The world’s largest bakkie market has even more choice, but South African buyers could finally get their wish and have more ‘American’ bakkies available in the future, locally.
Does this mean that bakkies like Toyota’s Tacoma might finally be sold alongside Hilux, here? Not quite. The outcome of radical consolidation in the automotive world could mean more bakkie platform twins in future.
As the burden of hybridization and electrification costs rise, manufacturers are struggling to justify multiple platforms. For decades, VW proved what could be done in the passenger car market with shared platforms – and that logic is now starting to ring true for bakkies.
A bakkie’s ladder frame design makes platform convergence much simpler, but enormous demand and ease of supply have never triggered an issue or the need to share. Until now.

Toyota Gazoo Racing unleashes 2022 Dakar Hilux contender with twin-turbo V6
Toyota Gazoo Racing has pulled the covers off its brand new GR DKR Hilux T1+ racing bakkie that will compete in the 2022 Dakar Rally.
The local racing outfit also announced a four-strong team that will include Nasser Al-Attiyah with navigator Mathieu Baumel, South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers navigated by Dennis Murphy, Henk Lategan with Brett Cummings and Shameer Variawa with Danie Stassen.
The 2022 Toyota GR DKR Hilux T1+ has undergone significant improvements for next year’s rally, optimised for the latest race regulations. These include bigger running gear, 37-inch tyres (up from 32”) and an improved suspension system with more travel, given that the previous limit of 280mm has been increased to 350mm.
But the big news is the fitment of a brand new 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 powerplant derived from the unit found in the new Toyota Land Cruiser 300. Toyota hasn’t provided any output figures as yet, but says its numbers are “significantly higher” than the road car’s 305kW and 650Nm.
“We are very pleased to announce a team that is very similar to last year,” team principal Glyn Hall said. “With Nasser and Giniel heading up our attack, and Henk gaining confidence, we are excited to take on the 2022 edition of the Dakar Rally. Our new GR DKR Hilux T1+ is progressing well, and we are confident that the new car will allow us to compete on a new level, come January.”

This extreme-looking Toyota Hilux is the creation of a Thailand-based tuner and we’re in love.
While we wait anxiously for Toyota to make a worthy rival to the cool and capable Ford Ranger Raptor, many tuners have filled the gap with their own creations.
Like South Africa, Thailand also has a fanatical passion for bakkies and there are plenty of custom shops catering for a rapidly growing market that all want extreme versions of their double-cab bakkies.
What you see here is the creation of a company called Rad Bumper who specialise in making extreme and capable version of the Toyota Hilux.
While product specifics were not mentioned, one glance at these photos gives you some idea of the extensive work that has gone into converting your run-of-the-mill Hilux into this mega machine. There are massive front and rear wheel arches, additional front lighting, an aggressive front bumper and we can see offroad-specific tyres.
The vehicle has also been given a heavy-duty offroad suspension and there’s a new bonnet complete with performance air intake. Finally, there’s plenty of aftermarket decals.

The Toyota Hilux has been given a rather drastic body kit by Thai off-roading specialists RAD. The conclusive kit provides changes to the entire body as well as the suspension to give the double-cab bakkie more of an edge off the beaten track.
In total, 14 elements of the Toyota Hilux are altered by the RAD kit. At the front, a dynamic grille with a pair of PIAA spotlamps is joined by a bull bar and custom front bumper with integrated foglamps. For added protection, a front crank cover is applied to the front-end of the chassis. The dynamic look is completed by an aggressive bonnet with a scoop.
At the sides, the Toyota Hilux has been given a drastic set of widened fenders that are connected by a pair of side steps. This is further accentuated by a sportsbar, custom door mirrors, roof rails and a TJM snorkel.

Following the unveiling of its Thai “Revo” counterpart last month, the new-look Hilux GR Sport has debuted in Japan, replete with a wider body, a swathe of aesthetic updates and a tweaked suspension. Toyota South Africa must surely be considering this derivative for our market…
After all, the Japanese automotive giant’s GR Sport nameplate made its South African debut with the pre-facelift iteration of the current Hilux, but, whereas that was a limited-edition derivative, the new Land Cruiser 300 range has featured a GR Sport right from the get-go. In other words, the GR Sport is now a fixture in Toyota SA’s line-up, which suggests that there are more versions in the pipeline…
We expected that Toyota Japan would unveil the post-facelift Hilux GR Sport this month, especially considering that its Thailand-based subsidiary introduced the similarly Hilux Revo GR Sport last month in “Low-rider” (ostensibly 2WD) and “High-rider” 4-wheel-drive guises. Well, here it is, folks – right on cue.
In truth, the Japanese Hilux GR Sport looks a bit tamer than its Thai counterpart (we assume it will again be offered exclusively in white, black and red finishes), because it foregoes the latter’s decorative decals and its rectangular black foglamp surrounds are notably subtler. It also looks a little bare without a chunky sports bar affixed behind the cab!
The newcomer is marginally wider (by 45 mm) than its standard siblings – the elaborately flared wheel arches (with gloss black accents) extend the Hilux GR Sport’s overall width to 1 900 mm. Those accents are complemented by various GR Sport badges, a blacked-out grille with bold TOYOTA lettering, as well as matching lower-grille garnishes, side mirrors and rear bumper.

