The Suzuki Dzire 1.2 GA costs R7 000 more than its predecessor, while the GL+ is R12 000 pricier than the previous-gen GL. All variants are sold with a 5-year/200 000 km warranty and a 4-year/60 000 km service plan (the service plan has been increased from the previous model’s 3 years or 45 000 km).

The new model also comes with far more safety equipment as standard, including ABS, EBD and electronic stability control (ESC), 6 airbags, rear parking sensors and -ISOfix anchor points.

Summary

The Suzuki Dzire caters to a market that (now almost exclusively) serves ride-sharing operators. To service that market, the GA variant has the basics for comfort without frills that would hike the price.

The GL+ seems to cater for the ride-sharing market and general consumers who want a cheap sedan, but don’t want it to look like an Uber car. It has black wheels, a boot spoiler and some extra goodies that make it a little less plain than the other small sedans on the market. The Swift will certainly remain the volume seller, but if a small sedan piques your interest, the Dzire has a little something going for it.

New Honda Amaze versus Suzuki Dzire: which is the best compact sedan on the block?

VERDICT

We really want to choose a winner here, but it’s an unbelievably close call.

Both are excellent choices in the small sedan market, but if aspects such as value, economy, and connectivity are most important to you, the Suzuki simply makes the most sense. It wins the value for money competition here, even though the Honda is really well priced in its own right.

But subjectively speaking, we prefer the Honda, albeit by the smallest of margins. It just feels like a more expensive car, both in the way it looks inside and out, and in the way it drives.

As for which has the most ridiculous-sounding name, that is a resounding tie!

Driving impressions: why the Suzuki Swift deserves its crown as the top hatchback

Currently sitting in second place on the vehicle sales charts, it’s not for nothing that Suzuki has been hitting the lights out with their refreshingly cheerful portfolio.

Chief among those is the Swift that’s dominating the passenger car market.

Popular among first-time buyers

It also helps that the brand is selling their cars in the price and categories that South African consumers are spending their money on, starting in the sub R200 000 region, with the most expensive evening out under R550 000.

The B-segment hatchback Swift has also proven popular with first-time buyers, and I know of quite a few people who have bought one for their children going on to study further after school.

We spent some time in the flagship 1.2 GLX, priced at R271 900, and it’s easy to understand why they are proving so popular and walked away with the 2025 ‘Best Budget Car’ title in the cars.co.za Consumer Awards.

Engine

Replacing the previous four-cylinder engine, the Swift is now fitted with Suzuki’s new 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol mill that delivers 60kW and 112NM of torque.

The test unit was fitted with a five-speed manual transmission, although there is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) available as well.

Verdict

The Suzuki Dzire 1.2 GL+ manual nails the essentials: a practical, efficient, and well-equipped compact sedan that makes a strong case for urban and everyday use. Its real-world fuel economy (5.1 L/100 km), ample cabin and boot space, and full safety and infotainment suite elevate its appeal.

Just be prepared to manage the condition of the beige seats diligently. Therefore, for buyers focused on economy, space, and value, the Dzire stands out in its segment.
