Monday night, a robbery at a cellphone store at the Glen shopping centre in Ormonde, Johannesburg, was the sixth robbery of shop in a mall in the past two months.

"The suspects stole cellphones and fled the scene," said Captain Doniah Mothutsane.

Since November last year, the mall's Samsung, iStore, and Vodacom shops were robbed.

A Telkom store at the Kolonade mall in Montana, Pretoria, was robbed of electronic goods worth over R200,000 last Tuesday.

On Monday, shops in the Maponya mall, Soweto, and the Northgate mall were robbed. A group of six men were involved in robbing security guards collecting money from inside the Maponya mall. One of the men fired a shot at the entrance.

At Northgate mall, two men forced the manager of the cellphone store into the back office and robbed the store.

The iStore at Centurion Mall was robbed of goods worth over R1 million on August 22.

On August 13, the iStore at Cresta mall in Johannesburg was robbed. One person was injured when the gang made their getaway. In all the other robberies nobody was hurt.

On Saturday a G4S security guard was shot dead when four men robbed them of cash they had collected from the Diepkloof Black Chain shopping centre in Soweto.

FIVE HELD FOR JOBURG ROBBERY

Five people were arrested in Brixton and Doornfontein, Johannesburg, on Tuesday for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said.

"During the arrest police confiscated a 9mm pistol and three semi-automatic rifles as well as 97 live rounds of ammunition," he told reporters in Johannesburg.

Mothiba said investigations would focus on their alleged involvement in a robbery in Diepkloof, Soweto, on Saturday, and whether they were linked to ATM bombings, taxi violence, and business robberies.

MALL ROBBERIES TARGET GADGETS, NOT MONEY

Most of the recent mall robberies in Gauteng have targeted technical gadgets, Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said on Tuesday.

"[In] 95 percent of robberies so far, cellphones are the target. Cash is minimal," Mothiba told reporters in Johannesburg.

"In two incidents cash was [stolen]. Both incidents occurred in Soweto: one at Maponya mall and another at the Black Chain shopping centre in Diepkloof."

He said ways of rendering stolen cellphones useless should be looked into. Security measures at some malls were not up to standard.

"As things stand, these criminals committed these crimes very easily."

Mall security was a joint approach between the police and mall management.

"We would want to see mall security taking that seriously," he said.

"We have set up meetings with mall management to beef up security... as well as looking at their security systems at the premises."

Mothiba said the CCTV footage at some of the malls was of poor quality, and in some instances cameras were not switched on.

A reward of R200,000 has been offered for information leading to the arrest and successful prosecution of the criminals.

Five people possibly linked to the robberies were arrested in Brixton and Doornfontein on Tuesday for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

"During the arrest police confiscated a 9mm pistol and three semi-automatic rifles as well as 97 live rounds of ammunition," Mothiba said.

Mothiba said police were investigating whether they were linked to two mall robberies including the one in Diepkloof, Soweto, on Saturday.

Police would also investigate their links to ATM bombings, taxi violence and business robbery.

Eleven mall robberies have taken place since August 13.

GAUTENG MALLS HARDEST HIT BY ROBBERIES

Gauteng malls have been robbed 11 times in the past month, Gauteng police commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said on Tuesday.

"Gauteng is the worst affected province," Mothiba told reporters in Johannesburg.

He said there had been isolated incidents in other provinces, but that Gauteng malls had been robbed 11 times since August 13.

On Monday night, a robbery took place at an Altech Autopage cellphone store at the Glen shopping centre in Ormonde, Johannesburg. Three armed robbers stole 15 cellphones worth R34,000.

The Samsung, iStore, and Vodacom shops in the mall have all been robbed since November last year.

On Saturday, a G4S security guard was shot dead when four men robbed him and his colleagues of cash they had collected from the Diepkloof Black Chain shopping centre in Soweto.

A Samsung shop was robbed at the Cradlestone mall in Krugersdorp, on the West Rand, on Friday.

"The robbers made off with cellphones and tablets worth hundreds of thousands of rand," Mothiba said.

On Thursday, a Timberland clothing store at the World Wear shopping centre in Fairlands, Johannesburg, was robbed. Eight men took all the clothing in the shop and an undisclosed amount of money.

On Wednesday, the Telkom Connect shop in the Eastgate Shopping Centre was robbed of cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

A cellphone store in Northgate Mall was robbed last Tuesday. A Telkom Direct store at Kolonnade Shopping Centre in Pretoria, was robbed on the same day.

"This is the second robbery at the [Kolonnade] store in almost two weeks," Mothiba said.

Last Monday, a cashbox was stolen from two security guards at a Pick n Pay paypoint in the Maponya Mall, in Soweto.

Apple iStores were robbed on August 13, 14 and 15 at Cresta Shopping Centre, The Glen and Centurion malls respectively.

Mothiba said 12 malls had been identified as high risk. Police visibility would be increased, with the deployment of Nyalas (armoured vehicles).

The modus operandi of the robbers was to enter shops posing as customers.

Mothiba said police suspected all the robberies may have been inside jobs, which was worrying.

"At Kolonnade the robbers were waiting for the delivery vehicle bringing the cellphones. How did they know it was coming on that day and at that time?

Police "definitely" suspected that all the robbers had inside information, either from employees or security guards.

He urged employers to look into their employees' integrity because it made the police and shop owners' jobs difficult.

Armed robbery about 10 minutes ago...

They must have heard how lucrative this is in Joburg.

Predicts this going to become a common crime ... Low risk, high reward, many targets.

Soon stores will store stock off site.

These thugs hear of other thugs doing it and getting away with it. Then they all want a piece of the action. Easy money, for the bastards that want everything for mahala. Fkn scum of the earth. Chop their hands off for a start. The UAE is one of the safest places for good reason.

What it has highlighted is how these malls are poorly guarded and have been easy targets. The smaller shops within the malls may not have their own armed guards...

You couldn't pay me enough to live there though.
