The Toyota GT86 Thread

"Subaru has revealed the facelifted BRZ, which boasts updated styling and a slight increase in power.

The news follows Toyota’s unveiling of the facelifted 86 in March 2016; the two are, of course, closely related.

Like Toyota, Subaru says that its updated sports-car gains improved handling – thanks to uprated coil springs and dampers, and a larger rear stabiliser bar – as well as new convenience features.

The Subaru BRZ’s rigidity has also been increased thanks to additional reinforcements to the strut tower braces, transmission cross-member plate and the rear wheel housings.

The stability control system thresholds have furthermore been raised, with the resultant changes dramatic enough for Subaru to change the name of “Sport” mode to “Track” mode.

So, what about that power hike? Well, don’t get too excited. The naturally aspirated 2,0-litre Boxer four-cylinder engine remains, but has received internal updates for friction reduction, including new valves, camshaft and cylinder heads.

There’s also a new aluminium intake manifold and a redesigned exhaust manifold. The result of all this under-bonnet fettling? The six-speed manual model sees its peak power increase from 147 kW to 153 kW, while maximum torque rises from 205 N.m to 212 N.m. So, the same as the facelifted Toyota 86, then.

The brand adds that a lower final drive ratio (from 4.1 to 4.3:1) together with the standard Torsen limited-slip differential “improves acceleration on models with the manual transmission”.

Cosmetic changes, meanwhile, include a new front bumper, new full-LED headlights, LED fog-lamps, and a new aluminium rear spoiler (in matching body colour and black finish). The tail-lamps have also been updated to full-LED, and the rear garnish above the licence plate features a new design. There are also new alloy wheel designs on offer.

Inside, there’s a new 4,2-inch multifunction display and a redesigned leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Will this updated model be offered in South Africa? Unfortunately not, with our contact at Subaru Southern Africa suggesting local buyers still favour the WRX over the BRZ due to the “major power output difference”. This was, however, to be expected, with the outgoing BRZ having been pulled from the local market back in September 2015."

Toyota pays homage with Initial D 86 Concept

The legendary Toyota Corolla Trueno AE86 was made famous by the Initial D manga/anime series in which 17-year old Takumi Fujiwara used the panda-themed coupe to own the mountain roads of Japan.

Toyota feels that it’s just about time to pay tribute to this series by speccing its spiritual successor, the Toyota 86, in an identical trim. Meet the Toyota 86 Initial D Concept.

Visual updates include the panda-style monochrome livery seen on the Trueno as well as additional carbon-fibre door handle protectors and mirror covers, mud flaps, removal of the boot-lid spoiler and tinted taillamps. Other cues include the yellow-tinted foglamps (a hint to the Cibié spotlights fitted to improve Takumi’s night-vision) and the silver-painted engine cover, a nod to the high-revving 20-valve “Silver Top” 4A-GE engine installed during the series.

The Initial D 86 also makes use of various performance enhancements, in effect upgrades of the parts used in Takumi’s car in the series. These include custom-made RS Watanabe alloy wheels, a TRD suspension, Fujitsubo exhaust system, Cusco strut brace and a carbon-fibre bonnet.

The Initial D edition is just a concept and Toyota has failed to provide any information regarding the performance figures, but let’s hope, for the Initial D fans out there, that this package becomes a reality. It will be attending motoring events around Britain throughout the summer.

Earlier this year, Toyota took the wraps off the facelifted 86. Now, the Japanese brand’s in-house tuner has released an extensive list of modifications for the updated rear-wheel drive sports car.

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) has created a whole host of upgrades, including a black front splitter and a fresh set of LED daytime running lights.

The facelifted Toyota 86 can also be kitted out with new side-skirts and a fairly subtle rear spoiler. Well, subtle in comparison to the carbon-fibre rear wing also available. A new rear bumper is also on the list, along with a set of in-your-face quad exhaust pipes.

Other styling modifications include new alloy wheel options, as well as a host of more subtle updates, from (questionable) fender vent inserts to black accents below the windows.

Under the skin, TRD is also offering adjustable coilovers, a front tower brace, an underbody brace set, a mechanical limited-slip differential and even a new clutch plate.

In the cabin, the company offers a choice of full bucket or sports seats, as well as a few other TRD-branded bits and bobs. Interestingly, the infotainment system can be replaced by a meter kit, which includes gauges for water temperature, oil pressure and oil temperature.

At the moment, the TRD parts are available only through Toyota dealers in Japan, although we can expect at least a few of the options to make their way to other parts of the world when the facelifted Toyota 86 rolls out globally.

Ridiculous to refer to TRD as a tuner. All they do is create overpriced skirts and accessories...

The facelifted 2017 Toyota GT86 will go on sale in the UK next month, priced from £25,495.

High on the refreshed model's list of improvements is a revised intake and exhaust system, which Toyota says delivers a more linear torque delivery on manual versions of the GT86, while tweaks to the shock absorbers are said to boost stability. Both ride and rigidity have been improved with the addition of more spot welds on the rear pillars. Upgraded shock absorbers will also now feature in the options list.

The car's 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine still produces 197bhp and 151lb ft, so the 0-62mph sprint time remains the same at 7.6sec and the car's top speed is 140mph

Toyota says the aerodynamics of the GT86 have been improved thanks to revisions across the car's exterior, while inside a 362mm-diameter steering wheel - the smallest the brand has ever used - and a 4.2in infotainment screen, which is now standard on GT and GT Limited models, top the improvements. The new screen can show performance-orientated statistics such as live G-force loadings and power and torque patterns, in addition to more practical information such as fuel economy.

In a bid to make the GT86 feel more premium, Toyota has added new leather and Alcantara upholstery to the cabin, with soft-touch suede-effect material on the door trims. Added to the options list is new cloth upholstery with contrasting silver stitching.

Aesthetic changes to the exterior include a restyled front bumper with new three-slat inlets and LED headlights. The car also sits on new 10-spoke alloy wheels.

The car's new starting price increases over that of the outgoing model by a substantial £2795.

Looking at the prices above, we are getting close to GTI pricing now...
