Toyota announces six-speed manual Supra and Limited edition A91

Some might argue that Toyota missed the mark the first time around, but that doesn’t change the fact that the A90 already has a cult following. It would seem as though Toyota have done what they can to give automotive enthusiasts the “perfect” Toyota Supra. #SAVETHEMANUAL. The mere mention of the Toyota Supra will send many enthusiasts into a frenzy. Conversely, others will be foaming at the mouth, arguing that the BMW-sourced powerplant means that the A90 doesn’t deserve the esteemed Supra nameplate – is the ‘new’ Supra a marmite car? Maybe…

Although we won’t see a new engine in the new Supra, Toyota has a few special changes lined up to appease the unhappy minorities, a group of people which we could argue that the new Supra isn’t actually intended for… A press release has confirmed that the 2023 GR A90 and limited edition A91 models will receive a six-speed manual transmission and a few other enhancements. The manual transmission will be available in the standard 3,0, 3,0 Premium, and A91 models.

The evolution of the upcoming Supra lineage will not only see a 500-unit run off the limited edition A91 Supra, but the introduction of a manual transmission, managed by an intelligent manual transmission (IMT) system. Toyota claims that all the added changes improve the performance aspect of the car.

It's official: Toyota will sell a manual GR Supra in South African before year's end

Before 2022 comes to a close, Toyota South Africa Motors plans on expanding its GR Supra line-up with the addition of a manual model. The car, set for a local debut in this year's third quarter, will sell alongside the automatic GR Supra and will still be powered by the BMW-sourced turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine.

According to Toyota, customer demand and expectations forced their hand in availing the GR Supra with the six-speed manual transmission while also enhancing the chassis slightly. The new gearbox will be exclusive to the 3.0-litre model, with the 2.0-litre Supra, only available in other markets, continuing with the eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The updated GR Supra line-up will debut at the Festival of Motoring in August, taking place at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit. Pricing for both the automatic and manual 3.0T variants will be announced closer to the local launch.

Is anyone actually going to buy a manual GR Supra?

Good question. On the plus side, when Porsche made the GT3 a PDK-only car, there was frothing uproar followed by queues around das block for the 911 R and manual GT3 Touring. So the ‘you can’t have DIY gears until we say so’ tactic can really pay off – on true hardcore specials.

On the other hand, how many F-Type manuals did Jaguar ever shift? One in ten Caymans in the UK has three pedals, despite being blessed with a gearshift from the gods. BMW M2 DCTs outnumber manuals by a similar margin. This could be a classic case of a car that enthusiast geeks think Toyota should build, but have no intention of actually shelling out £50k+ for themselves.

For what it’s worth, Toyota reckons the manual will take 30-40 per cent of sales. Which is a fair old chunk. Makes you wonder why they didn’t bother with it to start with, huh?

Should I buy one?

Here’s the interesting bit. While the automatic 3.0-litre Supra comes in Pro specification only, the manual is available in basic spec. It means prices start at £53,500, some £4000 less than the auto Supra Pro and not that much more than the 2.0 Pro model, which won’t be getting the manual option it probably deserves. This looks good value to me, which is perhaps why Toyota is expecting as many as four in 10 3.0 Supras sold to be manual from now on. It’ll be interesting to see whether this faith is rightly rewarded.

Toyota GR Supra Gets Manual-Only Limited Edition in Japan

Japan's strict manual-only Supra fans will get a limited edition similar to the U.S. market GR Supra A91-MT.

The Toyota Supra is getting a new limited edition in Japan with an exclusive color combination and manual transmission. This latest special edition, called the Toyota GR Supra Matte White Edition, will have a six-speed manual onlyand will be limited to 50 units in Japan. This newest Supra is so exclusive that Toyota is holding a raffle for the cars, and entries are open from July 20-21.

The GR Supra Matte White Edition will come with a “Matte Avalanche White Metallic” paint finish and tan interior. It’s based on the RZ trim, the highest available in markets abroad. In the U.S., the RZ is known as the 3.0 Premium.

Track Drive: Toyota GR Supra manual is like a perfectly remastered album

The revisions to the suspension do mean that the Supra deals even more competently with bends and cambers than before, with Monteblanco’s tricky back section and steep ascents doing little to unsettle the Supra. It can be driven in a more elaborate fashion – this is a rear-wheel-drive car with well over 300bhp, after all – but driven tidily the Supra makes short work of this circuit.

Toyota is already predicting that the 3.0-litre manual Supra will become the most popular car in the range. Though it’s not a night-and-day revision, this is more like a remastered album; it’s got everything that you loved from before, but it’s now even more engrossing than ever.
