The Virtual Machine Thread

I run hardy heron on my virtual box with Vista being the main PC.

i want to share my vista files so that i can access them when I'm logged on to Hardy Heron

Has anyone tried it with success?

Hi all
Are there any sites where I can download the latest VMware Server using local-only bandwidth? It's 136MB; not a killer, but worth saving.
(VMware Server 1.0.6 for Winders)

One thing I would like to know...

Let's say I run Server 2003, with a VMWare client on it running Server 2003...

Is it possible to cluster them? Since it is possible that the machines could have individual IPs...

still running virtual pc, ran some hd vids on it and it coped... so much for htcp ! or is it just the encoding bit ? WMware is great as well

Any idea how to install the additions to Microsoft Virtual Machines?

To install Virtual Machine Additions for a Windows operating system
Open Virtual PC Console.

In the list of virtual machines, double-click the virtual machine on which you want to install Virtual Machine Additions.

In the virtual machine window, log on to the guest operating system as Administrator or a member of the Administrators group.

On the Action menu of the virtual machine, click Install or Update Virtual Machine Additions. If you are unable to move the mouse pointer to the Action menu, press the host key to release the mouse pointer from the virtual machine window.

When prompted for confirmation, read the information, and then click Continue.

When the Virtual Machine Additions InstallShield Wizard opens, click Next.

When the wizard finishes the installation, click Finish.

When prompted, click Yes to restart the virtual machine.

Notes

To open Virtual PC Console, on the host operating system, click Start, point to All Programs or Programs, and then click Microsoft Virtual PC.

The default host key is the ALT key to the right of the SPACEBAR, unless Virtual PC is configured differently. For information about how to change the host key, see Change the host key used for Virtual PC.

hi sorry if this has come up before but couldn't find it. I want to my a VPN between my VM and my host pc. I am currently trying to use iPig but it cant find my server (The VM). Can anybody help?

Why do you want a VPN? The vm and the host PC are connected on the same virtual subnet.

If you want help, give details of your virtualisation software and the host and guest OSes. And your network settings.

my guest is running xp pro and host is vista ultimate. I'm using VMware workstation ACE edition. i'm trying to do this so that i can use two internet connections at once (local and international). Host IP is 192.168.0.66 and guest is 192.168.0.9.

Is the guest bridged, host-only, or what? And is that your physical ethernet interface on the host? What's your existing internet connection?

the guest is bridged. yes it is my physical ethernet interface. Internet connections are for local through mweb and international with openweb. sorry if thats not what u want

I meant (also) what does the machine connect to - an ADSL modem? A router of some kind?

And for the VPN, what site are you trying to VPN to?

virtual box was so daunting and so difficult to get a shared folder working,i used virtualpc2007 and no problems.Created alot of usb portables using virtual machines.I will share them with you all sometime.I have a huge collection now.

it connects to a hub then to a switch. i got this working now. i forgot to allow it through the firewall (stupid me). for some reason my pc does not find the internet connection that is shared on the server. the server pc is a new install of xp pro with nothing else on it and i was wondering if there are any settings i should change. i tried this with connecting to a friends pc and it work so i think its some setting on the server pc.

I have got VPN working on virtualbox.

On the guest OS (windows) you'll have to create an "Accept virtual connections" setting with the New Connection Wizard. The guest OS can be either windowsXP or windows2003, windows2003 is preferred as you can log the connection attempts. Also, the guest OS will have to have its own IP (bridged) for VPN to work. By default, virtualbox also acts as a DHCP server, giving out dynamic IP's to the guest OS'es, which will not work with VPN as it will be double-NATed.

On the host OS there's nothing you need to do, except create a bridged connection for the virtualbox adapter.

All of that stuff is done. the vpn connects i can see the guest and host from the guest. what i can't get to work is sharing the internet connection over the vpn

Is there a local DL server for these programs i want to experiment with Linux and a few different windows please.

Running KVM in ubuntu with two windows XP hosts each using 3GB of RAM and strung the VMs together as a parallel machine running some windows based EM software. Knocks the host machine a but but surfing and email is still possible.

Host specs - E8400, 8GB DDR2 RAM.
