How Volkswagen’s Amarok changed South Africa's opinion about bakkies
In 2010, when Volkswagen first launched its Amarok bakkie, South Africans were pretty unforgiving towards the bakkie. Both the media and the buying public scoffed at the idea of a Volkswagen double cab bakkie. Not because the automaker decided to build one - remember, they sold the caddy bakkie locally - but because it was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel engine.
"What?!" did we all say upon hearing the news, because how on earth can it compete against the 3.0-litre engines doing duty in the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. Hilarious!
What's next for Amarok?
The Amarok's outlook could look slightly different in the next few years, because VW and Ford have gone into partnership to build their next-generation bakkies on the same architecture. How this will influence both bakkies’ DNA remains to be seen.
But for the Amarok, the future looks bright. The bakkie came with many firsts over the last ten years and it will surely continue with that trend. It's 2.0-litre engine paved the way for Ford to bring its own bi-turbo unit to market, while Isuzu will try and best both bakkies with its own 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine come then end of the year.
The V6 engine in the Amarok will be replaced by a more powerful unit (190kW/600Nm) over the course of 2020. And that engine, thanks to previous experiences in the VW Touareg, is a peach of a unit that will elevate the Amarok’s position.
In all, the Volkswagen Amarok is perhaps the best lifestyle bakkie on sale in South Africa today. And if VW continues to 'spoil' the consumer with special models like the Dark Label and Canyon, the bakkie's future will be secured.

The first problem is that you need buy a hilux lol
You will have to settle for 2.0 tdi with 8 speed auto, try and get highline that's fully loaded. Gearbox bulletproof and engine also pretty good, but your friends wont approve your purchase as it basically has milk bottle as an engine
The v6 would been really nice , but wont find one used for that budget.

New (Ford Ranger-based) Volkswagen Amarok bakkie teased in fresh sketch!
The first teaser sketch of the new, second-generation Volkswagen Amarok has been released, with the bakkie set to be based on the next-gen Ford Ranger.
The German firm showed the sketch its annual media conference, where VW Group chairman Herbert Diess confirmed the “successor to the Amarok” would be the “first fruit” of the firm’s collaboration with Ford.
We should point out the production model is unlikely to be nearly as extreme as the version in the sketch, which features impossibly large wheels (wrapped in chunky rubber), flared wheel arches and hiked suspension. The front end, though, is an interesting take on the Wolfsburg-based firm’s latest family face (and oddly appears to feature a touch of Mitsubishi, too).

The VW Amarok has established itself as a unique double-cab. In the wake of X-Class being discontinued, VW can rightfully claim to market the world's only premium double-cab bakkie.
With its sophisticated Audi-sourced engine, Amarok is also the world's most potent 3-litre V6 turbodiesel bakkie. Amazingly, it has tallied strong sales for a decade without requiring a major revision – a testament to the correctness of Amarok's original design, launched in 2010.
The current Amarok is deep into its product lifecycle, and a replacement is due by 2022. This will give it a remarkable 12-year total lifespan, something almost unheard of in modern automotive product planning and development.

The Canyon costs R799 900, and for that chunk of change, you get a new 'Honey Orange' hue, Canyon decals, and impressive-looking 17-inch Aragua wheels. Those are the items that make the Canyon unique before you drop me an email laden with 'F-bombs'.

New Volkswagen Amarok bakkie rendered based on official sketch
A digital artist has created what could turn out to be fairly accurate renders of the new Volkswagen Amarok, using an official sketch as a base.
Earlier in March 2020, VW released the first teaser sketch of the second-generation Amarok, with the fresh-faced bakkie set to be based on the next-gen Ford Ranger.
The German firm showed the sketch at its recent annual media conference, where VW Group chairman Herbert Diess confirmed the “successor to the Amarok” would be the “first fruit” of the firm’s collaboration with Ford.
Now artist Nikita Chuyko has imagined what the production model could look like, publishing the renders on Russian automotive website Kolesa.ru.
The images show the Amarok’s fresh front end, which is dominated by a large grille and an X-shaped motif not dissimilar to that debuted by Mitsubishi’s Triton. There are also new headlamps, boxy wheel arches and more aggressively stamped flanks.

