The Silver Surfer Thread (iBurst 2Mbps Modem)

I must renew my iburst contract and have the option to get the 2mb modem for R120 extra a month.
My speed according to speedtest.net is 0.79 Mbps
So is it worth the extra R120, will my speeds actually increase allot?
Or must I just stay with the 1mb modem?
The 2Mbps modem is like two 1Mbps modems in one package. You should get close to double what you get on a 1Mbps modem, so about 1.58 Mbps.

Hi all,

My contract is expiring this year. Looking at the renewal options, it says I can upgrade to a 2mbps modem and keep my existing USB modem.
So a couple of questions:
- do I need to pay in extra (once off/additional monthly fee) if I choose to get the modem?
- is the latency on the 2mbps better or worse than the 1mbps modem?

I'm getting pings of 250-300ms on selected EU servers with my USB modem.

Thanks in advance.

You will need to pay an additional R120 (more or less) per month for the upgrade and the latency will be more or less the same (even on ADSL, my mate is getting around 220 to 280 to EU servers).

Hi guys,

I'm looking into getting a 2mb iBurst modem. I had no idea I could up my speed to 2mb just by purchasing the modem without changing my contract (this is correct?)!

I was just wondering if anyone would be so kind as to answer some questions I had (I am not very clued up):

1) I only need the modem? Do I need the antenna and splitter if I already have very good signal here in Sea Point, Cape Town?

2) Does it still connect via USB? I can't really tell by looking at pictures of it. I really don't want to change my current setup too much. I am sharing the net using Internet Connection Sharing to get onto PSN on my PS4, and I would hope I could just unplug my current modem, plug this one in with very little change to the way I have things at the moment (besides the change in speed of course)

Any help would be much appreciated.

You only need the splitter if you want to use a single antenna.

No, the 2Mbps modem does not have a USB connection. Just get a "broadband router", i.e. one with a dedicated WAN port that can establish a PPPoE connection. You won't regret it.

Ok cool, but (sorry if this is a very stupid question) do I need a router? Can I not just continue to have the modem direct to my laptop (or is that just not how it works?), PS4 via ethernet and share the connection with the PS4? I have no need for WiFi or anything other than what I have now, so avoiding the additional cost of a router would be ideal.

My current speed according to speedtest.net is 0.94

It's never really slower than that where I currently have the USB modem located.

I'm actually still just baffled that it's just a matter of changing my modem to get 2mb without having to change my contract or agreement with iBurst. :wtf:

The 2Mbps modem only has an Ethernet connection. You can connect it directly to your laptop, but then you'll need a second Ethernet connection on your laptop, or an Ethernet switch, to connect to your PS4.

One of the advantages of wireless. :)

Oh ok. Hmm, that makes sense then. Guess I'll have to hold off until I can afford a router as well. Thanks for the reply :)

I personally used my iBurst modem with the TP-Link MR3420 (R499 ex.Vat) which works very nicely with iBurst.

If you think that's expensive, go for the cheaper TP-Link MR3220 which goes for R395 ex.Vat.

They also work with a 3G dongle for Back-up.

Ok, I just bought a 2mb modem (as in 20 minutes ago) and I was hoping someone would be so kind as to help me be prepared for when it arrives. I'm not completely useless. I've fiddled with MTU, static ip, DNS etc, but I am pretty much clueless when it comes to routers.

I decided to not take the splitter or Omni antenna as my signal is already very good (I'll get one if need be).

Anyway, it's pretty clear I will need a router, and as I said I'm clueless - never used one. A friend said they have one lying around, but they aren't sure it is what I'm looking for. This is it - will it work? - http://www.cnet.com/products/netgear-dg632-adsl-modem-router/

If not I will buy one that will from the products already suggested to me in this thread.

So my main concern is getting it to work with my PS4. Ideally I wanted to continue having my PS4 connected to my laptop via Ethernet, but that port is going to be occupied by the router. I will have to have it as follows:

Laptop connected to the modem via Ethernet, but will it be possible for the modem to connect to the router wired and give off a WiFi signal for the PS4 to connect to, because it isn't a wireless router.

