What is the etiquette on tipping the Tattoo artist for the free touch up session?
 
yeah but do you tip for that session or only for the paid original session?

I usually tip at the end when making final payment. Ask your artists. They usually have a facility where you can include it in the total, and personally, I think that is the best way.

The amount is up to you, but for me, I usually tip 20%, obviously provided I as satisfied.

As for the free touch-up, well, those are free. Take some cake or something, build that relationship.
 
Ooh cake! I like that, might drop by Crispy creme on the way and get all the artists some doughnuts hmmm

I'm pretty close with my artist and often take treats and gifts for the shop. When you spend hours and hours in the shop you become friends instead of just a client. I've been out partying and hang with my artist outside of the shop as well.

Because I'm actually mates with my artist I do get a couple of hours for nothing every now and then. But I definitely don't act like a decent human being by taking treats for the shop in hope of getting a "discount", and I hope you're not going to do the same :erm:
 
How do you guys approach designs?

Do you slap together your own design and hand it over to the artist or do you give the artist some examples and tell him what you are looking for, then leave it all up to them to do the design for you?

Or do you just take a pic from pinterest and get that inked? :)

For mine I have taken a main picture in my case two Symbols (spider-man and Jedi) and given them to the artists and said I want this but your own embelishment on them. It should be a discussion between you and the artist. They need to understand what you like and don't like.
So if you getting a Justin Beiber portrait take that portrait with and any Tattoo Portraits you like (not necessarily of Beibs) and so they can work out the style you like.

Tell us what you want and we can maybe suggest what to take with. In my experience i just took my ipad with a crap ton of tattoos and pictures I liked and the guys were able to come up with a design that just worked out great. Remember its your body so you have to live with the design, so you should be part of the design.

My first was easy. Because it was just a quote.
The 2nd has just as much meaning in my life. No, a lot more.

I pretty much want to get something that represents my father.
I asked my whole family to sum my dad up in 1 or 2 words and almost everybody said calm and solid.

Then my sister summed it up perfectly by saying he is like a river. Calm on the surface but strong and powerful underneath. And he goes where he goes and nothing stops him.

So my initial idea is to get like a mountain river scene.

The other thing is I don't really know where I would like it. Would like it to be visible to myself. So the back is out. Maybe inside of my forearm or something. I dunno.

I really really like something like this.

First prize would be something like this but think it will be difficult and costly to do and the amount of small detail means it might not age well???

Guess I will just have to take these ideas to Sky and Louis and hear what they have to say.
 
Yeah the shape of the body where you want to place something will also shape the Tattoo to an extent. Take them with but be willing to compromise t what will translate better a a tattoo.
They may have also done a few similar designs and will be able to tell you what will work and what wont. If they are good artists that is. If its just someone who transfers and inks i would take my business elsewhere.
Another thing to consider is if you put it on an arm or leg and you plan to do a sleeve eventually. It may help to discuss that as well. Most artists will design a basic sleeve concept and then you can get the actual art done over a number of year, just helps to make it all come together properly so you don't land up with clashing art or make it unnecessarily hard to add to down the line.
Never rush a tattoo or an artist, its like pissing off a waiter before you get your food. Just don't.
 
One of my mates is an award winning artist, and he will not work without an agreed "proof" if you don't go to him with exactly what you want. He will take your suggestions, sketch it together on paper and will advise what will and will not work. For instance, the ink in fine lettering will bleed over the course of time, so the tattoo will not hold for long so he would advise against that. Any design issues will be dealt with before he starts the work. His usual hourly rate applies when putting together the proof. The artist will also often have some very good ideas once you give him a framework to work with, so I see it as a conversation.
 
Yip must say we do have some really world class Tattoo Artists in South Africa.
