The truth behind Seacom delay

I think we now see the latest excuse for everything that is going to be delayed in Africa in the next 5 years.

That said, SEACOM at this stage have so many gold stars they can afford to loose a few.

Ah the myBB bitch and whine squad... getting ready for action. :D
...
But I must say I'm having a bit of déjà vu from this article, wasn't there something like this two weeks ago? :erm:

Looking a bit negative there Noruk, ready to join the whining squad? ;)

Heard the story over the weekend that there is a company who offers seagoing excursions with the intention of hunting the pirates. They even supply all the weapons and ammunition required. :)

Update: It might even be be true:

been posted on MyBB several times already. Most likely a hoax. Murder is illegal in 99.99% of countries in the world!

Actually gary it is not murder if the pirates try and attack the ship, it is defense besides somalia has no government so just like the pirates can do what they like so can that ship :).

Does that law also apply if this happened in international waters?

There are even navy vessels which are actively looking for the pirates with a 'no questions asked' attitude:

" In the first episode of Season 2 (July 12), the frigate HDMS Absalon, the biggest ship in the Danish navy sets sail to hunt modern-day pirates who have been terrorizing the waters off Somalia, capturing ships and taking hostages at gunpoint with increasing frequency. It’s a highly active mission, in the hottest pirate zone in the world, and MIGHTY SHIPS is in the thick of it. The Absalon Special Forces team hunts down ruthless and well-armed pirates, using lethal resources. At stake are the lives of the Absalon crew, and the safety of every ship that sails the waterways around the Horn of Africa."

I've mentioned this several times already. It is illegal for civilian ships to carry weapons in International Waters or in their own national zones. Such an armed ship would not even be allowed to leave port! How are they going to get the weapons past customs inspection onto the cruise ship? Come on man, use your brain? Somalia does have a government, just not a very strong one... and they do have some ships. The US just gave them 40 tonnes of weapons last Friday. They would be well within their rights to take on any armed international cruise.

Yes, if the governments of those people found out that one of their citizens had shot someone, even in international waters, they would be fully within their rights to prosecute them. You don't stop being a citizen just because you are in international waters. And laws don't stop being laws in international waters. The self defence rule does not apply and would especially not apply if you were armed to the teeth in contravention of international maritime law and if the stated intention of the cruise was "to hunt and kill pirates"

it is strange that all other countries have gone from the ages of the cowboy's and indians, wild west, castle's and knights, to the industrial age, to advanced chemestry, micro biology and medical procedures, to the space age, and even up to the information age with super fast internet and communications.

......yet africa is still stuck in "yaaar!!! mateys" pirate times.

Look slike they just wrote anything for the sake of punting Seacom ?? I dont get it , the article states nothing we dont know

They are navy ships. They are allowed to carry weapons. Civilian ships, especially cruise ships are not allowed to carry weapons... It kinda creates a problem for them when they try to dock at foreign ports. At the very least they might be allowed to carry small arms with the permission of the captain, but any captain is going to be very nervous knowing that there are weapons on his ship.... especially heavy caliber machine guns, high powered rifles, and rocket launchers, etc.

And as I also stated elsewhere, no insurance company is going to allow any cruise ship under their protection to engage in any such activity.

Hot on the heels of body-guarding, Oh, look, a new industry is born: ship-guarding. (copyright & trademarked.)

the original pirates want seacom, the digital pirates want seacom....

heck - these guys can't even catch a break

they just have pirates jumping on their back 24/7 "Arrrgghh!! Arrrgghh!! Arrrgghh!! "

The company cited the increase in pirate activity during April and May 2009 - both in terms of intensity and geographical coverage – as the reason for this delay.

How long before someone steals the cable?;)