The other option was to get an Ethernet switch and have both the modem and PS4 connected to my laptop via Ethernet and continue to use Internet Connection Sharing, but I actually wouldn't mind having a router since my downloads are sometimes fragmented and corrupted and from what I understand, a router can stop this happening?

Are there any other suggestions that would make my setup with this modem and router work?

First prize is a wired connection for my PS4 somehow.

Any assistance would be much appreciated! :)

AFAIK That router doesn't have a WAN port so no you cant use it for Iburst. so none of your options will help

Just get any router that has a WAN port and can make PPPOE connection - and has Wifi

Hi there, thanks for the response.

These are the ports: http://www.nwlab.net/rev/netgear-dg632b/netgear-dg632b-back.jpg

Will it be possible as far as you know to have a setup where I end up with an Ethernet connection to my PS4? (I will get the correct router that makes this possible). I'd really like to not use WiFi for the console if possible.

1 port is the telephone and the other one is an ethernet (LAN) port no WAN.

Basically any router* you use should have 1 WAN Port and about 4 LAN ports (which one can go to your PS4's ethernet port) I agree on not using wifi for consoles :)

When my previous router went the way of the dodo - i bought this one from Matric cheap and easy to set up and worked well with Iburst:
Blink Router

Its cheap and chinese but did the job.

Not sure if possible with the Ps4 but with my xbox i connected my iburst modem directly to the console and used the console to dial out - till i got a router.

*Not ADSL routers very few of them would have a WAN port

Hmm, ok so I need a new router. Guess I'll be buying one before the modem arrives so I can actually use the thing the way I want to :D

Forgive the repeatedly stupid questions, so I purchase a router with enough LAN ports I will be able to have the following setup:

Router LAN port 1 - Laptop
LAN port 2 - iBurst Modem
LAN port 3 - PS4

What is the WAN port for by the way? :o

I was beginning to think it wasn't possible to have a wired connection to my console with the iBurst modem!

Unfortunately I don't think I can plug it in directly to the PS4 (although I may try this for interest sake), but hopefully the above will work.

Actually just reading up on plugging the modem direct to the console and it seems to be a pretty commonly done thing (with Xbox 360 anyway). What was it like speed wise? Downloads? My main reason for wanting a router is to hopefully eliminate some of my corrupted downloads.

Still getting a router, but having this option would be nice.

Most routers should come with 5 ports 1 Wan and 4 LAN

WAN port to iburst modem thats the one that will do the 'dialing' to connect to the net (that answers that question) - it will probably say WAN on it or be a different colour to the other ports

LAN 1 - Laptop
LAN 2 - PS4
LAN 3 / 4 - any other devices you want (DVD, Blu ray, Media player)
and Wifi for your phones tablets etc

Speed wise If i recall correctly was no different to connecting via router (Just can't remember how i or if could set the MTU on the xbox)
as for your corrupted downloads was this on your PS4 or on your laptop?
if Laptop maybe invest in a download program (Like free download manager)

ANd I have to be honest Iburst isn't the best option for online gaming, (or general internet nowadays) I used them for years and they used to be great but i started having issues and now recently went over to ADSL

Ok great. I think I'll hit the shops tomorrow to get a router. The iBurst modem should come with a WAN cable, correct? Do you think it will be easy enough to configure all of this? I'm most likely going to go with this one http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=32_85&products_id=651 which was suggested on the previous page. There was another one http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?cPath=32_85&products_id=423 but I should get away with the cheaper one? It seems to have what I need. 1 x WAN, 4 X LAN.

For some strange reason it is only PS3/PS4 downloads that are sometimes corrupted. Xbox 360 and PC have never failed to download over iBurst. Weird, but hoping to fix it with this new setup. You can set MTU on PS4, so I will try direct connection sometime just to see if it works.

This is more for downloads rather than online gaming. I very rarely play online (some Halo which was actually surprisingly fine), but I just want patches and smaller games really.

Really appreciate the help! :)
