Toyota GR Supra Sport Top Concept

In 2020, Toyota remained committed to the automotive aftermarket and the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA), hosting its 2020 SEMA360 Showcase virtual presentation and unveiling its latest creations, including the GR Supra Sport Top. For 2021, Toyota is excited to "show the metal" and give the GR Supra Sport Top the live in-person SEMA Show debut it deserves.

Intended as a continuation of Toyota's tribute to the much heralded and loved MKIV Supra of the 1990s, it celebrates the removable-roof Supra models of the past and is a fitting companion to the wildly popular GR Supra Heritage Edition that debuted at SEMA in 2019.

Both the GR Supra Sport Top and the GR Supra Heritage Edition will be on display in Toyota's 2021 SEMA Show exhibit (Central Hall, Booth No. 24800). For the first time, SEMA attendees will be able to feast their eyes on both builds side by side and experience the ultimate Supra tribute.

Turns out, you can’t just easily chop the new Toyota Supra’s roof off to create a MkIV-inspired targa. Who knew.

Debuting the Supra Sport Top at this year’s SEMA show – following an online reveal back in January – Toyota has detailed some of the work that went into creating a car that references one of the Nineties’ most iconic Japanese sports cars.

“The steel was a little harder to cut through than we expected,” explains KC Mathieu, owner of the shop in Texas that performed the surgery. “We started with an air saw and got nowhere real fast.”

Apparently, after 30 minutes the team had only cut through one inch of steel. So they went back to the drawing board, fished out a New Better Tool, and et voila, ‘the roof really started to yield’.

Once the roof was cut, Toyota 3D-printed a pair of composite panels, contoured to the Supra’s lines, while retaining the outer roof body structure shapes (these in turn were reinforced).

Elsewhere, the hand-built rear diffuser and underbody airflow were tweaked over the Heritage Edition car (that’s the red one, first revealed back in 2019), there’s a new exhaust, and the MkIV’s ‘basket handle’ rear wing.

Toyota GR Supra Sport Top Concept Revealed

The Toyota GR Supra Sport Top Concept is a fascinating preview of what a Supra convertible would be like.

The Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association (SEMA) is an annual event where aftermarket companies and OEMs come to display their tuned wares. Last year’s show was cancelled due to the pandemic, but it didn’t stop Toyota from hosting an online version.

For the 2021 event, the Japanese brand was keen to show off its creations. This is the Toyota GR Supra Sport Top Concept and it’s said to be a tribute to the adored Mk4 Supra of the early 1990s, which was available with a removable roof for some markets.

“We are very excited to finally get a chance to show off both of these incredibly cool GR Supra builds at the SEMA Show,” said Lisa Materazzo, group vice president – Toyota Division Marketing. “The team did some spectacular customization and fabrication work to pay tribute to Supras that came before, and we’re finally going to show them together so SEMA fans can see them up close and personal.”

This Toyota GR Supra Sport Top Concept is a proper conversion, built by Marty Schwerter and the Toyota Motorsports team.

“Toyota really wanted to have a companion to the Heritage Edition. But, this was no easy build, and we put a lot of thought into cutting the roof and removing a significant part of the car’s structure,” Schwerter said. “It was way more complicated than we originally thought. Removing the top was extremely tough and required some innovative work to retain the GR Supra’s rigidity. I love how it came out, and I hope others love it, too.”

Behold: a 750bhp, naturally-aspirated V10 Toyota Supra

Professional skid merchant Ryan Tuerck finishes his Formula Supra project and... woah

Professional tyre antagonist/Formula Drift champion Ryan Tuerck has unveiled his latest homework: a Toyota Supra equipped with a motorsport V10 engine.

It’s called the ‘Formula Supra’ and satisfies Tuerck’s enthusiasm for gutting rear-drive Toyota sportscars and slotting in ludicrous engines up front. His last indulgence was the V8 from the sublime Ferrari 458 in the nose of a GT86.

He’s upped the stakes for this year-long build, fitting the new A90-generation Supra – that’s the fifth one – with a 4.0-litre Judd GV4 V10. It’s a naturally-aspirated unit that has powered multiple race victories across the globe.

