Has this extra 35kw materialised for 2020 SA supras? Quick look on cars.co.za and on carmag.co.za, supra listed at 250kw and z4 m40i listed at 285kw.Toyota hands GR Supra a power upgrade ... and it’s on the cards for SA!
Toyota South Africa Motors has confirmed the GR Supra is in line for a power upgrade, with the updated model on the cards for a local introduction.
As revealed by the Japanese firm’s North American arm, the GR Supra’s BMW-sourced 3,0-litre straight six will be boosted from the current 250 kW to 285 kW (that’s a full 35 kW or 14 percent more). Interestingly, this extra oomph is offered slightly higher in the rev range (now from 5 800 to 6 500 r/min) and will likely cut a couple of tenths of a second from the claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4,5 seconds.
Toyota South Africa Motors told CARmag.co.za the 285 kW version would be “introduced as a running change” pending fuel quality approval, adding that “timing hasn’t been confirmed yet”.
So, will fuel quality be an obstacle? Well, it’s worth noting BMW South Africa’s Z4 M40i, with which the Supra shares plenty (including that inline-six), has also quietly been upgraded to 285 kW.

Toyota GR Supra driver arrested for speeding at 228 km/h in Gauteng
The driver of an A90-generation Toyota GR Supra has been arrested for reportedly clocking 228 km/h on the N4 in Gauteng.
According to the Gauteng Traffic Police, the 47-year-old driver was nabbed on Saturday morning in a 120 km/h zone.
The Supra driver was arrested and is facing charges of reckless driving and exceeding the speed limit.
Separately, the Gauteng Traffic Police took a 42-year-old driver of a green Mercedes-AMG GT into custody after he was reportedly clocked at 187 km/h on the N1.

BMW boss wants alliance with Toyota to extend beyond 2025
The head of BMW has suggested he would like to “strengthen” the Munich-based firm’s alliance with Toyota, pushing it beyond 2025.
According to Automotive News Europe, BMW CEO Oliver Zipse told the Automobilwoche congress he sees the alliance stretching years into the future.
"In the next decades, we would do well to strengthen bonds," Zipse said.
The BMW Group and Toyota first agreed to form a “medium-to-long-term collaborative relationship” back in December 2011. The tie-up between the German and Japanese automakers is currently centred on the co-development of sportscars (in this case, the Z4 roadster and GR Supra) and fuel cells.

Ah, Australia, home of making things far bigger than they really should be. The Big Banana. The Big Merino. John Farnham’s career. And now, it seems, they’re ready to unleash the latest episode in “Mine’s bigger” (stop sniggering at the back) – a more powerful version of the 3.0-litre Toyota Supra.
Isn’t it enough that they have beaches as endless as the sunshine they bask in, some of the cleanest air in the world and the kind of open space so immense that you can both lose and find yourself? Well, apparently not.
While the rest of the world makes do with a frankly paltry 335bhp straight-six in their Supras, Australians get 382bhp, from the factory, with a full warranty. Torque for the upside-down Supra remains the same as the regular model, but it’s spread over a wider range, which means a 369lb ft punch from 1,800rpm all the way to 5,000rpm. And the fuel economy (at least officially) is no worse than the 335bhp version.

Think the A90-generation Toyota GR Supra could do with (even) more aggressive styling and some extra oomph? Well, Japanese firm SARD has the answer.
In existence since 1973, Sigma Advanced Racing Development has made a name for itself in the endurance racing scene. But now it's using all that experience to make certain road-going cars even faster. The latest example is this Supra.
SARD has handed the Supra a comprehensive aerodynamic package covering the front, sides and rear. Penned by Takayasu Furukawa, the man who led the Toyota 86 design team, the kit is all about wide proportions and a low centre of gravity.
In addition to the wider fenders, the Supra also gains front and rear wings to improve downforce. Airflow to the engine is improved via a new bonnet design.

Toyota GR Supra gets 405 kW tuning package from Manhart!
Manhart has revealed a fresh tuning package for the Toyota GR Supra, adding power and revising the suspension and exterior styling.
Retaining the BMW-sourced twin-scroll turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six engine, Manhart has upped the standard outputs of 250 kW and 500 N.m of torque to 405 kW and 770 N.m. To achieve this, the German firm fitted a TTE 685 turbocharger with a Wagner radiator kit and an F1 Exhaust with a sports downpipe and 200-cell catalytic converter.
