CX Racing teases 2JZ-GTE swap for new Toyota Supra
“It needs a 2JZ” was the collective comment echoed by many social media accounts upon the news that the new Toyota Supra would be powered by BMW. Seeking to satisfy this want, California-based tuning company CX Racing has teased a proposed engine swap.
Although both the 2JZ and the new 250 kW BMW B58 are both twin-turbo 3,0-litre straight-six engines, many JDM fans swear by the significantly older Toyota engine both in terms of its ability to manage massive (upgraded) power outputs, as well as its long-term reliability.
CX Racing hasn’t given any details as to what this “exchange” kit with feature but it looks as if it will be a plug-and-play system.

Toyota Supra GT4 Concept
Toyota presents the world debut of the new GR Supra GT4 Concept at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show on 5 March. It is a design and engineering study that explores how the newly launched fifth generation of the legendary Supra sports car might be developed as a competitive machine for international GT4 racing, accessible and affordable for privateer racers and small teams in line with Toyota's worldwide support for grass-roots motorsport.
The road-going Toyota GR Supra has essential qualities that make it an attractive proposition for GT4 racing, with its perfectly balanced chassis, two-seater cabin, highly rigid and light weight body, rear-wheel drive and very low centre of gravity. The combination of the short wheelbase and wide track gives it an ideal 1.55 "golden ratio" for excellent stability and agility, which are valuable assets in a series where the regulations use a balance of performance calculation (adjusting weight according to engine power) to ensure even competition across the field.
The concept model, developed by TOYOTA GAZOO Racing, is instantly recognisable as a Supra and maintains the road car's low, muscular shape, but with increased length and lowered height. A specially-designed front diffuser and rear wing have been added to the GR Supra GT4 Concept to improve airflow around the chassis, reducing drag and optimising downforce. Both items are constructed using composites made from natural fibres such as hemp and flax, replacing the traditional carbon fibre in order to reduce the impact on the environment. Original alloy wheels have been replaced by five-hole OZ 11 x 18in racing wheels.
The MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension design is carried over, but with the addition of competition springs, shock absorbers and anti-roll bars. The high-power deceleration required for racing is provided by high-performance Brembo brakes.
Under the bonnet, the GR Supra GT4 Concept retains the 3.0-litre straight-six-cylinder petrol engine with single twin scroll turbocharger, coupled to an automatic transmission. Performance is increased with help from a motorsport-grade ECU and bespoke wiring looms. There are also motorsport-specification drive shafts and limited slip differential.
The stripped-out cabin is fitted with a high-strength roll cage and FIA-standard fire extinguisher and OMP racing seat. The concept car is also equipped with a motorsport-specific fuel tank and a fast refuelling system.

Historically, the Supra nameplate has a strong reputation for the track work, notably with the A80 securing trophies in the Japanese Grand Touring Championship. Toyota seems keen on rekindling this success with its new Supra-based racer, the GT4-spec concept.
Not quite as ambitious as the racing concept revealed almost a year ago, the GT4 Concept nevertheless gains a suitably large wing and bespoke front splitter.
Aimed at customer racers competing in the popular GT4 racing series, the new Supra already has the makings of a promising racer given its lightweight body, low centre of gravity and impressively rigid body. This concept takes things further by adding race specific parts such as a roll-cage, refined suspension and brakes, as well as additional downforce. Updates to the B58 twin-scroll turbocharged 3,0-litre straight-six have yet to be mentioned.

New Toyota Supra: 2019 UK allocation sells out ahead of Geneva
Toyota pits ‘pure sports car’ against Porsche 718 Cayman after 17-year absence, priced from £52,695
The new Toyota GR Supra – a model that returns after a 17-year break – is a sports car “in the purest form”, according to the Japanese manufacturer, with a singular focus on driver pleasure.
The new machine will make its European debut at the Geneva motor show, and Toyota has confirmed that reservations have been received for every car destined for the UK and Europe in 2019. Given the demand for those 900 cars, Toyota says it will shortly open reservations for the 2020 allocation.
Toyota says it is in the process of converting registrations into customer orders, and people are still welcome to register their interest and be added to the waiting list, which "runs into thousands across Europe".
The fifth-generation Supra retains the front-engined, rear-wheel-drive, two-seat layout of previous versions. The Porsche 718 Cayman rival has been honed by Toyota’s Gazoo Racing performance division and was developed alongside the BMW Z4, with which it shares its turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, producing 335bhp and 362lb ft, and an eight-speed automatic gearbox.
The entry-level Supra is priced at £52,695, rising to £56,945 for the fully loaded, limited-run A90 edition. Deliveries will begin in the summer.