As it is here in unrestricted form, the V10 kicks out 750bhp... which seems sufficient. Tuerck’s been documenting the build process through a series of videos, and in one he explains how the engine’s almost comically short stroke means the 4.0-litre makes its power high up the rev range – somewhere north of 7,000rpm. The rev limit? 11,000rpm. If you haven’t yet heard a Judd V10 at or near 11,000rpm, get thine poor ears over a to a popular video sharing website pronto.

It’s relatively light, too, coming in at around 145kg, and compact at just 24in in height. It’s matched to a sequential six-speed gearbox sending all the Judd’s horses rearwards for full on smoke machine.

Manual Toyota GR Supra Coming 2022 Says Report

When the new Toyota GR Supra was released, there was an outcry that it did not include a three-pedal variant but it seems those wanting to do the world themselves will be rewarded for being patient as a manual offering is slated for launch in the middle of next year.

According to the Japanese publication Car Sensor, the option of a six-speed manual transmission will be introduced more than three years after the Supra was revealed.

The best part is it will be mated to the top of the range 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six and not the silly little 2.0-litre turbo four-pot variant.

“This is not yet finally decided [the introduction of a manual transmission], and depending on feedback from the market, we will decide if we should introduce a manual transmission,” GR Supra assistant chief engineer, Masayuki Kai, told Drive at the time.

Even My Nose Knows The New Supra Isn't A Real Toyota

Am I being unnecessarily nitpicky here? Absolutely. But you can't stop me. This is my blog.

I’m pretty sure the car community got bored with the whole debate over the new Toyota Supra not being a real Supra or a real Toyota a while ago. But since I was busy doing other things at the time such as attending meetings and filling out spreadsheets, I wasn’t really able to participate. That changed last night when I picked up the keys to a bright yellow Supra press car.

And after driving the Supra a whole 30 miles, let me tell you. Boy, do I sure have some opinions. You better buckle up, because some sizzling hot takes are incoming! Just kidding. I’m about to complain about how the Supra smells.

As far as driving impressions go, my main takeaway so far is that I don’t actually have any strong opinions yet. You either love or hate the styling. The yellow is very bright. I accidentally drove way over the speed limit on the way home from the airport.

That’s some real groundbreaking stuff, I know. But earlier today, one thing did hit me: The Supra doesn’t smell like a Toyota.

Spirited performance for enthusiast drivers

Toyota Gazoo Racing has boosted the output of the Supra's turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six petrol powerplant from 250kW to 285kW, a 14 per cent increase compared to the original launch models. Peak torque output has also been bumped up from 495Nm between 1600 revs/min and 4500 revs/min to 499Nm between 1800 revs/min and 5000 revs/min.

The Supra 3.0-litre model's chassis has also been tweaked heading into the new year. Lightweight aluminium braces have been added to increase lateral rigidity, along with front and rear bump stops and new damper settings. Revised programming for the electric power steering (EPS), Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and an Active Differential round of its performance packaging.

Zacoe Performance Go Wide With Toyota Supra Bodykit

The current-gen Toyota Supra is no stranger to aftermarket companies tinkering and ‘torturing’ the sports car to pump out serious horsepower and in some cases, a whole new look.

Zacoe Performance has entered the Supra arena with a rather menacing looking widebody kit.

A tuner has given the Toyota Supra a widebody kit

GT3 car, much? Yep, it’s another modified Supra. Wrap your eyes around this

It’s no secret that Toyota wanted the new A90 Supra to be a darling of the tuning community. Heck, it even shipped cars to major modifiers before it went on sale to the general public. And lo, here we are two years later with yet another new bodykit to pore over. Akio’s plan clearly worked.

The widebody kit you see above is the work of Zacoe – yep, the same firm that showed off that BMW M8 Gran Coupe a couple of weeks ago. It’s planning to go all out with the Supra, with a suspension drop, massive front and rear arch extensions, a racy front splitter, a carbon fibre bonnet and that giant rear wing.

Unique vehicles native to the Japanese Domestic Market are sought after by tuners and adored by petrolheads alike. One of the more recent additions to the list is that of the A90 Toyota Supra Mk5.

While many discredit Toyota’s striking coupé as being a BMW Z4 in drag, tuners have continued in their quest in making some of the most extravagant and outlandish kits for the Supra Mk5. Zacoe is one of the latest with their rendition that bears striking similarity to a shark.

