The Truth behind MWEB's uncapped

Damn those pesky people who are trying to use the internet for work purposes.

Dude go be a chop else where. You and everyone else know that mweb have pre-allocated capacity on their uplinks to seacom. If you buy 100gb accounts and download during the day those are not shaped. And like ive said before im ok with shaping but a 4mbit line to 8kB/s you do not think thats a bit excessive?

These threads that claim Mweb and Co have limited amounts of GBs per month and ration them out are beyond ridiculous...but I suppose that's what growing up in a capped culture does to your mindset. Mweb purchase throughput and NOT cap. Thus they will never provision the amount of data transferred per month but rather the speed at which it is transmitted at any given time at a total on your network. (Which is why priority based shaping sounds like a really good idea on paper)

Most Isps in the world work like this and all of the bigger players in SA as well.

This.

Excessive on the news port sure, have you tried downloading something off the web? Goto Adobe.com and see how fast you can pull Adobe Acrobat reader off the site. Some users here seem to be COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS to all the posts by MWEB, the terms & conditions ON the Mweb website to the fact that you're downloading will be affected during business hours. You're getting a service for most part of the time which is extremely competitive, if you don't like the T&Cs, by all means move to a more expensive option.

This sort of attitude is fine and dandy but I have read many a negative word said about other uncapped offerings that apply shaping to their accounts... so why should there be silence about MWeb? I fully understand shaping during business hours but please feel free to explain to me how many businesses are open at 11pm at night. Why is there still shaping at this time?

Or is the truth that these selfish idiots who are finding "work arounds" for http downloads are affecting the rest of us? After all MWeb assures us that, depending on demand, they will prioritise email and http. Now if self-centred individuals are downloading non-stop via http then MWeb will assume there is demand for browsing at 1am and will shape! Perhaps this explains why some people are so gleefully happy while others moan.

Also, 23:00 is a good time to go to bed. All that's left during the early morning hours are (generally) the insomniacs and automated downloads. Before 23:00 there's still all the kids using wikipedia to complete assignments and parents watching YouTube. Normally these people would have not done it to the same extent, given that they only had 3GB available during the month. If you give home users unlimited access to the internet, they are going to use more of it. I suspect that on MWEB, at least, there's now just as much normal (non-download) traffic generated by home users as by businesses. And some of the businesses wouldn't mind if you use their uncapped link to download after hours when no-one is there.

To the people moaning about shaping after business hours or such, remember that now after business hours the downloaders are still downloading (and there are a lot now) and they keeps the network heavily uitlised and thus shaping goes on for longer.

I have been complaining about the slow speeds for a very long time now. To date MWEB did not reply to a ticket I opened prob about a month ago now! I always said, I understand the need for shaping but I do have issues with them making it slower than dailup for starters.

Last night I bought an aircraft from a developer for FS2004 which needed online activation. It failed each time. I loaded an axxess prepaid account and the authentication went through!! THIS is completely unacceptable to me!!!

South Africa is clearly not ready for uncapped ADSL! There was a FUP in the beginning but it was soon scrapped since it became obvious that MWEB would not be able to sustain that kind of demand. There is now a AUP which says nothing about data limits. Everywhere else in the world they use FUP but I have yet to hear of an ISP enforcing this. I would be happy if MWEB would state a FUP with an acceptable limit of the 200GB to 300GB range and relax the shaping rules to give a better user experience. If they decide to throttle you to 64k after the FUP was breached so be it!! THAT would be good value for money!!

At the moment if I download a somewhat large'ish file I need to wait upto 100x longer for it due to shaping than I normally would using my 4mb line to it's full potential. Limiting people who play games to almost unusable levels and then try to flock a MUCH more expensive package if they dare complain is just criminal IMO.

This is BS!

I CHALLENGE SOMEONE TO FIND A WAY TO USE HTTP AS A WAY OF DOWNLOADING!

Um... Bet you have not heard of Downstorm.co.za or areovps?????? They HAVE made HTTP work-arounds!

And OFC MWEB will slow down during those times!! Thats when the shaping is cut down and everyone rapes the hell out of their connections, filling up the pipe and causing congestion...

Further MWEB HAS! THEY HAVE TO! shape us and put us in high connection ratios, otherwise its not economically viable for them to provide uncapped.

MWEB CAN'T but an infinite amount of BW, they HAVE to have a high connection ratio... You have not done your homework AT ALL!

