The VW Amarok Thread

New 2022 Volkswagen Amarok: Ford Ranger sibling previewed

New mid-sized pick-up will be built alongside the Ranger at Ford's Silverton plant in South Africa

Volkswagen has promised that the new Amarok pick-up due next year will have “clear Volkswagen DNA”, despite being jointly developed with Ford.

The machine is being developed alongside the recently revealed new Ford Ranger pick-up and will be built alongside it at a Ford factory in Silverton, South Africa. The two firms agreed a wide-ranging ‘global alliance’ in 2019 that will include producing commercial vehicles and electric cars. The next-generation Amarok will be the first model launched as a result of the initiative and is described by Volkswagen as “a major strategic step”.

Volkswagen has now revealed two further concept images of the new Amarok, hinting at both the exterior and interior designs. The firm promises that the machine will have a “completely new appearance” and will also offer more extensive equipment options than its predecessor - including new driver assistance features and connectivity options.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles design boss Albert-Johann Kirzinger said a new front end and ‘X-design’ features will “clearly distinguish the new Amarok and emphasise its claim to be leading the way. We’ve given the strength and power of the new Amarok an unambiguous expression – with clear Volkswagen DNA, inside and out.”

The new Amarok will be revealed early next year, before going on sale in select markets. It is due to be launched in Europe in late 2022.

Here’s a glimpse at the new Volkswagen Amarok

Fancy some sketches of the Ford Ranger-based VW pickup? You’re in luck

The next-gen Ford Ranger was unveiled a couple of weeks back, so it’ll soon be time for Volkswagen to follow suit with its all-new Amarok based on the same platform. First though, VW has released some slightly odd rhino-based sketches of both the exterior and interior. Because of course it has.

Apparently the Amarok has been used for wildlife preservation in South Africa since 2011, and VW’s commercial vehicles branch is a partner of the Wilderness Foundation Africa (WFA). Hence the rhinos.

Volkswagen also says that the Amarok will have “clear Volkswagen DNA” despite the Ford connection, and it’s probably the reason for the new Ranger getting a 3.0-litre V6 option. What do we think of the looks, folks? We'll see the final design in 2022.

Not Sure How But This Beautiful Volkswagen Amarok Is For Sale In Michigan

It's a small diesel 4x4 pickup with a manual transmission, right here in the States

America’s laws prevent enthusiasts from getting some exciting cars that have to stay in far-off lands for a couple of decades before we can pick them up. Yet, every once in a while a vehicle defies logic by finding its way in. A 2017 Volkswagen Amarok TDI came all of the way from Mexico to end up for sale in Michigan.

While Volkswagen sells more SUVs around the world than anyone can count or remember, its pickup game is small. If you want your Volkswagen to come with a bed for your mulch then you really have only one choice: the Amarok. However, if you live in the States then Volkswagen’s pickup is out of reach.

This 2017 Amarok is here and ready for you to spend $44,900 on. The selling dealership, Garage Kept Motors, tells me that the truck was imported from Mexico and the seller was able to register it in Michigan with Farm Plates. Thus, it has a clean Michigan title.

Under its hood is a 2.0-liter inline-four diesel with a single turbo. That’s good for 138 HP and 251 lb-ft torque. There’s an APR Stage 1 tune onboard, though it’s not stated what the power output is now.

Ranger-based all-new Amarok teased once again in sketch

While the bakkie fans amongst us wait patiently for the all-new Amarok to be officially unveiled, the final stages of development of the second-generation of the smash-hit commercial/lifestyle vehicle are now well underway. Touted to be ten centimetres longer and more than four centimetres wider than the outgoing model, VW has promised a vehicle that sees vast improvement in all aspects, from off- and on-road capability to interior specification and efficiency.

Almost a year ago, we were treated to a design sketch of the all-new Volkswagen Amarok, and now we’ve been given a new glimpse at the iconic bakkie with another design sketch, teasing a bit of the vehicle’s interior, too.