Before the 3.0-litre double-cab, VW showed its intentions with a very special Amarok V6 bakkie.
It has been ten years of Amarok, and with VW having teased the next-generation of its full-size bakkie earlier this month, we thought it fitting to ponder the best Amarok of all.
Amarok double-cab has been a tremendous success for VW. There is no question that its V6 double-cab sets the standard for leisure bakkies in South Africa, especially those which deputise as highway cruising family vehicles.
But we tend to forget the single-cab cab Amarok, which was discontinued locally in 2017, due to lagging demand. When you start rummaging through the archive of VW single-cab concept vehicles, you'll rediscover an Amarok which very accurately predicted where the double-cab's development would peak today, many years ago.
The bakkie in question is, of course, the 2013 Amarok Power Pickup. Built to demonstrate how radical and adaptable the Amarok platform could be, it debuted at the famous VW festival, hosted on the shores of Lake Wörthersee, in Austria.

Former VW and BMW designer follows the current trend and heads East.
Kia has appointed a new vice president of interior design. Belgian, Jochen Paesen will be yet another European influence at the Korean car company, which has not been shy to buy-in the best available talent when required.
Paesen studied at the University of Coventry, completing a design degree, before attending the Royal College of Art. His portfolio is very strong, having served as an interior designer at both VW and of late, BMW.
If you are a Kia brand fan, Paesen’s appointment should be met with overwhelming approval and excitement. His responsibilities at BMW included interior design project leader for both the G11/12 7-Series (2015 - present) and the highly desirable M4 GTS. Paesen also contributed to the F12/13 6-Series (2011 - 2018) and oversaw the i8’s cabin.
What might excite South African Kia followers most, is what Paesen did at VW before his career transferred to BMW. From its launch back in 2010, the VW Amarok’s interior has remained unrivalled – and it was all the work of Jochen Paesen.

The Volkswagen Amarok has been around for a decade. When it first arrived locally at the turn of the decade, South African consumers were somewhat perplexed at VW’s boldness to power its bakkie with a turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel engine.
Despite the gags and jabs at this decision, Volkswagen persisted and everything eventually paid off. While the bakkie sells around 200 units every month, it’s a solid number that is proving that the automaker got the ingredients right when penning its Amarok.
Earlier this year, Wheels24 ran a story on the Amarok - explaining how the bakkie carved out a niche and a solid contingency of followers. Nowadays, the bakkie is still powered by the 2.0-litre engine, but Volkswagen’s turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine further enhances the range.
The V6 engine offers 165kW/550Nm, but on the overboost 180kW/580Nm is available for ten seconds. In 2020, a 190kW/600Nm version will take over as the top-of-the-range engine in the Amarok range.

Well, that’s an interesting thought. A digital artist has created a render of the next-generation Volkswagen Amarok in body-on-frame SUV guise.
If such a model were to materialise, it would take on the popular Toyota Fortuner, not to mention the (also locally built) Ford Everest and the slower-selling Isuzu MU-X.
Shoeb Kalania created the rendering for IndianAutosBlog.com, drawing inspiration from the single second-generation Amarok teaser sketch VW has thus far revealed.

A more powerful version of the Volkswagen Amarok is headed to South Africa this year!
Good news for fans of the Volkswagen Amarok is that the 190 kW Amarok is expected to arrive in South Africa in October 2020.
Back in 2018, our video man, Ciro De Siena, headed to Oman to drive the much-anticipated, high-powered Volkswagen Amarok which sees outputs from its 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel pushed up to 190 kW and 550 Nm of torque, which is all very exciting.

I cant understand why the Amarok hasnt sold better in SA. It might be the Hilux or nothing mentality, cant imagine what else it could be.
The Amarok has a substantially better interior and ride quality, honestly most people with a double cab arent going offroad often and arent transporting much(loadbody is tiny in a double cab)

Volkswagen says it will create the second-generation Amarok by “adapting” Ford’s upcoming new Ranger bakkie.
The Wolfsburg-based firm confirmed the news in a statement outlining the latest “landmark” in the Volkswagen-Ford global alliance.
In the statement, VW said its supervisory board had “approved further contracts under the co-operation with Ford Motor Company” announced in 2019.
“The next milestones in the vehicle projects are anticipated to be implemented in near the future with the signatures of both companies. Three projects in the areas of electrification and commercial vehicles are planned to be realised as a first step,” the statement said.
Referring to the second-gen Amarok (without actually naming it), the German company said “a midsize pickup developed by Ford” would be “adapted by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in selected markets”.