Here's Where You're Expected to Put the Front Plate on a 2020 Toyota Supra
Last month, we were suddenly frozen in fear of the prospect of a front-mounted U.S. license plate on the 2020 Toyota Supra, as the open-orifices of the car’s design didn’t leave a lot of room for mounting a thin, ugly rectangle of government-issued metal. Sadly, it’s almost exactly as bad as we feared.
According to screenshots of the Gran Turismo Sport video game sent in to Jalopnik by a reader (thanks, Joe from Chicago), the new Supra bumper gets a fill-in mount right in the middle-hole of its grille, sort of hanging off of the forward tip of the hood, just under the emblem:

I actually think it looked better when we mocked it up a little lower last month:
That’s... something.
Keep in mind this is just a video game, but it seems pretty obvious that this is the likely setup shipping off of dealer lots in the near future. I’m going to admit that this isn’t very shocking. Does it look bad? Yeah, it does. For a few reasons.
First, we need to blame America for its dumb and ugly squarish-rectangular license plate shape that doesn’t really fit the design language of any car produced after 1990. Then we need to blame the 31 states in America that require a front-mounted license plate.
Then we blame society as a whole for enacting laws and law enforcement, and organizing people into coded identities that are meant to be tracked, which quite clearly constrains our world’s most creative minds and spoils everything that is natural and good.
Then we blame Toyota. I’m not going to say they should have changed the design language of the car to account for the government’s dumb and ugly metal. But we have to blame them because there’s really nowhere else to put the license plate on the front of the car.
One of the other orifices of the face design houses safety and parking sensors you can’t block with a plate, though it’s unclear if anything is on the other side, and there’s hardly any room left between the holes and the headlights to get fancy with some sort of sticker plate that isn’t even allowed.
All in all this is just one of those unfortunate situations no one can really do anything about. If you’re worried about it, just keep the plate under the windshield on your dashboard. If you’re real, you’ll move to a state that doesn’t require a front plate.

Somebody Just Paid $173,600 for This Stock 1994 Toyota Supra
I don’t have the energy to be incredulous anymore, fam. But if I did, I’d be wide-eye head-shaking all over the place after hearing that a 1994 Toyota Supra sold for an ungodly sum of $173,600 at this weekend’s Amelia Island car auction.
At first I wasn’t sure if that outrageous sale price was real; I saw it reported on one Instagram page and nowhere else. But Sotheby’s director of public relations has confirmed to me that, indeed, this 1994 Toyota Supra turbo targa manual with black paint and a tan interior, and 11,200 miles on its odometer, sold Friday for $173,600 including a buyer’s premium.
Wow.
Seems like just a couple months ago we were freaking out over one selling for a record-setting $121,000. Oh wait, that did also happen. And that record’s now been smashed.
RM Sotheby’s expected to sell the Supra for between $100,000 and $120,000, probably largely based on that red one I just mentioned, and so I’m sure the seller is very happy today.
The lot listing didn’t go into immense detail about this weekend’s sale car in particular, but here’s what Sotheby’s did share:
I still really love MKIV Toyota Supras, maybe even more than the average car enthusiast, but I think this is absolutely bonkers. That’s. So. Much. Money.
I guess my assessment that this green MKIV was the “perfect Supra” to set values with its $58,000 price tag was way off. Or, actually, maybe everybody else is just nuts.
The green (or red) does look better, though. The fact that I’m not a huge fan of black paint on cars is probably one of my least popular automotive opinions, but it is what it is.
Regardless of how you feel about the price, or colour, there is no doubt that this $173,600 Supra is as minty as my toothpaste.

The First 2020 Toyota Supra With a 2JZ Swap Is Here
Toyota claims it partnered with BMW on the 2020 Toyota Supra, in part, because it wanted to keep an inline six-cylinder powertrain which the Germans could supply. Of course, to purists, that was never going to be enough, and now it looks like somebody has already started work on the first new Toyota Supra with a 2JZ engine swap.
That person is Daigo Saito, a champion in both D1GP in Japan and Formula Drift here in America. Today he posted photos of his new Supra build, hood up with a shiny turbo 2JZ, the iconic engine from the previous generation, heart transplant to many a drag car and drift car ever since.
Daigo is working on the car with Japanese mega-tuner HKS, which claims it’s expecting 800 horsepower in a press release. They’re hoping to be completed in time to compete in the D1GP All Star Shoot-Out exhibition event in Tokyo scheduled for March 23.
Daigo’s previous lineup of cars includes his big-power 2JZ Lexus SC that conquered American drifting, a 1,000-hp Nissan GT-R that didn’t, a Lamborghini Murciélago V12 and all, the Ferrari 599 that went on to compete in FD (with a great deal of changes), and probably the most extreme Corvette in drifting right now.

There will always be those who say they still don’t like the looks of the new Supra. For me, it all changed when I saw it in person, and now I like it even more in this drift body. It makes a lot of the dramatic curves look like they were always meant for ridiculously large fenders.

The First Toyota Supra Rolls Off The Line
The first production Toyota Supra has been assembled and rolled off the line at the Magna Steyr facility in Austria.
The first production version of the all-new Toyota GR Supra rolled off the production line at the Magna Steyr, Graz Plant in Austria in early March. The one you see here has already been snapped up, fetching a crazy $2.1 million at the 48th Annual Barrett-Jackson Auction at West World Scottsdale in Arizona. The money will be going to the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) charities.
This car is an interesting spec. Featuring Phantom Matte Grey paint, a VIN of 20201, red mirror caps, matte black wheels, red interior with carbon fibre detailing and an engine cover signed by Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda, this Supra is going to be quite the collector's item.