Head of design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Albert-Johann Kirzinger, explains, “The new Amarok from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles impresses through its tough, honest design.

“You can see that in the interior of the pick-up too. The uncluttered, masculine architecture, the elements designed in a machine-like fashion, the clear, taut surfaces and a particularly high-quality cockpit raise the Volkswagen DNA to a new level and emphasise the Amarok’s right to claim premium vehicle status.”

Volkswagen promises that the vehicle will feature more in the way of driver assist systems and connectivity with features that have “not been seen before in this segment.”

2023 Volkswagen Amarok: More Details

Some more teasers and details of the new Volkswagen Amarok have been announced. Here’s what you can expect from the new bakkie.

The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok will be revealed in 2022 and the best news is it will be built right here in South Africa as well as Argentina. Previously, it was also assembled in Hanover, Germany.

If you were not aware, the all-new Volkswagen Amarok will be sharing a platform with the brand-new Ford Ranger that has just been revealed. We’re impressed by what the new Ranger offers based on what we’ve seen so far, so expectations are quite high for the Volkswagen version.

In January 2022, Volkswagen released this cool-looking teaser sketch. While there’s not much to go on, closer inspection gives us some clues of what to expect. Look at those flared arches, for example. The cabin shows its digital dashboard as well as a new-look infotainment screen.

Accompanying this image came confirmation that a V6 engine will be available, as well as the claim that the new Amarok will be 10 cm longer and 4 cm wider than the current outgoing model.

Volkswagen says its new Amarok will feature a completely new look, both inside and out as well as offer a wider range of standard equipment. The 3rd generation Volkswagen Amarok will also feature more advanced driver assistance systems and boast more connectivity. Volkswagen claims it will feature “innovations that have not been seen before in this segment.”

New Volkswagen Amarok teaser confirms V6 TDI power

Volkswagen has issued yet another teaser of its new Amarok, and now we have confirmation that it will be revealed to the world around midyear. As expected the company has also confirmed that the new Volkswagen Amarok will once again be available with V6 TDI power.

As the new Ama-Trok will be based on the next-gen Ford Ranger, and built right here in South Africa, it’s practically a given that it will use Ford’s engines. This means the currentVW-developed 3.0-litre TDI, which produces 190kW and 580Nm, will be replaced by the new SA-built Ford V6 turbodiesel. Ford hasn’t announced any outputs as yet, but the US market F-150 engine that it’s said to be derived from produces 186kW and 600Nm, so it should be in that ballpark.

The new Volkswagen Amarok will also inevitably be available with a 2-litre diesel and for certain markets a petrol option is also on the cards.

New Volkswagen Amarok global launch to take place in South Africa

It’s already common knowledge that the second-generation Volkswagen Amarok will be based on the new Ford Ranger and built in the latter’s factory right here in South Africa. But now VWSA has confirmed that the new double cab’s global debut will also take place here.

“2022 will be a monumental year for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, which will see the launch of the best-selling new Caddy range as well as the new Amarok. The Amarok’s world premiere and global media launch will both take place in South Africa later this year,” VWSA confirmed in a statement.

The new Volkswagen Amarok is one of many new products that the German carmaker plans to launch in South Africa this year. These include the facelifted Polo (due in February), the updated T-Roc and Tiguan Allspace, all-new Polo sedan as well as the Golf R and Tiguan R performance models.

Volkswagen and Audi dominated the South African passenger car market in 2021 with a combined market share of 22%, but the company trails far behind its nearest competitor Toyota in the commercial vehicle market. For instance, in the final quarter of 2021 the Volkswagen Amarok was the country’s 11th best selling bakkie range, with a monthly average of just 142 units.

VWSA will surely be aiming to improve on these numbers with the new Amarok that’s due at the end of the year.

VW Amarok R on Ranger Raptor platform?

Six-cylinder Amaroks are popular. But how will Ford feel about a Raptor rival?

Since VW introduced the V6 Amarok, it has been clear which engine configuration is preferred.

