I took 0.2g this morning and I feel like I have been spaced the whole day. Can’t bring myself to do anything. I don’t know if mushrooms are right for me. Does anybody know of anything else to treat anxiety?
You might not be used to it, if you notice it that much. I notice it, but it doesn't bother me.
So, a few things about mushrooms with regards to things like anxiety.
With microdosing like you are doing now, it will take longer to see any effects, but when you do, they are permanent.
I don't know how you acquired your anxiety, but I recommend reading a book called Childhood Disrupted. A lot of the content there is also applicable to post traumatic stress disorder, if that is what you have. Childhood Disrupted focuses on what happens to our brains when we go through childhood trauma.
Now, I'm going to be careful with the language that I use here because I don't want to something like "you are like so" and then you might think it is 100% true. It might not. So I will talk about myself.
When I went through childhood trauma, it affected the normal development of my brain, resulting in my stress response being overactive. When something stressful happens to someone, the stress response activates to help you deal with it, and then the stress response goes away. Because of what I went through, this wasn't always the case. I tended to be in fight or flight mode most of the time - its like my stress levels were permanently turned up. This is a very summarised version by the way.
So you have a case where childhood trauma affects the developing child's brain, and as an adult, you have a hard time coping and you don't understand why. You get stressed out all the time, and there is the familiar interplay between stress, anxiety and depression. I'm sure you are familiar with that.
What you need then is some way to regrow the brain, to regrow those neurons, to change the connections in the brain.
Now this is possible, as an adult, despite what some people believe. Scientific studies have confirmed it in humans - brain growth slows down as an adult but doesn't stop. Certain things have been known to promote more brain growth (neurogenesis) than others.
Meditation causes neurogenesis, and this is why long term meditators tend to have lower stress levels than non-meditators. Exercise also causes neurogenesis by the way, and sleep is critical for it.
But so do mushrooms. Any dose of mushrooms at all will cause neurogenesis, although this doesn't mean that one 100g dose will magically fix you. It does mean that microdosing, over time, has the POTENTIAL to cause neurogenesis, and thus increase feelings of well being and reduce stress.
I want to stress the word potential - I don't want to promise you the world.
But the important thing, in terms of anxiety reduction, is that first you need to grow the new neurons. This takes time. Unfortunately with microdosing, you will probably have to microdose for at least a month before you should expect to see any results. Combining microdosing with meditation would be beneficial but I don't think it would mean you would see results quicker. Maybe better results but not faster.
