The Silver Surfer Thread (iBurst 2Mbps Modem)

^My family also conspired to have their birthdays within a few days of each other, my poor bank account hates it.
On the topic of shaping, would it not be possible to stop shaping after hours?

What do you mean "stop shaping after hours"?! We are capped, this means we must be unshaped at all times!

Shame Rooigevaar. :)

All I want is cheaper OOB rates and better latencies. ;) Maybe a speed increase as well.

Exacto-Mundo.....

Why would the ISP shape at all ?? Why would Iburst worry on what we use our Cap for. We all know P2P uses the most cap. (How long could you possibly use 2Gig / 5gig cap on P2P ????)

If you do want to use your data, you don't want to struggle to use it....

Infact by Unshaping, Iburst would propably have more customers topup more regular. This would also attract more customers who are into Games and users who use P2P Apps (VOIP like Skype, Video Calls and the obvious... DC++/Torrents and the like)

Is it just me thinking this way ???

There are subscribers who download like a train without breaking the spectrum with P2P. They put the uncapped ADSL guys to shame. Rather take that route.

Apologises then, needed to make sure, that there are no other "hidden" factors. Please, can you comment on mysterious solution of problems I've described?

Also, can acoustic interference from 5,5KW compressor block signals completely?

The Internet works in strange and mysterious ways. Before Tutu retires he needs to chair an Upstream Truth Commission.

Interference is a major issue in wireless, if not the single biggest problem. Since we operate in a regulated spectrum we have assistance from the regulator to address violations. Any electrical equipment which spills over with interference into regulated spectrum is required to be suitably shielded. As an example, don't use your microwave oven as a shelf for your modem.

Would you mind explaining how the shaping is different on the Wireless 5 and above? In another thread you stated if P2P traffic was detected that the number of connections is limited to 4.

I can understand how the number of connections could affect the performance of your firewall, but how is downloading 1Mbps of HTTP traffic different to downloading 1Mbps of P2P traffic on the wireless interface, isn't it all just packets?

Vodacom don't have any P2P shaping on their 3G network, in fact my best ever experience (1.5GB in 1 hour) with BitTorrent has been on their network. Why doesn't their wireless network seem to be affected by this?

The CIR for P2P is higher or higher vale packages.

The issue is the number of connections of whatever speed impacts the air interface. One guy doing 100 P2P sessions would equate to 50 normal guys browsing. Rather have a few hundred on a tower than a dozen.

Vodacom has natural demand management because of the higher data price. This results in most subscribers using the service with less contention. Higher prices mean less usage and as a result less contention. You'll have great performance when you have a tower to yourself.

Newton's laws: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton's_laws_of_motion

The customers would jump ship as contention comes into play. However, maybe put into ICASA's suggestion box to allocate us 50Mhz spectrum like Sentech and I'll you'll havea few more notches on the P2P throttle loosened, as there will be more spectrum. At the momemnt we are only using a miserly 5Mhz.

It's a cloudy saturday morning, time for a ping test:

Shaping happens on most ISPs, if there should be shaping or not is for a more general discussion. I'm for it, means my steam downloads get priority :D

1 Mb/s unshaped, unthrottled, uncontented and managed can cost up to R11k. The ISPs need to do something to make the price reasonable and that why it is called broadband and not direct internet access. Many people who buy broadband make the assumption that it is their right to demand direct internet access.

r00igev@@r why don't you just put in an extra 0 after the 5 of "5Mhz" and then provide lesser shaped Service. ?

I'm sure that our Surfing experience will be much better if Iburst could loosen the "throttling" a notch or two. (Currently most customers are blue in the face already... chill on the shaping and add more priority for the Gaming/Alternative ports)

Thanks

Napalm

Will make the suggestion to our regulator. With 50 it is easy to put ADSL to shame even at 10 Mb/s.

Why...

Hi im new to posting here at Mybroadband, but have been reading the posts here for some time...

Im currently on the Iburst 5gb wireless package, i dont have any complaint I have had great service and http speeds of 90-110... but that not what i care about if i wanted to download i would have adsl uncapped.

I am with IBurst for online gaming as adsl (tested) in my area 512 - 4mb gets a higher ms than my iburst running 2 - 3 (mostly 2) WOW accounts most of the time...

My q ... why do i go from 290 - 400ms one min to 4000 - 12000ms (in-game) the next min... "in-Game" as pingtest.net "while still in-game with 4 -12k ms" gives a ping of 250 - 400ms to Frankfurt where the server is located. (still need to run a tracert to the server while the above mentioned is happening)...

No its not that im suddenly using more bandwith as the usages for wow is on the low side and remains relatively constant, its just my ping that suddenly jumps, this is not after a loading screen or on a new encounter this happens randomly while running around / while in a boss fight while sitting in town....

this happens with or with out battleping (battleping helps to lower my ms when it doesnt spike)

Would adding another modem help with this problem?

Any help or at least some advice on how to improve my wow experience ms wise would be greatly appreciated.

:wtf:

Unless someone is doing something else on the connection, 2 modems wont help you.

If you are spiking from 300ms to 12000ms, it means that either seacom has died (again) OR something is using your connection OR peak times. If it's completely random, it might be your AV updating - windows updating - or something in the background.

Recently, blizzard also removed the wow option to turn off "on the fly downloading". Meaning wow now automatically downloads as you play.

There are some things you can do to improve your wow pings (to about 200ms for a single account, jumps to about 300ms if two of you are playing). I've forgotten how to do it, but I'm sure google will be helpful.

Remember, you cannot combine 2 modems and expect 2MB to wow. Connections to games are linked by 1 IP address so even if you manage to link them, wow will only use 1 of the modems.

Cool and thnkz for the fast reply.

I have tested some of the lag fixes currently using battleping that helps get me down to the 200 - 300 ms.

dont think its updates of any kind as i have been sitting with multiple network monitors on one screen waiting for this to happen and try and spot the problem, i do feel that it is random but when it happens my network usage stays the same or maybe even drops a lil bit.

im now playing with my MTU setting and is seems to help but havnt fully tested it iburst recommended a MTu of 1352 aswell as 1392 but "google" says 1400 - 1500, where as im getting much better pings with 1252, not sure how a MTU that low will handle 2 accounts or raids yet... not sleeping till i know :)

My wow averages between 2 an 4 kbps

once again thanks for the reply.

This cant have some thing to do with iburst shaping
