The Virtual Machine Thread

Ok since iv installed vista x64, it turns out neither my Canon LIDE20 scanner nor my KonicaMinolta PagePro 1300w have X64 driver support!

So i decided to try the VmWare 6 trail so that i can have a VM based on XP for my scanner and printer.

Now the problem is when i click "finish" after configuring the the "New Virtual Machine Wizzard" nothings happens!

Judging from the HowTo vids on youtube...A Vm was meant to start!

Help ?

Also wanna give Linux a go on this...

Oh and im on Vista Ulti x64 with SP1

Edit :

When i press finish..the next screen should say "Virtual Machine created successfully"..I dont get that screen...It just goes back to the main screen.

I was playing with Virtualbox 2.0.4 this weekend, on Vista x64, running 4 guests. It ran very smoothly, even as I gave it a royal working out. I did have some issues with the one guest and it's network card, but I think that is sorted out now.

Now I know that 4Gb of ram isn't enough, I need to be able to run more machines at once. That and a bigger screen or multi monitors lol.

For anyone who uses Virtualbox, I highly suggest trying out the new version. Well worth it.

Just use the File/Open to open your newly created VM and then press the "play" button. The one that says "Power on this Virtual Machine".

Tried that...Its greyed out. and no tab appears on the right side..only the "Home".

Interesting - either OS/2 or Virtualbox's throwing a hissy fit as I can't get OS/2 to install on Virtualbox...

...but it installs 100% on M$ Virtual PC...

...IBM and M$ is not exactly buddies of what M$ did to OS/2 way back then...

My plan of action is to get a base OS/2 install up and running on M$ Virtual PC, then export a disk image with clonezilla, then import that same disk image with clonezilla on Virtualbox... a lot of hassle and schleppalooza...

EDIT : the IBM OS/2 *.DSK diskette images is 100% compatible with both Virtualbox and Virtual PC - no need for a stiffy drive

@ Libs

I'm sure I saw something on the Virtualbox forums where somebody had been running multiple "other" operating systems, and OS/2 was one of them. They had a whole list of other systems which ran, along with some observations on how they did it. Maybe worth a look see.

Guys.. need some help..

How do i share a folder between the host Vista and the guest Xp on VirtualBox..Iv tried following the help index...Still a bit lost

I've done this before but it was a bit of a pain, and now I don't have Vbox in front of me, but I'll try to bring it up from memory.

Install the guest additions into your XP guest to start off. In the VirtualBox menu at the top of your VM, you click on the Devices menu I think. It's the same one where you mount/unmount cd-roms. Go to shared folders.

Ah now my mind blanked out :o I'll have to look it up when I get home. However, I do know that you have to find the shares in your guest by using Windows Explorer, that was what threw me off the last time.

I will post another post later on with better instructions on how to sort it out :)

***virtual bump***

Trying out vmware server 2.x out now.

The UI is a bit slow as it's done in Java, but this enables you to control the VM's from another machine across the network.

Still playing around with it tho...

Has anyone know anything about getting virtual graphics card drivers for Virtual PC 2007? I have a Windows 7 virtual boot but Virtual PC only comes with an 8MB "graphics card". So W7 is quite sluggish and I can't make full use of W7's features.

My PC specs are: E4700, 3Gb 667mhz, 512mb 8600GS, and I'm using about 20GB for the virtual disk file. My host OS is Vista Home premium. I dedicated 1.5GB ram for the W7.

Is there anyway to "upgrade" the graphics performance on VPC, or is this as good as I'll get right now?

Unless there is a better Virtual program out there that I don't know about?

Serial ports :

Is it possible to "emulate" serial ports?

What I need is two virtual machines to communicate via a serial port to each other without cables.

My initial thought on this one was to stick an 8-port serial card in my PC hosting the guests and allocating them a serial port each. (The one VM needs 3 serial ports).

Is there software out there which can emulate serial ports via named pipes or the such?

Do let know.

Did you install the paravirtualised drivers in the Guest OS?? This will improve the multimedia performance of your desktop - but, it won't help you with 3D or high performance video etc. Also, once you install the paravirtualised drivers, make sure to enable hardware acceleration and write combining on the display adapter.

Upgrading the performance of the graphics can be done, but requires a separate product and changes the architecture somewhat....

Is there a better Virtual program - Yes, try VirtualBox (Free) or VMware Workstation, Server (free).

VMWare workstation can do this, simply add a virtual COM port, and configure it for named pipes. I dont have VM Server installed; but perhaps that can do it too??

I did install the VM addons, on the Guest OS. I can't enable hardware virtualization because my Intel chip doesn't support it.
Do you mean the hardware acceleration on my physical graphics card?

Thanks, I'll be sure to try VirtualBox and VMware Workstation.:)

VMware workstation = pay for it

VMWare server = free

I'll try it with VMWare server and see if it'll support virtual serial ports, and let you know, thanks :)

No, inside the VM, right click desktop, properties, settings, advanced, troubleshoot. Slider to the right, check write combining. That should stop the crappy slow mouse movement!

Ok, but my mouse movement was already smooth and fine after I installed the VM add-ons. I'm talking about the resource demanding effects that Windows 7 offers. It takes a considerably longer time to open up windows and start programs when I'm using the aero theme, than when I've adjusted the settings for best performance and disabled the advanced themes. Then it just looks like Windows 95.

If you've done what I suggested then that is unfortunately the best you going to get. Unfortunately the hardware required to run the advanced features are impossible to emulate with software....

You can enable the Aero interface through RDP, enable TS on the VM, and connect with your Vista machine as a client.

Done that as well... still pretty slow :-(

Thanks for the input though.

I'm sure there must be a way to allow the virtual machine to use your physical graphics card, just like it uses your network card. I've got it connecting to my wireless network and I can connect to the internet seamlesly. So surely it could/should access my graphics card as well.

Oh well, I guess my search continues...
