The Tattoo Thread

I used bepathan for the first two weeks or so then E45 till it healed for my last one.

Bepanthen is the standard go-to for after care, and I've got a friend who then uses the Bee Natural stuff (forget the exact one) with very good results

Bepanthen definitely isn't the go-to anymore, there are far better and more modern ways to heal. Bepanthen has been known to let lines blow out during healing.

Using a post-surgery/wound dressing for the initial healing is becoming very popular, well-know artists and shops locally and abroad are pushing the method.

In the states they use Tegaderm/Saniderm, we get it locally but Clicks has a much more cost effective copy. It's basically a clear semi-breathable wound dressing that is applied to the skin over the tattooed area. It allows the tattoo to wet heal. Most of the healing happens while it's covered and wet, usually for around 5 days. Once the dressing comes off the flaky/scaby stage is already over and it's straight to the usual simple moisturiser stage.

My artist will usually clean and wrap my tattoos in cling wrap when i leave the shop. I'll leave this first cling wrap dressing on over night to let the skin bleed and ooze and do all that nasty first night ****.
The next morning it's into the shower for a clean and rinse. No soap. I'll just get all of that initial gunk and plasma off the skin as best as possible. You can usually get all of it off with some gentle hand wiping and cool shower water.
Out the shower I let the tattoo air dry. Once dry it's time to apply the dressing, no creams or ointments.
Clicks has a range of sizes and shapes of the dressings, I'll use multiple dressings to cover the entire tattoo.

This same dressing is left on for 3-5 days, as long as you can stand to keep it on. If you're active and continue to exercise (like me) you'll eventually get a bit put off by the little pockets of sweat that might pool up under the dressing :wtf: At which point it's time to take it off and let the dry healing begin.
5 days is usually a point duration with the dressing though.
From then on I just use basic unfragranced IntensiveCare cream, and after that tissue oil.

My artist has a roll of the dressing so he'll measure off a piece if I need to cover a larger area, but the Clicks sizes can usually do the trick.

Sweet thanks for that. Will go get some today in prep

You're also up and running again the next day without having the tattoo being an open wound. You don't have to be careful about it rubbing or scraping against things or weeping/bleeding onto your clothes. I go back gym the next day.

Munky, his line work is insane.

yeah, he is a cool dude as well. Always plays music from bands ive never heard of!

Are you guys still using Bepanthan for after care?

I used bepanthan on my first 7 hour session, used some tattoo oil on my 2nd session, and some tattoo after care cream on my 3rd.
Would say the healing on bepanthan was a little worse, the oil and cream were about the same.
Results after healing were all identical.

Paid just under R6K. Artist finished sooner than he thought he would.

Yeah Munkys line work is the very reason i went to him, as my sleeve is all going to be in this outline style.
