New Toyota Century limousine revealed as ultra-exclusive Rolls-Royce competitor

Low-volume model sits atop Toyota’s line-up in Japan, with just 50 units to be sold per month

Toyota has revealed its new Century limousine, the redesigned luxury saloon that claims the title of Japan’s most popular chauffeur-driven luxury car.

Under the bonnet is a 5.0-litre V8 engine with supplementary electric motor to form a hybrid system producing 425bhp in total. This system replaces a V12 that featured in the previous Century and achieves 38.4mpg on the Japanese test cycle. Performance figures have not been released.

Toyota aims to sell 50 per month in Japan, although official pricing has not yet been revealed. Given the fact that the Century is hand-built, it’s expected to carry a hefty premium over the brand’s other mass-produced models, and a price well into six figures is certain. The car’s badge alone, a phoenix, takes six weeks to engrave.

The new car gets more modern safety technologies, including Toyota’s Safety Sense pack, which consists of a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic lights and road sign recognition.

Soundproofing sits high on the agenda when constructing the Century, while a system to limit engine noise and vibration is also fitted. The rear pillar of the car has been made more upright to give onlookers a greater sense of significance of the rear passengers, says Toyota.

The Century was first introduced in 1967 and was named in celebration of Toyota founder Sakichi Toyoda’s 100th birthday. The new car is the first full refresh the model has had in 21 years, although it still uses traditional techniques in its design and construction.

Compared with the outgoing model, the new Century's wheelbase increases by 65mm to 3090mm to provide more rear and, to aid entry and exit, the car sits lower to the floor by 15mm. At 5335mm long, it’s 110mm longer than the extended-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz S-Class, and is 1930mm wide and 1505mm tall.

Once in the back, the left-hand passenger in the new Century has an electric extending leg rest, massage seat and an 11.3in entertainment system with 20 speakers and a 7.0in touchpad control module.

Another Mysteriously Awesome Toyota Century GRMN Just Debuted In Black

A couple of weeks ago, the CEO of Toyota showed up to a track event in his custom pearl white Toyota Century GRMN, which is Toyota’s beautiful limousine extruded through a Gazoo Racing filter. It was believed to be a one-off until a second Century GRMN, painted black this time, showed up to the Tokyo Auto Salon.

Carscoops has some photos of the Century GRMN at the Auto Salon, and here’s the video they also found of some of its details up close:

For now, not much more is known about the Century GRMN beyond its looks from its multiple public appearances. It’s a clear favorite of Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda, and both the white and black cars share a license plate reading “18-67,” a reference to the 1867 birth year of Toyoda’s great-grandfather and Toyota founder Sakichi Toyoda.

As we mentioned with the latest public outing of the white car, it’s unclear if there are any actual performance modifications to the cars over the Century’s regular hybrid V8 that makes 376 horsepower.

It’s odd that Toyota’s Japanese Instagram account has posted its other cars from the Tokyo Auto Salon, but not this one.

It’s possible that Toyota is teasing this pair of sportified luxury limos as a way of gauging interest in making a production run. Or perhaps they’re strictly for business use by Mr. Toyoda. Maybe he treats them like tuxedos—a formal white and a casual black.

I absolutely abhor the GRMN moniker, one can only imagine my disgust when they decide to put it on this fine gentleman's ride.

The Most Interesting Car Toyota Makes Is Too Luxurious for America

Forget what you’ve heard; the Toyota Century isn’t a “Japanese Rolls-Royce.” The Century is very much its own thing. It’s Japan’s interpretation on the ultimate luxury automobile and unlike any other car, luxury or otherwise, ever made.

It sits at the very top of Toyota’s lineup, above even the Lexus LS flagship. After driving the Alphard and Crown, I’ve finally leveled up to the final boss level of Toyota’s premium Japanese domestic lineup with the Century.

Amazingly, in its 52-year history there have only been three generations of Century. The latest one made its public debut on its 50th anniversary at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

It’s gone all modern and eco-friendly with a polar bear-hugging 5.0-liter V8 hybrid under the bonnet, replacing the second-generation’s much-discussed but rarely-heard V12.

Century soft-top is Toyota's Rolls-Royce

A Japanese Rolls-Royce?

Japan’s new emperor is to be officially inaugurated in October 2019 and he’ll need a car for this very public occasion. One which is very obviously Japanese and sufficiently regal. Supplying the bespoke transport for this inauguration is Toyota, which is Japan’s largest and most powerful automaker. It marks the transition from the Heisei Era to the Reiwa Era for Japan’s royal family.

Crown Prince Naruhito will ride to his ceremonial duties in October, seated in the back of a Toyota Century. But it won’t be any Century. Toyota has built a special Century convertible for the occasion and if you though that Rolls-Royce was choice transport for royalty, well, not in Japan.

The Century limousine range is only available in Japan’s domestic market. It blends boxy 1980s American boulevard cruiser styling with build quality which is perhaps unrivaled by any other car. Powering the Century is a Lexus V8 hybrid, which means that it can run in virtual silence at parade speed. If the royal family were ever in a hurry, total system output for the 5-litre V8 and its electric motors peaks at 317 kW.

This Is The New Japanese Emperor's Opulent One-Off Toyota Century Convertible

Back in May, a new Japanese emperor ascended to the throne, and to celebrate, Emperor Naruhito ordered a custom Toyota Century convertible, the first one ever. The order was placed early to be ready for the emperor’s public coronation next month—but we’re getting our first look at this beauty now.

This is a big deal just for the fact that Toyota doesn’t like to mess around with its traditions when it comes to these opulent luxury cars, but you just can’t turn down an emperor.

But it’s a damn good choice: Emperor Naruhito will need a convertible in order to be visible on the coronation parade route on October 22, Japanese Nostalgic Car notes. And what better car than one of the country’s most beautiful vehicles? It’s built with extreme attention to detail, as Toyota’s press release reports:

Japanese Tuner TOM'S Has Built A Tuned Toyota Century

The Toyota Century has always been a quiet car. Dead quiet. Silent. The kind of car for a captain of industry to relax in after a long day on the job. Or for a Yakuza boss to slink around the seedier parts of Osaka after a, um, long day on the job. At least, that used to be the case.

Now, with this TOM’S Century, it’s becoming clear that the Japanese ultra-luxury sedan market has turned a corner. The near-silent ride on special cloth seats behind lace curtains in the back of a Century has been supplanted. By tuner cars.

About a year ago, we were introduced to a new kind of Toyota Century when Toyota President Morizo Akio Toyoda rolled up to a track event in a white one that had been given the special treatment by his in-house tuning and motorsports crew, Gazoo Racing. This car, the GRMN Century, was eventually officially revealed shortly after at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon along with a black twin. Mesh grille, body kit, and special wheels fitted, the cars looked the part but were reportedly unchanged underneath from their more buttoned-up production siblings. Still, the fact that these cars had any sporting pretensions whatsoever (even if they were only skin-deep) represented a stark departure from any production Century we had seen before.

Toyota Century Limo With R275k Exhaust Screams Like A Supercar

Toyota built a Century limousine for Japan only and even though it packed a large 5.0-litre naturally-aspirated V12, it was fitted with five mufflers so it whispered everywhere it went.

Now, YouTuber effspot has gone and fitted an $18,000 (approx R275k) exhaust to the $4,500 Century with results that need to be experienced with headphones on.
