The Toyota Century Thread

Toyota has unveiled an ultra-posh £135,000 Century SUV for Japan

The “Century for the next century” is here, complete with a 3.5-litre V6 plug-in hybrid powertrain

Up until its first properly luxurious car landed in 1967, Toyota says “the Japanese chauffeur car market was dominated by Western luxury brands". And though the 2018 Century is a masterpiece, Rolls-Royce now has the Cullinan, Bentley has the Bentayga and BMW has the X7.

Welcome then - somewhat inevitably - to the all-new Toyota Century SUV. Designed to be driven by chauffeurs and solely for the Japanese market, we’re told that this is the “Century for the next century". Nice.

It’ll be sold alongside the saloon but features an all-new construction and powertrain. There's imposing bodywork featuring, in Toyota's words, ‘stately grandeur’ design language, quad set-back lights and an ‘exquisitely engraved phoenix emblem’. Beneath that resides a 3.5-litre V6 and an electric motor at each end for a plug-in hybrid powertrain that sends 406bhp to all four wheels through an e-CVT gearbox. The all-electric range is 43 miles on a single charge.

There’s four-wheel steering to tighten the turning circle and then stabilise things at speed, plus a ‘Rear Comfort’ drive mode that smoothes out acceleration and braking to allow those in the back a comfortable nap or non-shakey Zoom meeting.

What the heck? *Convertible* version of Toyota Century SUV teased

The possibilities are… ‘open’, according to Toyota. Arf arf

Conventional car wisdom would suggest launching a convertible version of an SUV is what marketing types call an ‘unprogressable concept’ and what mere humans determine as a ‘bad idea’. And yet, if any car can make it work, surely it’s the indefatigable Toyota Century?

Behold: it is the indefatigable Toyota Century, fresh from its reinvention as a massive, plush SUV, sporting yet another guise as a massive, plush, convertible SUV.

No real mention has been made of the convertible Toyota Century SUV. In fact, no mention has been made of the convertible Toyota Century SUV, other than a cringeworthy pun during the reveal presentation in Japan and a shady teaser image.

“The opportunities are only limited by your imagination,” said Toyota’s Simon Humphries. “If you want to drive the vehicle yourself at the weekend the GRMN will certainly not disappoint.

Toyota Century to become stand-alone luxury brand

A fresh report suggests that Toyota Century will be come a stand-alone luxury brand which targets high net worth individuals.

The Toyota Century is a product that is not well known outside of its home market of Japan. It offers a premium and luxurious experience and is positioned as transport for the elite. Previously, there have been sedans and even a special convertible, but right now there’s just the single SUV in the range.

According to an article by Forbes, Toyota is reportedly in the process of repositioning its Century as a stand-alone luxury brand that will go up against Bentley and Maybach-Mercedes. You may wonder why Lexus isn’t being upgraded to this top tier, but we understand that Century will be positioned as Toyota’s Rolls-Royce.

The source in the Forbes report quotes an unnamed Toyota exec who said “The Century will actually be positioned above the Lexus brand as an extra luxurious brand.” Right now, Toyota is still marketing the vehicle you see here as the “Toyota Century” but we reckon there will be other vehicles bearing the Century name which will be revealed in the next few years. Once there’s a diverse lineup, Toyota will likely ditch the prefix and formally announce the Century brand.

The Century SUV and sedan are powered by a petrol plug-in hybrid 3.5-litre V6 with 303 kW and it has a pure-electric range of 69 km. It’s sold exclusively in Japan and China.
