Toyota Hilux wins International Pick-Up of the Year award
The Toyota Hilux has been crowned the international International Pick-Up of the Year at this year’s Solutrans exhibition, attended by 900 guests at EuroExpo Hall 2,2.
“Every other year since 2009, the International Pick-up Award (IPUA) is presented to the most efficient one-tonne pick-up truck in business today. As a multi-functional vehicle produced and sold globally, both the product and marketplace continues to evolve with many brands setting high standards in performance, safety, driver and passenger comfort,” explained Jarlath Sweeney, Chairman of the International Van of the Year Award jury, which organises the competition.
Before electing the overall victor, the nominated trucks are assessed and analysed by the expert panel from the IVOTY jury at a specially organised group test. On this occasion, this event was held in Croatia in early October, near Zadar.

Hilux vs Ranger: Here’s which bakkie sold the most in October ’21
Yes, we are already at the end of November but we finally have results for the double-cab bakkie race in South Africa with regards to the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux specifically, for October 2021. The information is based on what has been reported by Lightstone Auto.
Including the double-cab, extra-cab and single-cab body configurations, Lightstone confirms that the Toyota Hilux continues to lead the race with a total sales figure of 2 470 units while the Ford Ranger, which is soon to be replaced by a new model, paces behind with a figure of 1 363 units.
The sales driver for the Toyota Hilux once again was the double-cab variant with a figure of 1 116 units sold. This was followed by the single-cab boasting a result of 900 units and the extra-cab with 454 units. The Ford Ranger’s most popular bodystyle was the double-cab as well with a reported sales figure of 1 079 units while the single- and extra-cab sold 142 units each.
Year-to-date, the Hilux is well in the lead with a total of 31 101 units reportedly sold. The Ranger challenges this with a result of 16 983 units.
With a combined sales figure of 1 548 units of October 2021 is Isuzu D-Max, placing it above the Ranger in the sales charts. This model sold 828 double-cabs, 609 single-cabs and 111 extra-cabs. The year-to-date figure for this model is reportedly 13 521 units.

South African Dakar Rally legend, Giniel de Villiers, has introduced Toyota Hilux Dakar custom package for the double-cab variant. De Villiers, who has been closely associated with the Toyota brand over the last decade, worked in collaboration with 4×4 Mega World to help him tailor the kit.
“The idea with the GDV Racing Toyota Hilux is to offer enthusiasts the opportunity to live their passion,” says De Villiers. “To my eyes, the bakkie is clearly non-standard, but it doesn’t feature any custom bodywork. This gives the car a stylish yet rugged appearance, and together with the changes under the skin, will set this vehicle apart from the regular Toyota Hilux.”
Three tiers of development for the Toyota Hilux Dakar custom package are available to customers, starting with a decal-only kit at approximately R7 600. The next tier includes decals, a stainless nudge bar, stainless roll bar, ARB Intensity lights and Takla seat covers, with the GDV Racing logo embroidered.

However, if you’re seeking a serious off-roader then ‘Tier 3’ is the option for you. It includes an adjustable Old Man Emu BP51 suspension system, which raises the vehicle by 50mm. Is this our first taste of the next Toyota Hilux? 15 new EV concept cars revealed!
Toyota may have been a hybrid technology pioneer, but the Japanese carmaker was a relative latecomer to the market for fully electric cars. However, it seems the company has every intention of catching up. To show the world how serious it is, Toyota revealed 15 new electric car concepts on Tuesday.
This came with the announcement that Toyota plans to invest 8 trillion yen (about R1 trillion) in electrifying its range. This will result in 30 new battery-powered cars seeing light of day by 2030.
It appears that a battery-powered Toyota Hilux is also on the cards. This will probably be a derivative of the next-generation Hilux, which means that the EV pick-up concept you see here (looking like a scaled-down Tundra) could be our first official look at the new model.
Toyota remains tight-lipped about the next Hilux, but it is expected to see light of day before the middle of this decade, and rumour has it that it will also offer the LC300’s new 3.3-litre turbodiesel V6 as an option. It is likely that the next Hilux will offer a variety of powertrains, from diesel to petrol, hybrid and fully-electric.

A little over a week ago, we asked CAR readers to vote for their reader’s car of the year. The results are in!!!
The competition was tough with the usual Toyota and Volkswagen suspects appearing as ‘top of the pops’. Hardly surprising by now given how the Chinese newcomer has taken the motoring landscape by storm, but the Haval Jolion 1,5T Luxury Auto is in the top five, being beaten only by Volkswagen and Toyota offerings…
In for the running, we also have a Porsche, a Honda and a Mercedes-Benz, as well as two hybrids an EV and an MPV for a total of fifteen vehicles from twelve manufacturers.
And so, with fewer than 50 votes separating the winner and second place, CAR’s 2021 reader’s CAR of the year is – drumroll, confetti at the ready, oversized cheque in the wings – the Toyota Hilux 2,8 GD-6 4×4 Legend RS.
It was closer than we could ever have expected, with the Volkswagen Golf GTI coming in at a close second and the Toyota Corolla Cross 1,8 Hybrid XR taking third. Who would have thought that a homologation special would ever be in the running for a CAR of the Year award, but the Toyota GR Yaris takes fourth place, followed by the aforementioned Haval Jolion 1,6T Luxury Auto in fifth, even pipping the venerable Ford Ranger to the post by a mere ten votes!