The Japanese-spec Toyota Hilux GR Sport has been revealed with a small set of visual enhancements both inside and out. This is joined by a favourable level of standard specification.
Compared to the model revealed by the brand’s Thai division, the Japanese-spec Toyota Hilux GR Sport is rather subtle on the looks with it just getting a mildly revised front bumper contrasted by a black grille, anti-scuff plate and foglamp surrounds.
Additional highlights include bespoke black 18-inch alloy wheels, a pair of dual-beam LED headlamp clusters and black finishing for the rear bumper and door mirror covers. Giving it a more purposeful stance are the widened wheel arches sourced from the Legend trim. This expands the body’s width by 45 mm.

The month of September may have ended a few weeks ago but we finally have results for the double-cab bakkie race in South Africa with regards to the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux specifically. The information is based on what has been reported by Lightstone Auto.
Including the double-cab, extra-cab and single-cab body configurations, Lightstone confirms that the Toyota Hilux maintains its lead of the race with a total sales figure of 2 642 units while the Ford Ranger lags behind with a figure of 1 169 units.
The sales driver for the Toyota Hilux remained the double-cab variant with a figure of 1 284 units sold. This was followed by the single-cab boasting a result of 918 units and the extra-cab with 440 units. The Ford Ranger’s most popular bodystyle was the double-cab as well with a reported sales figure of 1 013 units while the single- and extra-cab sold 90 and 66 units respectively.
Year-to-date, the Hilux is well in the lead with a total of 28 631 units reportedly sold. The Ranger challenges this with a result of 15 620 units.

While you don’t need to have a vehicle that is as extensively equipped as Warwick’s “Ultimate Overland” Hilux, it certainly helps to know that, at any time, you can pick up and go on a trip to just about anywhere (with relatively little preparation) – that is indeed a true intrinsic attraction of Overlanding. Whether the next adventure is the game-viewing trip in the Lowveld or sojourns to the surrounds of the Cederberg or the Tankwa Nature reserve or other desolate areas, including the Northern Cape close to the Orange River, it’s good to know that you can keep it simple when starting and then, who knows where to from there (as you progress on the equipment front)? Perhaps the next discovery of a once-believed-to-be-extinct tribe in Central Africa? “What are you waiting for”? Adventure awaits…

South Africa’s most popular car, the Toyota Hilux, has received a specification update in line with market feedback.
What’s changed in the Hilux range?
In 2020, when Toyota introduced the revised Hilux, only the range-topping Hilux Legend 4×4 automatic double-cab received the full-house feature treatment with nice-to-have features such as a leather interior, JBL premium sound system and Toyota Safety Sense (TSS).
Now, for 2021, Toyota is beefing up the specification for all Legend derivatives, including the Raised Body 4×2, with the inclusion of an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, leather interior, JBL premium sound system with 9 speakers, upgraded dual-zone climate control air conditioning, enhanced smart entry and Toyota Safety Sense which includes a Pre-crash system, Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control).
As for the Hilux Xtra-cab Legend derivatives, buyers will now be treated to a full leather interior as well as an electrically-adjustable driver’s seat.
The mid-range Hilux Raider specification has also been adjusted to include an alloy spare wheel (all derivatives), height-adjustable driver’s seat (all derivatives), meter illumination control (all derivatives), 60:40 split rear seats (2.4 D/Cab), rear armrest with cupholders (2.4 D/Cab), seat back pockets with hooks (2.4 D/Cab) and upgraded dual-zone climate control )2.8 D/Cab).
In terms of infotainment, Toyota has now removed the integrated navigation system as all derivatives are equipped with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and navigation can be accessed via a smartphone using Google Maps, Apple Maps and Waze.
Lastly, Toyota will be offering a new Platinum White Pearl body colour as well as a limited run Sand Beige body colour which will only be produced between October and December 2021.

As South Africa’s best-selling vehicle range, the Toyota Hilux is already available in a dizzying array of model derivatives, but that hasn’t stopped Toyota’s product planners from tinkering with the formula.
Following the facelift and engine upgrade that took place last year, the Toyota Hilux now receives a few specification tweaks in response to customer feedback.
For starters, a new Platinum White Pearl paint colour option has been added to the mix, and Toyota will also offer a new limited run of Sand Beige models until December.
On the spec front, navigation has been deleted from the infotainment system as Toyota says customers prefer to rely on apps such as Google Maps and Waze to find their way around these days.
At the upper end of the range, the Legend 4x2 model was missing some of the features that were fitted to the Legend 4x4 when it was introduced last year, but now Toyota has given it the same full-house treatment. This means the 4x2 model now boasts a leather interior, dual-zone climate control, enhanced Smart Entry System, power-adjustable driver’s seat as well as driver assistance gizmos in the form of Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping Assist and Pre-crash system. However, the JBL premium sound system remains exclusive to the 4x4 models.
All Toyota Hilux models are sold with a nine-service/90 000km service plan, with intervals set at 10 000km, and a three-year/100 000km warranty is also part of the deal.
