The Tattoo Thread

I'm also new to the tattoo game, thought I'd share cause it is a pretty interesting and unusual way it is going down...

Started in March 2022 with a legit dumbass (but amazing) decision to get my first tattoo via the Mystery Machine at Mystery Fun Club in Cape Town. You pay R1000 and whatever comes out is what you get. Analysis paralysis had prevented me from getting ink so this was the cure. Went with three other fiends and we all got one. Such a jol.

This is what came out, pure Americana design lifted straight from the 1930's and it was done by Shane (kitten2pawz on Insta) on my inner wrist:

Have always wanted a full sleeve so came up with a concept based on what I randomly got, to go from traditional at the bottom and make it more and more Neotraditional as we move up the arm towards the shoulder. Luckily for me Mystery Fun Club has a Neotraditional specialist in the form of Jerry James so the two partners at the studio are going to collaborate on the sleeve and design it together.

Speaking of design... I will never choose or give input into any piece. This is part of the concept. The artists can choose the pieces and the only constraint is that the whole sleeve must be:
  • patchwork
  • colour
  • work as a cohesive and singular piece of tattoo art
  • art for art's sake
So went back in early May for the next round and this is what happened, walked in without knowing what was gonna go on me :) done by Shane again on my forearm right next to the first one.

Then went last week to get the elbow piece done by Jerry because Shane is overseas for a bit. Also had no idea going in what Jerry had cooked up but he did this:

This badboy isn't finished yet, loadshedding came earlier than we expected and it took longer than expected cause my boi was putting a lot of effort in. Going back next week to finish. This was the original design and where we going:

Now this elbow piece is very interesting because it acts as a transition piece between the two styles Traditional vs Neotraditional. If you look closely every aspect of all the elements changes at the half way point i.e. leaves, petals, line style, shading style. I think it is a genius and subtle design and gets the balance just right.

Can't wait for what comes next! Want to fill in all the gaps in the lower half of the arm as the next step.

EDIT: saw I misspelled "friends" in the first paragraph but I'm gonna leave "fiends" as that is an accurate description of my homies.

I love that transitioning idea, it's brilliant! I'm pretty much the same with my artist on my second sleeve, we discuss ideas and the overall theme and feel, and he sketches what we do on the day.

I had some ink done around two weeks ago but we didn't really get any great photos. Working on second Gaiman sleeve, focusing on Sandman this time. Unlike my previous Gaiman sleeve that is filled with colour, this one is all black, with some highlights to be added at the end with colour. Very happy with where it's going.

We didn't get a good photo of Dream's hand unfortunately, but it's beautiful. Next sitting is October.