Double-cab bakkie buyers have been quite willing to pay a premium for the larger capacity V6 engine. And VW will be keen to sustain that customer demand, with the new Amarok scheduled for its global reveal, in South Africa, later this year.

Although VW has done a tidy trade in V6-powered Amaroks, it hasn’t followed the example of Ford and other rivals’ example by producing a comprehensive high-performance double-cab with enhanced off-road capability.

VW has focussed more on the leisure double-cab buyers, who want V6 power for safer overtaking and comfier high-speed cruising. But could that change with the change to a Ford Ranger platform?

With new Amarok and Ranger essentially being the same bakkie, regarding structure and powertrain, will Ford share all those Raptor parts with VW?

It is a question that Australian product planners at VW commercial vehicles have considered. The German company’s Australian arm has collaborated with Tom Walkinshaw Performance, to create a more street-focused Amarok V6. But what could the next step be? Surely, it must be something closer in concept and theme to Raptor, with similarly outrageous off-road ability?

A Raptor-rivalling Volkswagen Amarok R is apparently under consideration

When it comes to high-speed terrain gobbling, the Ford Ranger Raptor remains unrivalled in the bakkie world, but there is no shortage of rumours about potential rivals that could be in the works. Will there be a V6-powered GR Hilux? Will Nismo work similar magic on the Nissan Navara? Only time will tell.

And now there is talk of a potential Raptor rival from Wolfsburg. According CarsGuide, Volkswagen is keen to have its own version of the new-generation Ford Ranger Raptor, with which it will share a platform and a factory right here in South Africa.

However the Australian publication says it is not yet clear whether Ford will donate all the necessary bits and pieces from its own flagship. But hang on, Volkswagen’s Australian division apparently has a back-up plan, which would see it turning to an engineering firm called Walkinshaw, which has already created kitted out versions of the current Amarok, badged W580S and W580X.

"There is opportunity for everything in the pick-up segment. It's definitely an option. It's what we need to investigate now," VWCV director Ryan Davies told CarsGuide when asked about a potential Walkinshaw project.

Power would inevitably come from a V6 turbodiesel engine, which VW has confirmed will be available in the next Amarok. Although it hasn’t confirmed whether the V6 will be its own or supplied by Ford, the latter seems the most likely option.

...so now that the Amarok is planned to be built on the Ranger platform in Silverton, and after Ford's Indian source of Figos and Ecosports has dried up due to Ford's withdrawal from India, what are the chances of Ford slapping a Figo front end on the Polo Vivo and assembling them side-by-side in Uitenhage ?

I suppose the decision would not lie locally, but with big boss Mary Barra.

......similarly, a platform-shared Ecosport could be made from the soon-to-be locally launched VW Taigo:

Is it not the Amarok that is going to be built on a Ranger platform?

New info and renderings released as Volkswagen Amarok gets ‘teased’ yet again

The new Volkswagen Amarok has been teased yet again, ahead of its scheduled debut later in 2022, and along with a few new titbits of information, VW’s commercial vehicle division has also released new teaser sketches that show us the back end of its new double cab contender.

Set to be based on the upcoming Ford Ranger, the new Volkswagen Amarok will be built right here in South Africa, at Ford’s Silverton plant, and the vehicle’s international launch event will also take place in Mzansi.

VWCV has confirmed that the new double cab will be 10cm longer than its predecessor, bringing the overall length to 5350mm, and it will also be wider than before. This, according to the carmaker, manifests in more legroom for those sitting in the second row. As with the current model, a Euro pallet will fit between the wheel housings.

Improved off-road ability is on the cards too, thanks to the new model’s greater ground clearance. But will we see a Raptor equivalent? The Amarok R rumours are certainly flying - more here.

VWCV has previously confirmed that the new model will offer V6 turbodiesel power, and this will almost certainly take the form of Ford’s new locally-built unit. Ford-sourced 2.0-litre diesel engines are also no doubt in the pipeline.
