A Caddy's Tale: 40-year passage from humble bakkie to versatile all-rounder

New Caddy 5

According to Volkswagen, the new Caddy 5, unveiled in February, features a significant upgrade in technology, connectivity, and safety. It is built on an all-new Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) platform in Caddy, Cargo, and Maxi form, with load space that ranges from 3.3m3 to 4.0m3.

The wholly redesigned body now has more dynamic-looking proportions and is more aerodynamic – with the Cd value reduced from 0.33 to 0.30. New features include optional electric sliding doors and tailgate, a panoramic sunroof, up to 18-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights and LED rear lights.

The new Caddy will again be available as the Cargo (panel van with enclosed superstructure), an estate (with passenger compartment windows), and in various passenger car variants (MPVs). The base passenger model will, in the future, be the 'Caddy,' followed by 'Life' specification and premium 'Style' line.

The extended version – the Caddy Maxi – now provides room for up to two Euro pallets, and inside the indicator and control elements have been completely redesigned with a new Digital Cockpit (optionally fully digital instruments) and radio and infotainment systems (between 6.5 and 10 inches in size).

The fusion of Digital Cockpit and top 10-inch navigation system creates a new 'Innovision Cockpit' with online connectivity unit and infotainment systems with integrated eSIM and digital buttons for light, sight, audio, and menu functions.

The Caddy's new four-cylinder TDI engines fulfill the 2021 Euro 6 emissions standards and are all fitted with particulate filters. The engines, with power outputs between 55kW and 90kW, also have a new twin dosing system, significantly reducing nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission levels.

A turbo-petrol engine (TSI) delivering 84kW and a supercharged natural gas engine (TGI) will also be available. European sales are expected to begin later this year, and its South African introduction is slated for 2021.

Local specifications will only be released closer to that time.

Volkswagen expands Poznań plant ahead of new Caddy production

Volkswagen says the expansion of its Poznań plant in Poland is almost complete ahead of the start of production of the new Caddy.

Revealed in February 2020, the fifth-generation Caddy is billed as a “huge leap forward” for the nameplate.

The upgrading of the plant has taken more than two years, says VW, and includes the construction of a logistics hall, the expansion of the body shop and a broader reconfiguration of the factory site.

Dietmar Mnich, chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen Poznań and Poznań plant director, said the firm had “concluded around 90 percent of the capital investment for preparing the plant for production of the latest vehicle models, in particular the new Caddy”.

Volkswagen confirms new Caddy-based ‘Mini-Camper’ in official images!

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has released the first official images of its new Caddy Mini-Camper.

Billed as the successor to the Caddy Beach, the new Mini-Camper will be based on the fifth-generation Caddy. The Wolfsburg-based firm says the newcomer will boast an “entirely new” bed concept that has been redeveloped to offer greater versatility, along with a 1,4 m2 panoramic glass roof.

VW describes the new Mini-Camper as the California’s “small brother”, saying it has been conceived for all who seek “maximum flexibility from their car, so that they can embark on the occasional spontaneous micro-adventure”. Lightweight camping chairs and a table from the California are “cleverly stowed” in the rear.

New Volkswagen Caddy California unveiled as compact camper van

Volkswagen has whipped the covers off its new Caddy California, a compact camper that effectively succeeds the Caddy Beach.

Based on the new, fifth-generation Caddy, the small camper van measures 4 501 mm long. The Wolfsburg-based firm says a longer wheelbase version will follow in 2021, measuring 4 853 mm from nose to tail.

The newcomer’s fold-out bed, meanwhile, features cup springs and a “high-quality” mattress, with VW claiming it provides the “same high level of sleeping comfort” as the items in the T6.1 California and Grand California. Measuring 1 980 mm by 1 070 mm when flat, VW says the bed folds to a third of its length when not in use, tucking away neatly above the boot space.

The Caddy California will also be offered with an optional “mini kitchen”, which is hinged to the left cargo space wall beneath the bed (with the hatch open, it can be pulled out to the rear).

New Volkswagen Caddy: SA launch scheduled for final quarter of 2021

Volkswagen South Africa has confirmed it plans to launch the new, fifth-generation Caddy range in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Revealed back in February 2020, the new Caddy has shifted to the VW Group’s ubiquitous MQB platform. The adoption of the latter architecture means various new technologies have been added to the Caddy’s arsenal, including fresh driver assistance systems and digitalised control systems.

The new model is built at the Poznań plant in Poland.

While the make-up of the local range has yet to be announced, the new Caddy is offered in overseas markets in Cargo (a panel van with an enclosed superstructure), Estate (with passenger compartment windows) and MPV guises. The Caddy California compact camper, meanwhile, was unwrapped in September 2020.

I want to like it as all things new are meant to be better but I can’t seem to get around my impressions. Maybe if I see it in the “flesh”
