Fixed that for you.

The speedtest downloads more on faster connections, but ends up taking the same amount of time.

Speedtest is statistically more accurate at lower speeds based on that fact that it has a set time in which it runs it's test.

It is still a valid tool (and gives a good indication) but the amount of incorrect samples will be proportionally higher at the higher speeds.
 
2mbit is an upgrade from the original 1mbit. But i doubt if the Price of the 2mbit Modem "Justify's" the speed.


True the per gig pricing ratio of Iburst Wireless Data bundles are lower than Vodacom/MTN. But an 3.6mbit or 7.2mbit modem cost around R400-R600 at max.

** Again i know it's not the same technology.. Iburst is not Vodacom.... It's like comparing Oranges with Bananna's. **


Then again... you can get Cell-C 2gig per month for 12months at an once off fee of R999. (or R41.50 per gig)


The question you should be asking is, at the end of the day...... What fruit do you like and can you afford it :)

iBurst is dropping the ball. They sent out a mil the other day about upping the download speeds to 2MBps. Unfortunately, this will involve buying a new modem. That's not worth it for me either. I am waiting for fibre in JHB.
 
Ye, Essentially. You have to buy new Hardware. 2mbit Modem is around R3500-R3700 (Once off) or R175-R180 per month if you take the 2year contract.


Which is really sad in my honnest opinion. I would have renewed my contract if it wasn't for the hefty Modem price. At this stage it's not worth it for me. I need 2mbit or faster for my mobile devices (Laptop etc). I don't have R3700 just laying around and adding another R180 per month to my Iburst bill won't help me either..

I'm simply not willing to fork out that dough. <--- Sounds like a cookery channel

Rooi, is there anyway to monitor the signal strength on the silver surfer in real time? The web interface only updates the information every 5 seconds which is making it hard for me to find the Goldilocks zone.
 
My 2MB/s modem is connected to my router. My router's IP address is 192.168.1.1. How do I get into my modem to check the signal without unplugging it from the router and plugging it into my laptop?

I don't know if it will work on the Joker.
 
r00igev@@r what is the maximum speed that you can get from the usb modem? If it can't get the same speeds as the Silver Surfer are there any developments to make usb modems that cab get those speeds?

No,

The dev was done 5 years ago by Kyo but no-one has funded the seed so it is still on paper.

That's a shame. I like some of the packages that you are offering now and by the looks of it there is a nice new package in the pipeline. A 2mb usb modem would be handy.

Stay around, there is some excitement in store.

BTW: a Blonde, Dark Knight or Silver surfer will never die despite reports to the contrary. Obtain an ATA, configure it with [email protected] (password: freeconnect), attach your old Telkom handset and volia it becomes a voice line that even your granny can use. So if you have one in your cupboard, dig it out, there is still life in the old dog.
 
Thanks for the info, I do have an old iburst modem laying around somewhere but want the usb for mobility and because it's cheaper than the Iburst express modem.
