The Silver Surfer Thread (iBurst 2Mbps Modem)

R3499

What the fluff, that's expensive!

Can anyone confirm that the R1299 pre-paid can be linked to a contract account?

FML! I renewed my contract two months ago and opted for a second modem to use with my laptop... If I had just waited a couple of months I could have gone for the 2mbps mode and then just used my old modem for my laptop. FFFFFFFFFFFFF!

Anyone other than rooi got one of these yet? Dead curious to see a speed test. Also does anyone know when iburst will be doing their package reviews, I might even consider coming back if they can offer better uncapped speeds.

Sent from my apple stomping, berry crushing droid! Samsung Galaxy S.

Rooi gave a gazillion speedtests/pingtests in other threads.

I wanted speed tests from other folks when they get the modems. We don't all live in areas with fantastic reception, and I was wondering if these modems would increase average throughput in less optimal areas. ie 1.2Mbps instead of 600k.

thats what i would expect if you average 600Kbps on 1 modeedm you should average 1.2Mbps on 2 modems

I would love to see 12 month contract options

Hi

I have also seen that the modems are priced R3499 on the website, BUT... big BUT... in the letter I received with my latest iBurst invoices, they say the following:
We’re introducing a new 2MB/s modem at a cost of only R1 299! This modem is a big leap ahead technology-wise, and promises you much greater surfing speeds, dependent on the network coverage and load in your area.

So now this is very confusing... But I'm definitely not paying R3499 if I should be paying only R1299...

If the 2Mbps modem is just "2 modems stuck together"... does that mean that VAS 128 will actually be 128x2 (ie VAS 256)?

If so, I'll pick one up

If you rely on VAS, odds are you will be better offer picking up a second 1Mbps modem and using to low end accounts with VAS load balance between the two. You will still get max 128K per connection but overall speed would be better than wasting your money on a 2Mbps modem and only browsing at 128k

I already own 2 1Mbps modems... yes, I was trying my luck to get essentially 512... shhhhhh