They told us from the beginning that its not a full time DL account.

And it IS uncapped... saying we have a 300GB cap is so OMFG stupid.

512/8 = 64
64*60*60 = 230400
230400*24*30 = 165888000
165888000/1024 = 162000
162000/1024 = 158.203 GB

Thats 158.203 GB MAX per month on a 512kb/s line, does that mean its capped!? NO!! The line will never stop no matter how much I use so ITS NOT CAPPED!!!! Nowhere in the WORLD can you find an internet connection that works at 100% speed all the time, so you will NEVER reach your theoretical maximum... MWEB NEVER hard caps you or throttles you, they only shape certain protocols for OBVIOUS reasons during specific times of the day... Which ISPs do ALL AROUND THE WORLD!

If you want an unshaped account go ahead and pay over R2k/m.

And STOP pulling false conclusions outa yer arse!

To quote myself.

They're doing it wrong. I have Mweb's Uncapped 4mpbps offering. I know that between 7:30 & about 20:00 my downloads drop but after this time its averaging between 2-3mbps.

You're wasting your time with replies like this. Some people will only be content when their *SHAPED* accounts download at full line speed 24/7/365. They interpret anything less as being cheated. They also don't understand that the Internet is dynamic and it is almost impossible to assure 100% line-speed all day, every day. They all seem unsatisfied with ONLY downloading 300GB on their uncapped lines. People love to complain. Then they love to complain more when others point out that they're complaining without reason. I've realized that people will believe what they want -- against the evidence -- to make them happy. They'll flame and sprout vitriolic rubbish at those who support an alternative point of view. It's actually not worth contributing much to threads of this nature. Let's see how long until someone tells me to take my own advice and stop contributing, or to stop reading the thread. 5 posts? 1 post? Whatever.

Yea, I know you are right, but how else will they learn ? Q_Q

They Don't seem to understand that MWEB has to pay crap loads for extra BW, its not just increasing international BW. If they need to buy more International they have to buy local as well, else it will just bottleneck... and the prices of BW in this country are insane.

They also seem to think that they have their own pipe which is so stupid even a fool could make sense of it, sadly they don't seem to be on the level of a fool.

They confuse slow DLs at night with shaping... Its not really shaping its the connection ratios which they don't understand.

But yea, they will complain and complain and complain, even if we had free uncapped they'd find problems with it...

I am on 384 MWEB uncapped.
I download 1 - 1.5GB per day.
Downloads at night does not run full speed, I jumps randomly sometimes but browsing and things like Skype are fine.
Yes downloads are slow during the day, but browsing are fine and so are Skype, Youtube and the rest.

30GB odd a month for R219 - bargain in my eyes.

So in the end if you looking for "uncapped" and will be happy with download 30GB per month, go for MWEB.

But how fast are the downloads on ave during the day & then at night?

I was doing a 10GB program update download last week and ended up getting my full line speed almost constantly (except for the time they went down obviously)
It is a shaped service and in some ways heavily shaped because every single person is wacking the living **** out of their line atm.

As for the last couple of days as far as I have read Seacom is busy with their latest upgrades
last night the latency appeared to be fine on my side

Sometimes I don't see the point in explaining to people why their shaped account is slow, shame poor people who expected to download at 400kb/s 24/7 for R529.
When I went to a boufet I so disappointed that the told me to slow down or leave when I started hogging all the food to myself, but I paid R50!!! Why can't I eat 50Kg worth of food? You said eat all I like.

Mindset problem .... People if you want to download 24/7, pay for unshaped, don't pay for shaped and then complain that shaped protocols are shaped.

But surely if this was the case Mweb would purchase more "bandwidth" & then their user base will be less effected as this is what they "do" when there is excessive load on their networks or so I read. I guess this is another motive for connecting all the ISPs locally for the whole "DSTV" thing.

I dunno, if it boils down to it at this particular point if I must really be unhappy about anything, I guess it would be my line speed which then turns into line speed price.

Basically there is always room for improvement, it's whether any action is taken on the part of the company in this case ISP to improve their service & retain their customer base.

Their usage policy says you can't use the account for downloading 24/7 - but I don't really have a choice, I'm getting a 10th of my line speed, so a one hour download now takes ten hours - I'm not going to sit and watch it.

"pay for shaped" the whole point of this forum is for the industries customer base to have a voice. Positive or Negative. We have moved out of Communist Russia.....