Zacoe may not have years of experience behind their name like other revered tuners in the game but they still have a strong portfolio, producing interesting body kits for a spectrum of high-end vehicles such as the BMW M3 and M4, the McLaren 720s and Lamborghini Huracan. Zacoe seems to have taken a literal interpretation to the shark motif after their announcement of the body kit included the phrase Land shark alert! Its ominous green and grey colour scheme is also a bit of a dead giveaway while the diagonal vents on the bonnet allude to the gills prevalent on each side of the deep sea predator.

Toyota’s self-drifting Supra has drifted itself around some obstacles

Formula Drift-spec Supra is a safety research car, not a future theme-park attraction

It is tempting, if the only tool you have is a slammed, roll-caged and tuned Toyota Supra, to treat every self-driving issue as though it were a drift course.

And with that analogy holding about as well as this modified Supra does its tyre rubber, we present Toyota’s latest research into self-driving: a Supra that’ll slide all by itself.

It’s but the work of quite a few moments, because we first saw this AutonoDrifter last year. Built by the Toyota Research Institute (TRI) in conjunction with Stanford University, and with a little help from GReddy and professional drifter Ken Gushi, the goal was to improve road-car safety.

TRI’s theory is that if a self-driving car has the skills of, well, a Gushi, then it can “amplify and augment a regular driver’s ability to respond to dangerous and extreme situations, helping keep people safe on the road”. Makes perfect sense, no?

“When faced with wet or slippery roads, professional drivers may choose to ‘drift’ the car through a turn, but most of us are not professional drivers,” said TRI’s Jonathan Goh. “That’s why TRI is programming vehicles that can identify obstacles and autonomously drift around obstacles on a closed track.” (Sshh, nobody tell The Stig.)

Autonomous cars are on the horizon, we are not sure how long before the tech is commonplace, but it is definitely on its way. Japanese automaker Toyota has an in-house research division, the Toyota Research Institute (TRI), that has just completed an autonomous drifting Toyota Supra.

TRI researchers have programmed the fifth-generation sports coupe to autonomously drift around obstacles on a closed track. The autonomous drifting Toyota Supra wasn’t preprogrammed to drift at set points. Instead it is using TRI’s Non-linear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) to react to obstacles within its path. TRI’s idea is to utilise controlled, autonomous drifting to avoid accidents by navigating sudden obstacles or hazardous road conditions such as black ice.

“At TRI, our goal is to use advanced technologies that augment and amplify humans, not replace them,” said Avinash Balachandran, senior manager of TRI’s human-centric driving research. “Through this project, we are expanding the region in which a car is controllable, with the goal of giving regular drivers the instinctual reflexes of a professional race-car driver to be able to handle the most challenging emergencies and keep people safer on the road.”

One year ago, TRI and the Dynamic Design Lab at Stanford University enlisted the support of performance specialists GReddy and drift legend Ken Gushi. As a result, the Supra’s suspension, engine, transmission, chassis and safety systems, for example the roll cage and fire suppression, are similar to that used in Formula Drift. The car was also kitted with a computer controlled steering, handbrake and auto shift mechanism for the manual transmission.

One of the all time great tuner nameplates is allegedly set to receive a manual transmission paired exclusively to its in-line 6 motor. Prospective buyers could now own a factory built M/T A90 Supra that will allow purists to put their money where their mouth is.

Many conversions have already been performed on the latest Toyota sports car, one of the more popular ones is turfing the BMW sourced in-line 6 for the formidable 2JZGTE engine which became an instant cult classic from the MkIV model.

However, the Japanese brand is rumoured to be working on a transmission that you wouldn’t want to swap. An M/T A90 Supra might be on the cards for the 2023 model year which will equip a clutch pedal in place of the exclusive standard eight-speed automatic with paddle shifters that has been employed in its application up until now.

It won’t be long until Toyota will confirm if the purist dream of an M/T A90 Supra is not just hearsay when the official press release arrives on the 28th of April. Ever since its release in 2019, there have been murmurs of a Supra that would allow drivers to be more engaged in the driving experience with a manual gearbox.