Toyota has revealed the Hilux GR Sport, a new flagship trim level for the popular pick-up truck which was inspired by the firm's success in the Dakar Rally.
An exterior visual overhaul and GR-themed interior upgrades help the GR Sport stand out from the regular Toyota Hilux, while a retuned suspension system promises improved handling over the standard truck.
New monotube shock absorbers give faster damping and improved heat dissipation, while stiffer front springs help sharpen steering angle response. Toyota also claims ride comfort has been improved over the standard Hilux.
In a nod to the successful fourth generation Hilux of the early 1980s, GR Sport models feature the TOYOTA name across the front grille in place of the current brand emblem. The truck rides on 17in alloy wheels, finished in black, with colour-matched wing mirrors, side steps, tailgate handle and over-fenders.
Inside, GR-branded sports seats, carpet mats and starter button help differentiate the model from other Hilux trims. Aluminium pedals and steering wheel-mounted shift paddles are also included as standard.
GR Sport models will be exclusively powered by the 2.8-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine also found elsewhere in the Hilux line-up, producing 201bhp and 369lb ft. It is paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox and sends power to both axles.

Toyota Europe has confirmed the launch of the new Hilux GR Sport. With inspiration straight from Toyota Gazoo Racing, this looks to be the sportiest Hilux to date.
Toyota is always keen to point out its Dakar successes with the Hilux and this tough offroad race serves as the inspiration for the all-new Toyota Hilux GR Sport.
The popular bakkie has never been slack in the offroad department, but the Toyota Hilux GR Sport is more capable. There’s an upgraded suspension system featuring monotube shock absorbers, new front springs, automatic limited-slip differential and active traction control. There are also upgrades to the vibration and noise countermeasures.
Toyota claims these upgrades ‘ deliver significant improvements in handling characteristics, including steering effort and steering angle response, straight-line performance, a flat ride and reassuring roll and rear grip feel.’
As far as visual changes go, the Toyota Hilux GR Sport features a black front grille with G-pattern mesh and a classic-looking Toyota emblem. There are new larger front fog light surrounds, 17-inch alloy wheels which are black and machined and wrapped in all-terrain tyres. There is black detailing on the door mirror casings, side steps, tailgate handle and over-fenders. The shocks and springs are finished in red and there’s subtle GR Sport badges. It’s more subtle than the Thai-built wild Revo Hilux shown in 2021.
When will the Toyota Hilux GR Sport go on sale?

10 best-selling bakkies in South Africa: December 2021
We’ve laid our paws on detailed Naamsa figures and picked out the country’s best-selling bakkies for the month. Here’s what you need to know!
While the year-on-year sales performance of South Africa’s total new vehicle market fell 3.5% in December 2021, the decline was a little more aggressive in the light-commercial space at 16.6%. This part of the market, of course, is dominated by bakkies, with a handful of dropside workhorses and commercial vans thrown in for good measure.
Here, we’ll concentrate on exactly how the individual players in the traditional bakkie market fared in the final month of 2021. We’ve combed through the statistics to identify the models that proved most popular with local buyers as well as those that found themselves languishing at the very foot of the table.
Predictably, the venerable Toyota Hilux was the strongest-selling bakkie in December, with 2 426 units registered. The Prospecton-built Hilux finished 2021 with a considerable tally of 36 085 units, again making it the country’s top-selling vehicle by quite some margin. With a new flagship GR-S version set to hit the market towards the middle of the year, the Hilux’s crushing dominance shows no signs of abating.

So, what about the bit-part players? Well, the Mahindra Bolero found 52 buyers in December. Peugeot registered 38 units of its Landtrek in what was the Chinese-built bakkie’s first full month on sale, enough to put it just ahead of the often-overlooked Mitsubishi Triton (32). The Mazda BT-50, meanwhile, continued to disappoint on the sales charts, with the imported D-Max-based bakkie settling for a mere 14 units for the month.

While the Ranger found itself quite some way off the pace in terms of local sales in the final month of 2021, its export figure of 5 093 units wasn’t far behind the Hilux’s tally of 5 771 units. The D-Max (292) was third in the export race, ahead of the facelifted Navara (232). Interestingly, Nissan also shipped off 158 examples of its Hardbody – a model that has since been discontinued locally – during the month.

The Toyota Hilux is a predictably unpretentious machine, and its attempts to court lifestyle truck buyers have done little to alienate its core following while rounding off some of its rougher on-road manners. The most welcome upgrade is the new 2.8-litre engine, alleviating the older cars’ tardy performance particularly when fully loaded.
The cabin remains grim in areas and it’s a cumbersome beast to helm around, but if anything that’s a constant reminder this isn’t a vehicle to pose in – it’s a tool, a faithful workhorse, and a dependable business partner.
